Mates: Revenge

Chapter 4

~Melanie~

The date went well. It didn’t have the fire or sparks that I had always expected, but it was a very nice evening. I’m actually looking forward to seeing Daniel again. Winnie stayed, unusually, quiet during the date and after. Maybe she spent the time communicating with his wolf. I tried to reach out to her, but she did not respond and I decided to not take it personally. When I arrived at the packhouse, I went straight to bed. I’m determined to talk to Brooklyn in the morning to see make sure that we are okay.

I let myself into the Alpha’s quarters so I can make my special french toast for Brooklyn. She loves how I make them because I pile sugar on top and make a special sugar syrup that goes with it. I figure that if nothing else, this would be enough of an apology for whatever I did and we can get back to being on good terms.

I already minlinked the Alphas to let them know I would be in there fixing breakfast for Brooklyn so they wouldn’t freak out. I have done this a few times and they have always been accommodating. I don’t think any of us expected Brooklyn and I to get so close so fast, but it happened. I love that little girl like she was my kid sister. I would do anything for her and not just as the Gamma of the pack. She is so special and I’m so grateful to have her in my life.

I’m finishing up the french toast when I hear movement behind me. I know it’s Brooklyn, but I also know that I can’t just talk to her as if nothing is wrong. I plate the french toast along with some scrambled eggs. I already have the syrup in a container on the island. I pick up both plates and turn to the island. Brooklyn is watching my movements. I say nothing, but place a plate in front of her and one in front of me. I decide to stay on this side of the island so we can be face to face. Brooklyn looks down at her plate and I can see the corner of her lips turn up slightly. I have one foot in already.

Brooklyn picks up her fork to begin eating, but says nothing. I take a bite of the french toast and moan loudly, scrunching my face up. I start to smack on the french toast, making sure my mouth is open. I see Brooklyn trying to suppress a laugh. I’m getting there. I continue to take exaggerated bites and moan, loudly, in pleasure. Brooklyn finally starts to laugh out loud. I giggle a bit and put my fork down. “Are you mad at me, Brooky?” Brooklyn sighs and puts her fork down.

“I know that you found your mate and that’s a good thing, but I will miss you,” she says quietly. I nod understanding what she means. “Also, I……” Brooklyn puts her head down.

“What is it, Brooky? You can tell me anything.” Brooklyn slowly brings her eyes up to meet mine.

“I’m not so sure about Mr. Lansing.” I can see Winnie perk up at this, but she says nothing.

“What do you mean?” Brooklyn looks at me, then shakes her head.

“Nothing. It’s nothing.” Brooklyn starts eating again and I’m tempted to press the issue. “Thank you for the breakfast. You know I love this.” I smile at her and ruffle her hair.

“Ah, I see you two have made up.” I look up and see Jayden walking into the kitchen. He stops at Brooklyn to give her a hug. I love watching them together.

“We can’t stay apart for long. When you are done, I will take you to school this morning and maybe we can go to the park after school.” Brooklyn and I both look at Jayden with our best puppy dog eyes. He chuckles and nods. Brooklyn finishes her breakfast and runs to get ready for school. I take the dishes and start to clean up.

“So you found your mate, huh?” I look at Jayden and nod. “Congratulations.” I turn back to wash dishes, not really knowing what to say in response. “You don’t seem that excited.” I turn back to Jayden and sigh.

“I’m not sure how I should be feeling. I know what I have seen around me when friends have found their mates and I know what we learned growing up. I just am not feeling what I thought I would feel and I’m not sure why.” Jayden nods and seems to be pondering something.

“Maybe, once you two get closer, the bond will get stronger.” I sigh.

“That’s what Kehlani said yesterday. I get that and I’m holding out for that, but I’m not so sure.”

“What does Winnie say about all of this?” I sigh again.

“She is just as confused as I am. We are both hoping that you and Kehlani are right and the bond grows in time.” Jayden pats me on the shoulder before going back to the room. Brooklyn comes running out.

“I’m ready for school! I can’t wait to go to the park later.” I laugh and take Brooklyn’s hand. We walk down the stairs and out to the car.

I’ve seen Brooklyn throughout the day and she has been giving me, what I can only describe as, the stink eye. I’m not sure why that is, but it is letting me know that she may end up being an issue at some point. I will have to keep that in mind and keep things close to the vest to make sure she can’t interfere in what I need to do.

At the end of the school day, I head outside behind Brooklyn. I can see Melanie waiting for her. The two embrace and I walk up to them. Melanie notices me and smiles. Brooklyn looks at me and grimaces. I will definitely have to keep an eye on her. “How was your night?”

“It was good. I went home and went to sleep.” I nod in acknowledgement.

“Brooklyn, how was your day?” She looks down at her feet and mumbles ‘fine’. I look back at Melanie. “Maybe we can go get some coffee or something.” Melanie looks at Brooklyn, then back at me.

“We are actually going to the park,” she says while opening the door for Brooklyn. Melanie closes the door and looks back at me. “You can join us if you like.” I don’t really want to hang out with the kids, but this may be the best thing to do. Melanie and I need to get on a good level and the more time we spend, the easier that will be. I smile and nod at her. She gives me directions to the park. I walk her to the driver's side and help her get in, giving her a kiss on the cheek. I close the door and head over to my car not missing the glare from Brooklyn.
