Chapter 12: Todd Takes A Test

1153 Words
When the teacher, Mr. Kang, saw Todd, he frowned and said, “Master Bower, I am surprised to see you here today; and you are late. If you were going to be late, why didn't you just ask for leave and stay home?" Todd’s face turned red from embarrassment. I’m sorry,” he said. “Due to an urgent matter, I didn't have time to ask for leave, but I did want to make it to class. Nothing like this will happen in the future." Todd's apologetic attitude surprised Kang. He gave Todd a strange look, and then he moved on. He took out a stack of test papers and said, "Students, you will be taking a pop-test today, so I hope that you have all been studying." After speaking, he handed the test paper to the math class’ representative, Eve Roberts. Eve started to pass out the test papers, and when she arrived at Todd’s desk, they were both surprised to see that there was not a test for him. Why am I being discriminated against? – he wondered.  He held up his hand, and after Kang acknowledged him, he said, "Mr. Kang, I don't have a test paper..." “I wasn’t expecting you,” the teacher explained. “You have missed too much class, anyway. You would just fail the test, so what is the point?” Todd frowned and looked around nervously. He could see the mirth in the eyes of his peers, and he did not appreciate being made into a spectacle. Kang was correct, though. Todd had missed a lot of class time, and it was reasonable to think that he would not know any of the answers. He had an additional six years of life experience to draw from, though, and he was confident that he could easily ace this test. A minute passed, and just as Kang was about to move on, Todd stood up. He crossed his arms beneath his chest and said, "I want to take the exam. Then, when the grades come in, I expect an apology from you." “Fine.” Kang’s face turned red from anger. “You shall take the test. But when your grades come in, I will share them with the entire school, whether they are good or bad, and then everyone will know what a spoiled brat you are! Is that what you want?” “That suits me fine,” Todd replied. “You make the test sound hard.” He looked at Eve, and then he laughed. “But not only will I get the highest score in the class, but I will finish first. That way, you can mark it while we wait for everyone else to finish up.” Todd’s classmates were stunned. Eve was the only one who seemed close to believing in him. The reason why was because she had studied with him and she knew what he was capable of. That being said, it looked like she had a few of her own doubts, but that was only because she didn’t know about his rebirth. Kang excused himself and when he returned, he had a test for Todd. He leaned over, and as he put the papers on the desk, he said, “You are going down, you pretentious little punk. By the time this class ends, you will be on your way to becoming the school’s biggest laughingstock!” Todd smirked and disrespectfully patted the teacher’s cheek. “We’ll see… We’ll see…” The entire class gasped. They had never seen a student talk to or treat a teacher like this. Even Kang was shocked, and he was so taken aback that he forgot to discipline Todd. By all rights, he should have sent the kid to the principal’s office, but by the time he had spotted his error in judgment, it was too late. Kang walked to the front of the room, sat at his desk, and said, “Students, you may begin your tests.” When Eve saw the questions, she began to worry, not for herself, but for Todd. These pop-up tests were not counted in their grades, so they often contained a lot of material that had not been covered yet. Teachers did this to gauge where the class was at so that they could plan future lessons accordingly. If she failed it, it would not be a big deal. If Todd failed it, though, it would cost him his reputation, and the teacher would have him by his short hairs. There is no way that he will pass this! – she thought sadly. It was not long, though, before Todd lifted his hand and said, “I have finished the test. May I hand it in?” When Kang heard this, he smirked. The fact that Todd had finished his test so quickly was a dead giveaway that he had failed. He nodded and said, “Bring it here and I will mark it right away.” Todd brought up the paper, and when Kang looked at it, he could not believe what he was seeing. How could this punk kid get every question right? – he wondered. It did not make any sense to him. The handwriting was very neat, and the answers were all correct. Not only that, but the detailed formulas were written beneath each question, which proved, not only that he wasn’t cheating, but that he knew what he was talking about.  Kang knew what he had to do. He stood up and faced the class. “Students,” he began. “Please excuse me for a moment. I have a quick announcement. Todd has already handed in his test, and he has scored one hundred percent on it.” He turned to Todd and said, “It seems that I owe you an apology. Do you have anything to say? Any studying tips? …And will you forgive me?” Todd had not expected to be put on the spot like this and his cheeks turned pink. “Of course, I forgive you,” he replied. “As for tips… I do not know… Sleep during your morning classes so that you are well rested whenever you get a surprise test. Also, men and women should cooperate as often as possible." He smiled and winked at Eve. Suddenly, the bell rang in his mind and Todd saw that his system had given him full marks. The students were amazed by Todd’s achievement. They could not believe that after years of being a slacker, he had suddenly turned into a fountain of knowledge. It made no sense to them, and a few of them suspected foul play.
