Hunter
Kailen left the morgue quickly, and I didn’t blame her. I couldn’t imagine how she was feeling smelling that bastard’s scent again. I was furious on the inside, but I couldn’t comfort her in public; I knew that would only make it worse. Running after her and making a scene wouldn’t help her with how she was feeling.
“What does the message on her back mean?” Alpha Owen asked me while we walked out of the room. I noticed the warriors went with Kailen, which I was thankful for.
“The M is for a man named Marcus. He was the one who bought Kailen and held her for almost six months.” I sighed. Alpha Owen grabbed my arm to stop me.
“Wait, how do you know that?” He asked me, confused.
“She noticed his smell, that’s what was making her feel sick. I don’t think she’ll ever forget that scent.” I told him.
“She could be lying?” His Beta said. Zach, Greyson and I all growled. We read Kailen’s file. This isn’t a lie or a joke.
“Are you questioning our King’s gamma?” Zach growled out.
“No, sir. We just have evidence that Kailen ran away, not kidnapped, like she claimed.” Beta Finn said, and his alpha growled.
“One thing Kailen is not, is a liar. Stand down, Finn!” Alpha Owen defended Kailen. But now I was curious about what evidence they had in Kailen’s case.
“I want her case file.” I demanded the Beta.
“The crown should have a copy of the file.” The Alpha challenged.
“I’ve read her file and there was nothing in there about her running away. I want that file now!” I commanded.
I pushed past them and walked out of the building. I found Kailen, she was by the boot of her SUV. She was leaning over with her hands on her knees. The warriors were standing around her. I asked them to stay with her. I didn’t trust anyone in this pack, especially after the way the Luna spoke to Kailen.
“Greyson, go with Beta Finn and get me that file. Alpha Owen, when Kailen is ready, we are heading to the crime scene.” I turned towards them and ordered. I then made my way over to Kailen. I had the warriors make a wall around us so no one would see us. The lift was open and she was leaning on the bumper now.
“You okay?” I asked her, wrapping my arms around her. The warriors had their backs to us and no one could see through them or through the tinted windows.
To my surprise, Kailen didn’t pull away. Instead, she wrapped her arms around my waist and leaned her head onto my chest. Her heart rate was elevated and her breathing was laboured.
“I don’t understand, Hunter. Why?” she whispered into my chest.
“I don’t know, Beautiful. But he is never getting you. I would never let that happen, okay?” I whispered to her, and she nodded into my chest. I knew the warriors could hear us, but I didn’t care.
“Just breathe, it will be okay.” I tried to comfort her as I rubbed her back. She was holding on to me like I was her lifeline, and it broke me to see her like that. She was always so strong, but to see how much that monster broke her infuriated me. I was going to rip him apart. Prison was too good for him.
“Whenever you’re ready, we’ll hike up to the crime scene, okay?” I told her. I leaned down and kissed the top of her head. I honestly didn’t care if anyone saw us. I love her and I want the whole world to know that she is mine.
“I’m ready.” She breathed out. I pulled away to take her cheeks into my hands. I brushed away a stray tear that started to fall down her cheek.
“There’s no rush,” I told her.
“The faster we get this done, the faster we get to go home.” She told me. Our noses were almost touching, and she surprised me when she leaned in, touching her lips to mine. She pulled away, but I quickly brought my lips back to hers.
One of the warriors cleared his throat, making us pull away from each other. I rested my forehead against hers while we tried to calm our breathing.
“What is it?” I asked, still looking into her forest green hazel eyes. She looked so broken and I wish I could just take her away from this place.
“The Alpha is ready.” One of the warriors answered. And Kailen sighed.
“Let’s get this over with.” She breathed out. She turned away from me to grab her work backpack. She put it on and passed me a backpack with extra clothes and supplies for the hike.
Before she made it past our wall of warriors, I pulled her back into my chest. I leaned into her neck, breathing in her scent.
“Are you sure about this?” I whispered in between giving her neck soft kisses. She nodded, and we walked through the warriors to find everyone waiting.
“Gamma Kailen, are you alright?” Alpha Owen asked her.
“Yes, thank you, Alpha Owen.” She answered him. I noticed Beta Finn was glaring at her, and I wondered what his problem was. I didn’t get a chance to ask him, as the front door to the pack house was thrown open. I noticed Kailen jumped from the noise. I reached out, pulling her back into my chest.
As soon as I touched her, I noticed Alpha Owen glaring, but I just glared back. Kailen is mine now, and I was never letting her go. And besides, he has his own Luna.
The former Alpha, Alpha Landon, rushed out of the pack house and down the porch. He walked right up to Kailen and wrapped her in a hug.
“Gamma Kailen, it’s so good to see you. How have you been, my dear?” He asked while pulling out of the hug but resting his hands on her shoulders. I noticed she flinched a little when he touched her left side. I wonder if my bite mark was still bothering her.
“I’ve been good, Alpha Landon. And you can just call me Kailen. There’s no need for titles.” She told him with a smile.
“Then you better just call me Landon, Gamma Kailen.” He joked with her.
“Deal, Mr. Landon.”
“Before you leave, should we have tea?” He asked her.
“That would be lovely. If not later today, we’ll be staying in the city another night and we could always meet in the morning.” She told him, and he nodded. He wrapped her in another hug.
“I’m so proud of you, Kailen.” He told her. He pulled away and was just staring at her now. It must be weird for him. She was supposed to be his daughter-in-law.
“Thank you, Mr. Landon.” She gave him a warm smile.
“I won’t keep you any longer. I know you have work to do, but come find me when you’re done.” He asked her.
“Of course.”
I could tell that the Alpha wasn’t happy with his father’s interaction with Kailen. The former Alpha seems to be quite genuine with her. But I can’t blame him, the now Luna looks like a b***h.
“Shall we?” Alpha Owen said, annoyingly. He started to walk in the direction of the crime scene and we followed behind him.
“Did you get it?” I asked Greyson when he and Zach moved beside me. Kailen was walking in front of us.
“I did. I locked it in the truck.” He said, and I gave him a pointed look. I knew what he was saying. They didn’t want me to have a look at that file. What the hell is wrong with this pack?
We continued walking until we came upon a reservoir. That’s when Kailen stopped walking. There seemed to be a small platform in the middle of the lake, with a small cabin.
“Gamma Kailen, what’s wrong?” Alpha Owen stepped closer to Kailen.
“When was this built?” She asked him.
“How do you know we built it?” He asked her and I could see her trying not to roll her eyes.
“The lake is new. Now when and why was it built?” She asked him, annoyed.
“It was built a few years ago, because we were having problems with flooding.” He answered her.
“Why is there a cabin-like structure in the middle of the lake?” She asked him.
“My father uses it for fishing. It has nothing to do with the body that was found.” He tried to explain. She walked over to the edge of the water and slid her backpack off. She was unzipping her hoodie when I approached her.
“Kailen, what are you doing?” I asked her, confused. She had placed her camera by her backpack and threw her hoodie over her backpack.
“I’m checking out the platform.” She told me, while kneeling down to untie her boots.
“Why? This area has nothing to do with the case.” Alpha Owen said behind me.
“I don’t need to explain myself to you, Alpha Owen.” She told him and I loved how she gave him so much attitude. She kicked her boots off and pulled her shirt over her head, exposing herself in her bra. I was immediately standing in front of her, trying to block the others from seeing her.
“Kailen, what are you thinking?” I asked her while she was undoing her jeans.
“Just trust me.” was all she said while she stripped off her jeans. She started to wade into the water until she was able to swim. I was thankful she was actually wearing underwear, and it wasn’t a thong.
“What is she doing?” Zach asked, as we watched her swim out to the platform.
“I don’t know, but we are trusting her.” I answered him.
“Is that a bite mark on her shoulder?” Greyson asked, and I knew he was smirking, but I didn’t answer.
“What a waste of time,” Beta Finn commented, and I growled.
“What the hell is your problem?”
“Your gamma is wasting all of our time with this bullshit. I wouldn’t be surprised if she set this all up herself to play the victim's card.” He exclaimed.
I was about to punch this f**k boy of a beta in the face, but his own Alpha beat me to it. Beta Finn fell to the ground, rubbing his jaw.
“Don’t you fucken dare talk about my mate like that?” He growled at his Beta.
