Geyserville, Sonoma County, 2days before the k********g…
For a couple of minutes, I sat there in shock, my mind in shambles at the recent turn of events. Most people might see news like this as a good one, but I’m not most people.
Despite the mistreatment I get from Sara daily, I still find my life with her to be comfortable and familiar. These people, whoever they are, are unfamiliar and I have no idea if they’re trustworthy.
Life experience has taught me to always be cautious and never look at things with half lids. Standing, I silently head to my room and try not to overly panic.
With shaky hands I pull out the old duffel bag underneath my twin-sized bed and start packing the few belongings I’ve acquired all through my 17 years of living, the only thing of some worth is the silver flip-phone I’d managed to scrap my savings to buy out of necessity.
The emerald pendant the orphanage had found on me as a baby, and the small bundle of savings I’d kept aside for when I finally turn 18.
I knew, my life with Sara had been growing short the older I got, but I didn’t think it’d be this short, not this soon.
Once I was done packing, my room door opened and a grinning Sara stood on the threshold. I tried not to cringe at the sight of her yellowed teeth and pulled the strap of my duffel bag over my shoulder. “They’re here already?”
“Yes, so I hope your done packing. I don’t want to keep them waiting long.”
With a feeling of dread, I nod. “I’m done.”
“Good,” She nodded and motioned me out. “Now hurry, the sooner you leave, the better.”
I proceeded behind slowly as she made her way downstairs, in fear I kept my head down as I strode and only rose it up when 2 shiny pair of expensive shoes slipped into my line of vision.
In surprise at how close the man stood in front of me, I gasp and step back. I had to bend my head back in other to stare up at him despite my height, and when I did the first thing I noticed is his honey blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes.
They peered into mine for a long, intense minute before his gaze shifted down the rest of my face. And when he turned to address Sara, I released a breath I didn’t even know I held in.
“Thank you so much for your cooperation Ms McGregor, the money you requested will be deposited into your account in the next 24hrs.”
Money, what money? I turn to Sara in confusion.
I’ve never seen her smile so wide in my entire life until this moment, and the grip I had on the strap of my duffel tightened as I contemplated whether or not I am being sold.
A movement from my peripheral vision made me whirl in that direction and I blinked in surprise to see a large boy filling up the doorway, he stood almost as tall as the man standing next to me with dark shades covering his eyes and a mask covering the rest of his face.
But unlike the man with honey blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes, his hair is strawberry blonde and his porcelain skin is almost as white as mine. He stared straight ahead, never making even the slightest of movement as he crossed both hands before him.
“Miss Aurora,” I’m startled from my observation by the mention of my name and glanced up, staring into my eyes the man with sapphire eyes smiled down at me and motioned towards the door with a raised hand. “If you please, we should be on our way.”
I glance at Sara in panic but immediately averted my eyes when I met her hard glare, putting up a fuss would get me nowhere so I hesitantly take a step forward and continue walking until I’m standing before the boy blocking the doorway.
He shifts aside as soon as I drew closer and takes my duffel bag from my grip, but despite the small sound of protest that draws from my startled lips, he walks down to the black limo stretched out in front of our driveway and opens the back door.
Dumping the bag on the leather seat, he stands with the door still wide open and I realize he’s keeping the door open for me. “Go on Aurora, you don’t want to keep these men waiting now do you?”
Flinching at the threatening sound of anger in Sara’s voice, I rush down the small steps leading to our door and quickly got into the limo.
The door closed behind me and the boy slipped into the driver’s side to start the limo, I nervously fiddled with my hands as we waited for the man with sapphire eyes to get in after he said a few words to Sara.
But as soon as he settled down in the seat opposite mine, we were on our way, leaving behind the place I’d once called home.
