Chapter 6

~Kehlani~ I know I’ve checked the menu five times already, but I need to check it again. I want everything to be ready for when Melanie brings her mate home for dinner. He will be joining the pack and everyone is excited to have another ranked member find their fated mate. I make my way back downstairs and run into Jax at the kitchen entryway. “Where are you going, Red?” I take a step back and place my hands on my hips. “I’m going to make sure everything is ready for tonight.” I try to walk around Jax, but he steps in front of me. I move the opposite direction, but am blocked by Jax again. “Um…..let me through.” Jax shakes his head and crosses his arms over his chest. “Alpha Jayden informed me that you have been in the kitchen many times today. The kitchen staff is getting nervous. We agree it would be best if you let them do what they are good at and you return to Alpha duties.” I step back and cross my arms over my chest. “Oh, you and Alpha Jayden ‘agreed’ did you? I haven’t done anything to the kitchen staff for them to be nervous about. I’m simply making sure that everything is going smoothly,” I say in a huff. “Since when do you and ‘Alpha Jayden’ side together anyway? You have known me the longest.” Jax smirks at me and I feel an arm wrap around my waist. The sparks against my temple make my heart skip a beat. “I know you want to make a good impression, but the kitchen staff is well equipped to handle this.” I turn around and rest my head on Jayden’s chest. “I know they do. It’s just…..it’s just that Melanie is already worried about this bond and I just want to make sure things go well.” Jayden places his hands on the sides of my head and pulls it up so we are looking into each other’s eyes. “If a dinner mishap is enough to make him run for the hills, he isn’t good enough for our Melanie.” I smile and Jayden leans down and gently places his lips onto mine. “Oh so sweet…..so sweet I think I may puke.” Jax shakes his head and walks off, leaving Jayden and I to our moment. We hear a loud bang and take off to the front of the house. Brooklyn is stomping through the front room and Melanie is trying to run after her. “Brooky, can you stop and talk to me?!” Brooklyn continues to the stairs and runs up them quickly. Melanie stops at the foot of the stairs and sighs. “Everything okay with you two?” I ask while trying to keep my laugh in. Melanie turns to us and shakes her head. She is about to answer when we hear a throat clear. We turn to the front door to see a man standing there looking sheepish. I take him in quickly and immediately wonder how he got the visible scar on his face. I walk towards the man and something in his eye seems familiar. I reach out my hand. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Alpha Kehlani.” There is a brief flash in his eyes before he accepts my outreached hand. I can’t quite determine what it was, but it was unsettling. “Nice to meet you. I’m Daniel Lansing.” Daniel shakes my hand and quickly releases it. I can feel the warmth from Jayden behind me. “I’m Alpha Jayden. Please come in.” Jayden gently pulls me away from the door and Daniel walks in. Melanie walks to meet him and Daniel places an arm around her waist. “Two Alphas, that’s new. I was intrigued when Melanie mentioned it.” The more I look at Daniel, the more unease I feel. There is something about him that just doesn’t sit well with me. Jayden starts to engage Daniel and Melanie in small talk and I stand off to the side listening. I hear a creak behind me. I quietly turn and see Brooklyn peeking from the stairs. There is something going on, but I don’t think now is the time to address it. Once we start to move, Brooklyn quickly goes back up the stairs. “We should head to dinner. I will get Brooklyn,” Jayden addresses the group. I place a hand on his arm when he turns to the stairs. “Maybe let her be for now. We can deal with her later.” Jayden sighs and leans in closer. “She is being extremely rude and I’ve taught her better than that. She needs to act appropriately.” I get where Jayden is coming from, but I think that Brooklyn has been sensing what I did from Mr. Lansing. They say kids can see through the crap. I turn to Jayden and caress his cheek with my hand. “Let her be for now. I think it will be best.” Jayden sighs and reluctantly agrees. We head into the dining room. Melanie, Daniel, and Jax are already seated and waiting for us. I mind link someone in the kitchen to make a plate and leave it on the counter for me. Our dinner is served and the small talk begins. I excuse myself quickly, telling the group I need to use the restroom. I sail into the kitchen and grab the plate that was made. I head upstairs to find Brooklyn. She is in her room, on the bed, and I can hear her sniffling. I place the plate on her desk and quietly sit on her bed. She lifts her head up to look at me and buries her head in my lap. I gently run my hand down her head again and again until the sniffles subside. “Brooklyn, are you getting a bad feeling from Mr. Lansing?” She lifts her head up and stares at me. Tears start to fall down her cheeks. “I didn’t know how to tell anyone because I don’t know why I feel that way. I didn’t think anyone would believe me.” I pull her to me in a bear hug and rub her back. “I understand.” I kiss the top of her head. “I feel it too.” Brooklyn pulls back and looks at me. “You do?” I nod and wipe tears from her face. “The best thing we can do is be happy for Melanie while keeping an eye on Daniel.” Brooklyn nods in agreement. “I have to get back downstairs. When he leaves, I will talk to your dad and we will figure it all out. I brought you some food. Just stay here and we will talk to you later.” Brooklyn gives me a big hug and kisses my cheek. I get up and head back downstairs to join the group.
