“Basically, we’re just waiting for Doc Jacobson to get his findings,” Captain Winston replied.
“Isn’t it a bit early for the autopsy report?” I asked.
“It’s not the current autopsy report he’s bringing, but two previous reports he’s worked on,” the Captain informed us.
“Oh,” I looked at him with an eyebrow arched. “Did I miss something?”
“At the scene, Doc mumbled something that he'd seen the same injuries before,” Roger spoke up. “And then his assistant remarked that Rhonda didn’t take her last breath there. She was placed there.”
“Yeah, thanks to Blackwater, we have security footage verifying that statement.” I casually commented.
“Speaking of Blackwater,” Roger quipped. “If you didn’t look like s**t, you and he could almost pass as brothers. You both have that scowl thing going on.”
“I do not have a scowl,” I argued back, subconsciously glaring at him with a scowl.
“There it is,” he snickered, pointing at my face. Cass, George, and Captain Winston couldn’t hold in their laughter either. “How else do you think I was able to stand up to him? Dealing with your ugly mug on a daily basis gave me practice.”
Thank the Moon, my wolf is quiet, or else Roger’s body would be embedded into the wall like a cartoon character. And with that thought, it’s very probable that Peter Bryant’s murderer is in fact a werewolf. But how would one prove such? We technically don’t exist, but yet, here we are living among you.
“Until Chief Edwards and Lieutenant Barton sort out the mess that narcotics have made, let’s just go over what we do have,” Captain Winston suggests.
“I don’t know why I didn’t notice it sooner,” Doc Jacobson apologized, walking into our area. He handed me the autopsy files of Avery Reynolds and Ellie Kingston. Both do in fact show extremely similar injuries. If Rhonda’s body shows the same, we might have a serial killer on the loose. Just what we don’t need. We need to dig deeper into the evidence collected from both previous crime scenes. Hopefully, Emerson and Deeks did their jobs well in gathering all that’s needed. I hate having to go back and re-interview someone. Hell, the first time asking is hard. It’s horrible having to bring up a painful memory just because there are holes in the timeline.
“We need to find the evidence boxes for both Avery Reynolds and Ellie Kingston,” I barked out my orders. George immediately went down to the evidence locker to retrieve them. It’s located in a secret area in the bowels of the Police Department. “Do we know what evidence forensics was able to collect from the scene?” Everyone shook their heads. They were all too concerned over my sudden health scare.
Two days later, Wolfdale City University...
A mixture of green, yellow, and red leaves display themselves on the trees scattered across the campus. Warmer days are slowly ending. Students and even some faculty members take advantage of any warmth the sun's rays provide. Many have chosen to sit outside to either study or enjoy a meal at any of the picnic tables provided. At a picnic table that is well secluded from the others, Professor Patrick Bryant and Elizabeth Knight seem to be enjoying themselves in a friendly conversation. Perhaps it is a little too friendly for a professor and student to have. Hanna notices their flirtatious behavior when she and Mitch step out from the edge of the forest. Mitch helped release the bat that Hanna diligently took care of. The bruise wasn’t as bad as she first thought, so that helped. For someone who’s supposed to be into cross country running, Mitch didn’t seem to like the great outdoors so much. Maybe it was just the bat that had him on edge?
“Miss Knight, Professor Bryant, this is an unexpected surprise,” Hanna called out with a bit of concern in her voice. “And in this particular spot...”
“Miss Grimm, you startled me,” said Elizabeth, having the look of someone getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar.
“Hanna, I’m sure nothing nefarious has been happening,” Mitch butted in.
“I’m only here to give you the keys to my office, since I’ll still be out for a few more days,” Professor Bryant spoke up. “Miss Knight just happened to inform me that you were releasing that Chiroptera today. So, we were just waiting for your return.”
“Fine,” Hanna said, defeated, holding her hand out for the office keys. Patrick placed the keys into her hand.
“Miss Knight, don’t you have a class starting soon? I wouldn’t want you to be tardy,” Hanna gently reminded her.
“You’re right, I do! I haven’t been late yet. I need to skedaddle,” she said, gathering her books. “Bye, all.”
“Okay, so what the hell was that all about?” Patrick inquired of his TA.
“I’m just looking out for both of you,” Hanna confessed. “You don’t need to lose your job over high testosterone levels! And I don’t want to see Elizabeth Knight get expelled either... Sorry, that I care too much.” Hanna walked briskly away from both men, trying to hide the tears and sniffles. Patrick grabs Mitch’s arm roughly.
“Don’t you dare hurt her,” he hissed at his roommate. The look in his eyes held both concern and remorse.
“Since when did you start having a heart?” Mitch taunted back. “And which “her” to whom are you referring to, Hanna Grimm or Elizabeth Knight?” The Professor just glared back at his roommate, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down, knowing that Mitch had him between a rock and a hard place.
Wolfdale City Police Department, homicide...
For the past couple of days, the Captain, Cassidy, George, Roger, and I have been digging through the evidence boxes and files. We are trying to figure out if there is a connection between the three or not. Leave it to Roger to find that there is no security footage of the areas where Avery’s and Ellie’s bodies were found. But according to the locations, each one would have IR cameras set up in the areas. Priority #1 is finding out who owns either the property and has the security footage in question, and legally obtaining it. Since it was Roger who discovered that, I handed that task over to him.
Are you wondering about the locations? Avery Reynolds’ body was discovered in a warehouse on top of a pallet of drinking straws. Weird, right? Ellie Kingston’s body was found among the bushes of the City’s prize-winning roses in the lavish Botanical Gardens. If it wasn’t for her mutilated body, it looked like she was in a peaceful, eternal slumber. And you should recall that Rhonda Addams’ body was found among a stack of lumber. All three are in very odd locations. I can only imagine what the security footage will show from the warehouse and the Botanical Gardens.
