CHAPTER 2Before tonight, Carlo would’ve said he’d trust Joe Donnelly over Hiram Stout no matter what. Until the day he’d received the note to meet Mr. Stout, he’d never had occasion to speak to him other than to take his order at Grande Joie. He'd overheard plenty, though. The cold efficiency with which the man did business was as scary as anything Carlo had ever seen back in the neighborhood. He was always sick for hours after Mr. Stout left the restaurant. The only reason Carlo had agreed to talk to him at all was the promise of his big break. He'd been working like a dog to get noticed, but so far, no dice.
