Chapter 2

Alex was changing Chloe upstairs when she heard Nina answering the door. Nina was her maid s***h nanny her father insisted she had when he had one of his men come and take her from Tuscany. Alex didn’t want to go home and hated that her father insists on it. Chloe and her where bonding so well and she didn’t want to leave the last place she had seen Meagan alive. Her father didn’t listen to reason, he didn’t listen to anyone he just spoke and expected people to obey. He just wanted her where he could control her. She had never hated her father more than she did now. In the last eighteen months, she had discovered more secrets about him than ever. He had way too many skeletons in the closet. So that’s how Alex ended up here in his home with a nanny s***h maid on hand twenty-four hours a day, and she hated it! She felt like Nina was reporting every phone call, every conversation, everything to her dad! Nina entered the room. “Alex, there is a gentleman downstairs he says his from your dad’s office and wants to see you.” Great, what now? “Thank you, Nina. Could you take Chloe into the nursery and get some blocks down so she can play.” Nina obediently followed orders. She always seemed happy when Alex allowed her to help with Chloe, although it was rare. Alex hoped she wasn’t going to be dragged down to her father’s office again. She was tired, last night Chloe had had a temperature and didn’t sleep well, which meant Alex didn’t sleep well either. Making today unbearable that’s why she was dressed in a pair of denim jeans, which had seen better days and a white tee shirt, with no bra. She never seemed to really need a bra, so why bother. As she walked down the stairs, she noticed there was baby spew on her shoulder. Yikes! It Stunk! How did formula go in so well and come out so bad? “Hello, Alex.” Before she looked up from her spewy shirt, she knew whom it was. His voice was embedded into her brain and seemed to still be able to make her body come alive. His voice smooth and soft. She remembered a time when that voice meant fun and love to be had. She also remembered when that voice changed to the cold icy tones of a businessman. Loathing her body right now for responding to his sexy voice she realised too late how important it would have been to wear a bra in this situation. Perhaps it could have hidden her reaction to him. She would just have to hope he hadn’t noticed her n*****s standing to attention. All from the sound of his voice. “Jacob, is father o.k?” why else would he be here. Jacob had never allowed them to be alone since that day. She remembered thinking if she could get him alone and run her fingers through his short black hair, run her hands over his washboard stomach maybe, just maybe she could convince him to stay with her. To take back the terrible words he said to her that horrible day. “Your father is fine, he asked me to deliver this.” He held her cheque in his hand. She could only imagine what he thought of her, sponging off her dad. He wouldn’t know the truth just her, and her dad did, and that’s the way it would stay for Chloe’s sake. She walked past him and took the cheque. She got a faint sniff of his after-shave lotion. The scent invaded her nostrils, her heart beating a little faster as she remembered the fragrance. It had been eighteen months since she had seen him and he still erupted those feelings inside her. Would she ever be immune to him? “Nina has prepared some lunch, would you like to stay?” She felt sure he would say no. It seemed ever since he had shown up that night and told her it was over, he just couldn’t stand to be in the same room as her, especially alone. “That would be wonderful.” They moved toward the dining room. She went to get another place setting for him. “Would you like a drink?” She asked feeling quite strange sitting in the same room as him and being polite. “Water would be great.” She retrieved cold water from the fridge in the kitchen and joined him back at the tabled. “So.” He said. “So?” She said. There was a time when they didn’t mind the silence between them because they couldn’t keep their hands and mouth off each other. This silence was different; this was an uncomfortable silence. “This is a great house, your dad is really generous to let you live here.” Yeah, really generous! “Let’s just say, he wanted me close by to watch me.” She said without hiding the sarcasm. “You must be grateful, I mean you have your own nanny, a great car, a fantastic place to live. You’re fortunate!” She couldn’t believe him. She was so far from fortunate it hurt. “I was quite happy where I was, I didn’t need to be escorted home by goons like a child who had been misbehaving!” She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. “From what I’ve heard you were a misbehaving child.” He said her body vibrated with anger. “Well, maybe your father was just doing what was best for you.” “Best for me! Ha! My father does what’s best for him, and that’s all! He is selfish, a coward and he enjoys hurting people.” “I’m curious, how is it you have such a low opinion of your father, but you are always happy to spend his money?” Jacob was sick of hearing what a terrible man her father was. She was so happy to take trips on him, live in a house he gave her a full wage and a nanny. What more did she want from him, he never met anyone more spoiled than this girl. How on earth would he marry her! He would have to find a way because he wanted the company. “You don’t know my father like I do, I suggest he may not be the saint you think he is.” “Saint!” Jacob couldn’t believe his ears; she was questioning someone about being a saint. “I find it a little contradictory of you to comment about sainthood.” “What the hell do you mean by that!” Her face turned red with anger. “Your dad had told me about your – for lack of a better word – relationship before you went away then running away to avoid facing the consequences of being pregnant. To me, it doesn’t seem that your much of a saint, maybe that runs in the family.” “You know nothing about my life, at all! How dare you assume to know about me!” She screamed at him. “I’m not assuming. I know what your dad has told me, you live in a house that he owns, you drive a car that he purchased, you go off on trips overseas that he pays for and he pays you a wage so you can stay at home and do whatever you like.” Jacob was raising his voice this was meant to be a friendly lunch, she just pushed all the wrong buttons with him, and he was still stunned at the amount of the cheque she received from her dad. He froze when he heard a baby crying. “Great, look what you have done now!” She stormed off to one of the rooms. Nina met her halfway. “She wants her mummy. I tried to calm her but then she heard voices raised!” Nina looked over at Jacob with contempt. “Shh, Shh, Chloe.” He watched as she settled Chloe with ease only a mother could provide. Chloe then started gurgling. “That’s better isn’t it?” She turned to face Jacob, her face red with Anger. Although her voice was sweet, to not upset the baby her intentions were clear. “You claim to know so much about me Jacob.” She practically spat his name “You don’t know s**t! Not everything is, as it seems. Once, not so long ago I thought you to be a different person, a kind, caring person, I’m so glad I see the true you. You’re just one of my dad’s lackey’s do what he says when he says. So go, do whatever it is my daddy wants you to. Just don’t involve me in your life!” She pointed to the door. He watched her for a while before saying anything, she was livid with him and soothing and gentle with Chloe. He looked while she gently swayed Chloe on her hip and it seemed so right. So natural. Chloe was gripping at her shirt making it tighter across her breast he had already noticed she wasn’t wearing a bra, he really didn’t need the extra view. A sensation burst through his body as it had done a long time ago. He was amazed at her post-baby body. Six months down the track and you couldn’t even tell she had been pregnant. She may hate him right now but, oh, the fun he would have with her after they were married. That just sweetened the deal all the more. “I’m no one's lackey, Alex.” He said with gritted teeth. “I am accepting a delightful deal. Unfortunately, it does involve you. I suggest you talk with your father and soon. Be seeing ya.” He left. The look on her face when he mentioned the deal involved her! So it seems his decision was made, he would accept Grant’s offer after all. He went straight back to the office to confirm.
