"Emily, marriage is one of the most important things in life. I won't allow you to do this." Ellen knew why Emily was doing this.
Emily put the lunch box down on the bedside table. As she unpacked it, she said, "It's not like I'll be marrying some stranger. He's your friend's son, isn't he?"
"She passed away a long time ago, and I don't even know her son. Even if I have to break a promise, I want you to marry someone you love. You shouldn't use your marriage as a bargaining chip. If so, I'd rather spend the rest of my life here."
Someone she loved?
Even if she were to meet that someone, she wouldn't be deserving of him.
Emily lowered her head. It didn't matter who she married. The important thing was to get back everything that had been taken away from her.
Ellen failed to change Emily's mind. The next day, they were back in their home country.
Because of Mason's dislike of them, he didn't allow them to step foot into the Davis family. Instead, he made them rent a place somewhere. Emily would only be allowed to go back on the day of the wedding.
It just so happened that Emily didn't want to go near the Davis family. If she and Ellen were to move in there, Ellen would have to face that homewrecker. They were better off staying on their own.
At least they'd have some peace and quiet.
Ellen was still worried. "Emily, regardless of my friendship with the Clay family's matriarch, you wouldn't be involved in this if this were a good thing."
Emily didn't want to talk about these things with her mother, so she changed the subject. "Mum, you should have your food while it's still warm."
Ellen sighed. Emily obviously didn't want to say any more on the matter. Ellen knew that she'd led to Emily going through all of this hardship, and Emily even had to sacrifice her marriage for Ellen's sake.
Emily got ready to eat as well, but she didn't have the appetite. In fact, she felt nauseous.
"Are you feeling ill?" Ellen asked with concern.
Emily didn't want her to worry, so she lied and said that she'd lost her appetite because of their plane ride.
She put down her fork and went into her room.
She closed the door and leaned against it. Emily had never been pregnant before, but she'd seen how Ellen was when she was with child. She'd felt nauseous all the time and never had the appetite to eat.
Now, Emily was showing the same symptoms.
It had been more than a month since that night, and her period was several days late.
Emily didn't dare to follow that train of thought. That night was an utter disgrace to her, and she wouldn't have done it if not for her mother and brother.
She trembled.
"You're six weeks pregnant."
As Emily walked out of the hospital, all she could think about was the doctor telling her that she was pregnant.
She'd come to the hospital without Ellen knowing to do a test, and this was the result. She was at a complete loss for what to do.
She couldn't help placing her hands over her abdomen. Though she was surprised and even ashamed, she still felt a sliver of reluctance.
She felt the joy and expectation of becoming a mother for the first time.
She was in a daze.
Back at their residence, Emily made sure to keep the ultrasound in her bag before entering the house.
However, her expression immediately turned dark when she saw Mason.
What was he doing here?
Mason didn't look all too pleased either, seemingly because he'd had to wait around for her. He said coldly, "Go get changed."
Emily frowned. "Why?"
"Since you're going to marry the eldest son of the Clay family, you'll have to meet him sometime." Mason appraised her. "Don't tell me you're going to disgrace me by meeting him looking like a peasant."
What was pain?
She'd thought that she'd already gone numb from the pain of selling herself and witnessing her brother's death.
Yet, when she heard Mason's heartless words, her heart still ached. She wasn't numb, after all.
He'd sent her and her mother to a poor, foreign country and had never given them a second thought since.
Where would she have got the money to make herself look better?
Her brother wouldn't have died if she'd had the money to treat him.
Emily balled her hands into fists.
Mason seemed to think of this as well, and he looked a little awkward. "Come on, the Clay family should be there by now. It's not polite to keep them waiting."
"Emily..." Ellen wanted to try to talk Emily out of it again. She'd already lost her son, and all she wanted was to ensure that her daughter lived a good life. Money no longer mattered to her.
She didn't want Emily to get involved with the Davis or Clay family.
These rich and powerful families all came with their complications, and who knew what the eldest son of the Clay family was like.
Ellen was worried.
"Mum." Emily gave her a comforting look, signalling for her to rest assured.
"Hurry up." Mason said impatiently. He was afraid that Emily would change her mind at the last moment and even gave her a push.
Mason just couldn't muster up any fondness for Emily, and neither could she.
The past 8 years had been more than enough to make their kinship run its course.
Mason brought Emily to a high-class boutique to buy her something to wear. To him, she was much too underdressed to meet the Clay family.
When they entered the boutique, a sales clerk came over to serve them. Mason pushed Emily forward and said simply, "Get her something that she can wear."
The sales clerk gave Emily a once-over and got an idea of her size, then said, "Come with me, please."
The sales clerk got a long, pale blue dress and handed it to Emily. "Here, try this."
Emily took it from her and headed towards the fitting room.
"Dylan, do you really have to marry that woman from the Davis family?" Suddenly, a woman's voice rang out. She sounded wronged.
Emily looked in the direction of the voice. Through a door that was ajar, she saw a woman with her arms around a man's neck. She was saying coquettishly, "Don't marry another woman, okay?"
Dylan Clay looked at her, seemingly a little helpless. This was a marriage that his mother had decided on for him. He couldn't go back on her promise.
However, when he thought of that night, he couldn't bear to let her down. "That night, did it really hurt?"
More than a month ago, he'd gone to a rundown country to oversee a project and had ended up getting bitten by a venomous snake. As a result, he'd had to get a woman to relieve himself, or he'd die from the lust caused by the venom.
Brianna Rose was the one who'd saved him.
Dylan knew just how out of control he'd been.
Everyone said that a woman's first time hurt like hell, and he hadn't held back at all. God knew how much pain she'd been in.
Yet she'd gritted her teeth and bore through the pain, not even letting out a single sound. All she'd done was tremble in his arms.
Dylan had always known that Brianna liked him, but he'd never given her a chance.
Firstly, he didn't love her. Secondly, his mother had already decided on a wife for him.
However, she'd been by his side for such a long time, silently supporting him. Since that night, he'd felt that he should take responsibility for her.
Even now, he still remembered vividly the blood that had been on the sheets.
Brianna leaned against his chest with her eyes lowered and hummed shyly.
She loved Dylan. She'd spent all these years by his side as his secretary, but she'd long since lost her virginity. However, there was no way she could let Dylan find out about that because she knew how much something like that mattered to a man. That was why she'd hired someone to send a virgin to Dylan's room that night.
Once the girl had left, Brianna had gone in and tricked Dylan into thinking that he'd slept with her.
"If you like the clothes here, you should pick out some more." Dylan caressed Brianna's head dotingly.
"That's the VIP fitting room, so you can't go in there. Go to the one on the right." the sales clerk said to Emily.
At such a high-class boutique, the fitting rooms were all independent of each other, and the VIP fitting room was even more luxurious. It was more like a suite, with a private fitting room and a lounge where friends and family could wait and rest.
"Oh, okay." Emily headed towards the fitting room on the right.
While Emily was changing, she kept thinking about the couple that she'd seen. They seemed to have mentioned the Davis family in their conversation.
Could it be that man was...
