Ellie stumbled into the mansion, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The heavy front door banged shut behind her, the sound echoing through the grand, empty hallways. Panic tightened her chest as she searched frantically for anyone who could help.
“Help!” Ellie shouted, her voice cracking. “Someone, please!”
Footsteps echoed from down the hall, and moments later, Natalie and Jonathan appeared, their faces etched with concern.
“Ellie, what’s wrong?” Natalie asked, rushing to her side. “You look terrified!”
“It’s Lucas,” Ellie gasped, her eyes wide with fear. “He’s fighting someone in the woods! We need to help him!”
Jonathan’s expression hardened, and he grabbed a heavy walking stick from a nearby stand. “Where is he? Take us to him.”
Ellie nodded, her legs trembling as she turned back towards the door. “This way. Hurry!”
The three of them sprinted back out into the night, the flashlight beams cutting through the dark. Ellie led them towards the spot where she had left Lucas, her heart pounding with fear and desperation.
As they neared the clearing, they heard the sounds of a struggle—grunts, growls, and the rustling of leaves. Ellie’s stomach knotted with dread. She prayed they weren’t too late.
“There!” Ellie pointed, her voice strained.
In the dim light, they saw Lucas grappling with the wild-eyed man. The man’s clothes were torn and dirty, and his eyes glinted with a dangerous intensity. He had Lucas pinned to the ground, his hands clawing at Lucas’s throat.
“Get off him!” Jonathan shouted, brandishing the stick. He charged forward, swinging the weapon at the man’s head.
The man howled in pain as the stick struck him, and he recoiled, releasing Lucas. Lucas gasped for breath, scrambling to his feet and away from his attacker.
Natalie rushed to Lucas’s side, helping him stand. “Are you okay?”
Lucas nodded weakly, rubbing his throat. “I’m fine. Thanks to you guys.”
The wild-eyed man staggered backwards, clutching his head. His gaze flicked between Ellie, Lucas, and Jonathan, a twisted snarl forming on his lips.
“You think you’ve won?” the man spat, his voice filled with venom. “This is just the beginning. You have no idea what’s coming.”
With that, he turned and bolted into the woods, disappearing into the darkness. The sound of his retreating footsteps gradually faded, leaving an eerie silence in their wake.
Ellie’s legs felt like jelly, and she collapsed onto the ground, her body trembling. “Who was that? Why did he attack us?”
Lucas leaned heavily on Natalie, his breathing ragged. “I don’t know. But he seemed to think we’re a threat.”
Jonathan frowned, his grip tightening on the stick. “He mentioned something about knowing too much. What does he mean?”
Ellie shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. “I have no idea. But whatever it is, we need to find out before someone gets hurt—or worse.”
Natalie looked at Lucas, her eyes filled with worry. “We need to get you inside, Lucas. You’re hurt.”
“I’m okay,” Lucas insisted, though his voice was weak. “We need to figure out who that guy was and why he’s after us.”
Jonathan glanced towards the mansion, a determined look on his face. “First, we need to get inside and regroup. Then we can figure out our next move.”
Ellie nodded, her resolve hardening. She helped Lucas stand, and together, they made their way back to the mansion. As they crossed the threshold, Ellie couldn’t shake the feeling that this attack was only a prelude to something far more sinister.
Once inside, Jonathan secured the doors and turned to the group. “We need a plan. If that guy comes back, we have to be ready.”
Natalie helped Lucas onto a couch, her eyes never leaving his face. “We should also contact the authorities. They need to know there’s a dangerous man out there.”
Ellie paced the room, her mind racing. “And we need to keep searching for answers. My grandmother’s journal might hold clues about what’s going on.”
Lucas nodded, wincing slightly as he sat up. “We have to be careful, though. Whoever that was, he’s not working alone. There’s more to this than we know.”
Jonathan’s eyes narrowed in thought. “We’ll take shifts keeping watch tonight. If anyone tries to get in, we’ll be ready.”
Ellie glanced at Lucas, worry etched on her face. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
Lucas gave her a reassuring smile, though his eyes were filled with concern. “I’ll be fine, Ellie. We just need to stay vigilant.”
Ellie nodded, her resolve strengthening. “We will. We’ll get to the bottom of this. Together.”
But as she looked out the window into the shadowy forest, a chill ran down her spine. The attack had left them with more questions than answers, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched.
Ellie knew they had to be ready for whatever was coming. The darkness outside seemed to press in closer, and she felt a growing sense of foreboding that this was just the beginning of their troubles.
And as the night deepened, an unseen presence lingered at the edge of the forest, watching them with eyes that glowed faintly in the moonlight. The danger was far from over, and Ellie couldn’t escape the chilling realization that their nightmare had only just begun.
