Jonathan POV
Dave spent a couple more hours showing us around. We saw the Luna one other time, surrounded by four toddlers that Dave told us were the Alpha's and her oldest kids. He told us they had six altogether. I was shocked that someone so young had so many kids - Dave told us that they called them pups - but he explained that their oldest four were adopted after being orphaned. As we drove and walked around the territory, Jameson was his usual quiet self, taking everything in and soaking in his surroundings, while I, as usual, was full of questions. Jameson would ask a question here and there, but mostly he was just listening when Dave answered my questions.
When we got back to the house, Linda had lunch ready and waiting for us. She had several stacks of some of the biggest ham and cheese sandwiches I'd ever seen. It seemed that werewolves loved to eat just as much and often as we did. When I commented that, Linda just laughed. She said that, being werewolves, they had a higher metabolism than your average human, so they needed to consume more food.
"I would assume it's the same with Lycans," she told us. "Even though you can't shift just yet, you still have some of your Lycan abilities, such as fast healing. And I'm guessing you probably also have your Lycan speed and strength too. All of that speeds up your metabolism. Have you noticed yourselves being stronger or faster since you met your Lycans?"
I thought back to the cracked window on my Mustang, and Jameson almost breaking a rib just by patting my back. I nodded. "Well, I've noticed both of us are stronger," I replied. "I haven't tried to run anywhere since then, so I'm not too sure about that. Jameson, have you noticed yourself being faster?"
He shook his head. "I haven't tried to run anywhere either."
Dave grinned at us. "We should rectify that later. Are you boys still planning on going on patrol with me after lunch?"
I nodded. "Yep. Is there anywhere we could try out this whole Lycan speed thing?"
"There sure is," he replied. "There's some open fields that are easily a few football fields long. We can use those."
I was excited. I couldn't wait to see if Linda was right. I glanced over at Jameson and the look on his face told me he felt the same way.
We finished our lunches and piled back into Dave's car to drive down to what he called the station - that is, the meeting point for the warriors going out on patrol. He greeted several of the warriors and introduced us to the ones we'd be on patrol with. There were five going in our group, not counting Jameson and me. He said there were ten on patrol in total, but they had recently started splitting up into separate groups to cover more ground.
The five that he introduced us to were Mitchell DeLand, Nevil Anderson, Stacy Lean, and Barry Camp. They all greeted us with handshakes and smiles before we headed out the door and went towards the northern end of the territory. Dave told us the other team would start on the northern end as well, but while we would head towards the western border, they would go to the east, and we would all cross each other at the southern end. Both teams made one complete round of the territory before heading back home for the night.
We'd been patrolling for a couple of hours before we came across the fields Dave had mentioned.
"All right, guys, let's see if one or both of you have that Lycan speed. Start at that end of the field, and see how quickly you can run to the other end."
The field in question was easily three football fields long, maybe four. I went first. I took off from one end of the field and was beyond shocked when I was at the other end in about three seconds. I looked back in shock, and Dave and the other warriors cheering and whistling. I saw Jameson started running, and before I could blink he was right beside me.
"What the....Dude, that's insane!" I yelled.
"Beyond insane," Jameson agreed. "Come on, let's race back and see who's fastest."
We both took off running and arrived back at the other end at the exact same second. Without even speaking, we grinned at each other, turned around, and ran back to the other end at the same breakneck speed. We did this several times before we both stopped, looked at each other, and laughed at the sheer joy and wonder of it. We should have been huffing and puffing, but we were barely winded. And apparently our speed was equal - neither of us seemed to be able to beat the other.
Dave and his fellow warriors were all grinning at us, laughing along with us and cheering. I guess it wasn't every day they got to watch not one but two Lycans finding their abilities for the first time. A couple of them even challenged us to a race a couple of times, and even though they used their werewolf speed, it was taking them about five seconds to cross the field as opposed to our three seconds.
'I told you,' Damien told me smugly. 'Lycans are pretty much superior at everything.'
I snorted. 'And you're so humble about it too.'
'Who said I have to be humble?' he asked me. 'It's not bragging if it's true, you know.'
I laughed at that. 'Keep telling yourself that.'
'Wait til you see what I look like,' he said proudly. 'You'll be bragging too - on what a handsome beast you have living in your head.'
'Yeah, because that doesn't sound crazy at all,' I replied.
Just then, Barry and Dave both challenged us to another race, and we were off again. I was definitely starting to like this Lycan thing.
