Chapter 12: Doubt

1118 Words
Gwy's POV After that day, Alpha Devon stopped bothering me for a while. I don't know what to feel, but my spirit is low today. Deena appeared before me with her smiley face. "Miss Hathaway! It's time to take a tour of the whole pack. Alpha Devon ordered me to accompany you. He said that you have to learn for you to formally take over the Luna position," she informed me proactively. "Where is he?" "Alpha is now working in his office. He's busy during weekdays and sometimes he doesn't go home." "H-he doesn't go home? Then, what about me?" I pointed at myself. Is he going to abandon me here all by myself? Ha! I can't believe him! "Don't worry, Miss Hathaway, Alpha made sure you will be safe with me while he's gone." "I'm not so sure of that Deena. You saw the way that Latina b***h talked to me the other day? She'll do that again now that Devon is not around!" It's not that I'm afraid of that Latina b***h. It's just that she might give me that disgusted stare and all the get-the-hell-out-of-here drama. I don't have the energy to argue with someone and the last thing I would do is to make a spell and punish her! "Don't worry, Miss Hathaway. Alpha has given me the authority to protect you no matter what. I'm sure he knew that many of the pack members disliked you, so he asked me to do the job," she reassured me. I arched my brow at her. "What about you? Do you dislike me, too?" She laughed a little bit and shook her head. "Of course not, Miss! I like your bubbly personality and I certainly know that you have a good heart. You have to understand that Beta Margaux has acted as a proxy Luna for the past 2 years since Alpha Devon's reign. Many are used to her as the Pack's Luna, but unfortunately, a pack has to function well. "Beta Margaux is the only Beta-female and no one could beat her to her title, so she is still fit for her position. Hence, the council, with the help of the former Alpha, forces Alpha Devon to find his fated mate. So, here you are!" she said in a long statement. "I see. Is that really a big deal for an Alpha to have a mate by his side?" "Yes, Miss. In other packs, they are obliged to have a luna even if they are not their mates. But in the Black Dew Pack, the Alpha is forced to find his fated mate no matter what. If not, he will be removed from the post by the former Alpha. I rare occasions, if the former Alpha is non-functional, he will have to choose another successor. Sometimes, it is the Beta. But Beta Margaux is a female and she cannot lead the pack," she answered. So, that's why Devon was so obsessed with having me as his mate. It's because if he fails to find his fated luna, I am his only chance to retain his seat as the Alpha. I didn't know that this was serious until now. But that Margaux... I just feel that she will bother me again. Deena and I started to tour around the pack. She proactively taught me some of the norms inside Black Dew. Just as New York is the face of the whole state, Black Dew Pack is also the biggest and most successful pack in this region. I could see Devon's face on posters around the city. Every girl around is smitten by his remarkable physique. I wonder why he doesn't seem to care about finding his mate for 2 years. But if it's true that I'm his fated mate, then I must be the reason why he's struggling for so long. I learned so much about Black Dew and I began to see how marvelous this pack is. A shaman like me has no pack to belong to. We also don't belong to the rogues, but anciently speaking, shamans are gathered in a formation of temples and we call it a tribe. Celtic and Norse also have their own tribes. They are considered strays like rogues, but an eastern witch prominently belongs to the Eastern Tribe. We're like royalties in the witch kingdom. I've lived for two decades and I never associated myself with any pack. Even the Fountain Pack couldn't convince me to be one of their citizens. Alpha Qirak was always persistent about that. I sighed. I missed my temple. If only I could get out of here, I would fold my temple and keep it inside my pocket. "So... how was the tour around, Witch?" Margaux greeted us. We were on our way back to the packhouse when she popped out of nowhere. I rolled my eyes and tamed my inner demons. There she goes again... "Beta Margaux, pardon my disproval, but the Alpha specifically ordered me to guard Miss Hathaway while I tour her around," Deena suddenly butted in. "Shut up! Are you acting as her Gamma now?" She scoffed. "You better get the hell out of here, Deena. I have no time to make friends with this witch. If I get rid of her, I will still be the Luna!" She was about to launch her claws at me when suddenly, a powerful voice interrupted us. "Enough!" the loud voice said. Margaux shivered and looked to her side. "M-Mr. Guillermo..." Mr. Guillermo, the former alpha appeared before us. We all bowed down to him. "What's this commotion, Beta?" he asked while looking at Margaux. "N-nothing, Sir! I was just talking to Ms. Hathaway," she lied. I scoffed silently and crossed my arms on my chest. Liar! "Go back to your post, Beta. This is not the right time to roam around here." "Y-yes, Sir..." Margaux quickly disappeared. After that, Mr. Guillermo looked at me with curiosity. "Are you okay, Ms. Hathaway?" "Y-yes, Sir. By the way, what has brought you here?" I asked. "I was watching you the whole time, Ms. Hathaway. I am impressed that you are beginning to like Black Dew Pack," he said as he laughed in a bubbly way. "I need to study the pack's diverse system. This pack is a wonderful place," I said sincerely. "Well, I'm glad that you like it here! Please continue to study..." then he was murmuring something under his breath. "I'm so sorry?" He shook his head. "Nah! It's nothing. See you around..." then he quickly disappeared. That was weird. There's something imminent about him. Devon's father, the former alpha of Black Dew Pack. Is he a friend or a foe?
