I walked into the diner at 12:30 a half hour to early, good impressions are everything.
"You're on time, I expected you too be late. Here is your uniform; if you pass today I’ll give you your other ones. We have a dressing room right through that door, you'll need white toms in the future." She handed me the dress and I left. It's a light blue straight dress with a square neckline and white ribbing around the edge of the short sleeves. It also comes with a white apron that I tied around my waist. I listened for anyone and when I was sure no one was close I thought of white toms making them appear on the chair close to me. I couldn't work in my uggs. I’m ready to work.
"I’m glad it fits, I had to guess your size."
"It fits just fine."
"Okay, here is the menu, try and memorize it if you get the job. Our specials are written on the black board at the entrance and next to the counter, you should know it."
"Do you have any experience?"
"No, but I’m a fast learner."
"Don't be too friendly with the customers, smile, greet them, tell them the specials and ask if you can get them something while they decide."
"Got it."
"Great, impress me." I gave her a smile as she handed me a blue pen and notebook. I looked through the menu making it appear in my mind. Now I won't forget it. Time to get to work. I saw a table with an old couple and walked over.
"Good afternoon, I’ll be your waitress today." I handed them a menu smiling politely.
"Our special today is the mega sandwich, which is a combination of any three sandwiches of your choice."
"Can I get you anything while you decide on your order?"
"Two cups of coffee, please." I wrote it down and left getting two cups of coffee, placing it on a tray with the milk and sugar. I walked over to the table and served them their coffee.
"Are you ready to order?"
"Yes, can we get two fruit salads, with two cups of blueberry yogurt."
"Is that all?"
"Yes, thank you." I walked over to the window and clipped my order on the wire.
"Are you enjoying working it?" The guy behind the window asked me.
"You mean working?"
"No, you make heads turn baby doll."
"Thanks?"
"What's your order, you should tell me as you clip it."
"Two fruit salads and two cups of blueberry yogurt."
"5 minutes doll." He is very weird, but I’m fine with it, he isn't close to the twins.
"New girl go and clean table two, three and four!" The one waitress yelled at me while juggling plates of food. At least I know the trick with stacking many plates in my hands and on my arms in order to avoid them from falling. Cleaning up was a piece of cake. I took the dishes to the back.
"Doll you need to hurry your tables are full."
"My tables?"
"One - four."
"Got it." I left the kitchen, as I stepped out of the hall I looked at the tables, and quickly stepped back into the hall.
"Is there a problem?" The lady that hired me asked.
"Uhm, no not really, do I have to serve table 1 - 4." She looked out at the tables.
"Do you have a problem with them?"
"No, they attend the same school as me, they have a problem with me."
"If you can't serve them, you can't work here. They are some of our best customers, they are here every afternoon, sometimes in the morning as well."
"No it's fine."
"Big smiles, those compound kids are the main reason we are running." Great, deep breaths. I walked out, took the menus and headed to them.
"Good afternoon, I’ll be your waitress today." I handed them the menu, Owen was already staring at me, but the rest of the group lifted their heads only after I handed them the menus.
"Wait you're the girl that kicked Owen's ass today." Ryder, Hope’s brother started laughing.
"Our special today is the mega sandwich, which is where you can combine any three sandwiches of your choice." I continued with my speech, ignoring them best I could.
"Aww shame the new girl has to work, what does your parents not love you enough to give you money or do you have to work just so that they don't have to look at your ugly face?"
"Is there anything I can get for you while you decide on what you're going to eat?"
"Four cream sodas, five cokes, three strawberry milkshakes, one chocolate and two vanillas." Owen said looking right at me, it was way too intense, what is wrong with him? His girlfriend is sitting right next to him.
"Okay." I looked over the three tables and noticed Hope, Zoe and Mya. I gave the order and within minutes all the drinks were ready.
"Fast service."
"Best clients."
"Of course."
"Cream soda's?" Ryder, colt, Daphne and some other girl lifted their hands.
"Cokes." Owen, Nathan, Daxton and two other girls lifted their hands.
"Strawberry?"
"Over here love." Finally I walked over to the table where Hope, Zoe and Mya were sitting.
"Do you know the concept of a fair warning." The twins said.
"Not psychic." I mutter back at them.
"Hello waiting for a drink over here!!" I get why the twins hate her.
"We are the vanilla." The one guy sitting with the twins said. I gave them their milkshakes and walked over to Owens table. I took the chocolate milkshake and handed it too Valeri. She looked at me as she pushed it of the table.
"Oops clumsy me."
"It's okay, accidents happen." I went to grab a cloth. I bend down and started picking up the glass.
"Let me help you." I looked up just in time to see Owen bending down in front of me.
"It’s fine, it my job."
"The b***h is my girlfriend."
"Owen I swear if you help her today!" Valeri screeched from the both
"Valeri, don't start."
"Owen!" I wish he could stop, because her nagging is annoying, on the other hand I want him to continue helping me in order to irritate her.
"I’ll throw the glass away, I’m afraid you'll cut yourself." I just let him do it, clearly arguing with him doesn't work and it clearly irritates Valeri even more that he was afraid that I would get hurt. I wiped the floor and went to the back where Owen was waiting for me.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes I’m fine, one girl won't break me."
"I meant your arm, I’m sorry I shouldn't have grabbed you like that."
"Don't worry I’m a big girl."
"I’m serious the last thing I wanted to do was hurt you."
"Owen I need to get back to work."
"I just wanted to get to know you."
"There isn't anything worth knowing. Like I said early on, leave me alone and pay attention to your girlfriend."
"Can I get a new chocolate milkshake?"
"Sapphire I..."
"Sure doll face."
"You don't call her that!" Owen basically growled at the poor guy.
"He can call me what he wants, you don't have a say! You aren't allowed in the kitchen!" Owen was still staring at him.
"Owen, leave!" He looked at me before storming out of the kitchen.
"I’m sorry."
"Your boyfriend has a temper."
"He is not my boyfriend, he isn't even my friend."
"Here you go one warm chocolate milkshake."
"Thanks." I walked back out and gave Valeri her warm milkshake.
"Do you have any siblings?" Owen asked me, right there in front of everyone, who were waiting to order.
"No."
"You parents probably stopped trying after they saw your face." Valeri said nonchalantly, looking at me through her lashes.
"So are you ready to order?"
"Yes." Owen answered, his whole mood sour again.
"Get me four sweet chilli chicken large pizzas for all of us and then I want two bacon and mushroom burgers with fries and a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich."
"I want the chicken salad and an ‘all in burger’ with potato wedges on the side." Valeri ordered.
"Okay give me scrambled eggs with a mega sandwich, I want it to be ham and cheese, turkey and bacon and egg. Then I want a plate of fries and a fruit salad." Nathan mumbled not looking up from the menu.
"I’m going to make it simple. I want four ‘all in burgers’ and two beef fillets with mushroom sauce and my girl will have the same as Valeri." Daxton ordered. The orders kept coming, I’ve never seen people order so much in my life.
"Order of the year!" I said as I got to the kitchen window, repeating the order to him.
"Are they really going to eat all of that or are they going dine and dash leaving me with the bill?"
"Nah they always order this much. They eat more than what most people eat in one week here. The compound has a tab. Every end of the week we get paid, by Owen's parents. Of course all of their parent pitch in."
"What is this compound you all talk about?"
"You're so new it's cute. The compound is at the end of town. It's basically a village on its own, you have to apply to stay there. I won't know what it's like since I don't live there but all of them do. It sounds nice though, they all have their own apartments, while their parents stay in their own houses."
"Sounds different." After a while I took the pizza's over and then I got their food to them as it was cooked. They were there until four, which was when they were finally done eating. I cleared their tables taking the dishes too the kitchen.
"I’m amazed! I’ve never seen anyone eat that much." I told the guy as I put the dishes down.
"Now you get why they are our best customers."
"Do you need some help with the dishes?"
"That would be great!"
"We are usually four guys working in the kitchen, but the other all have the flue or something. My best guess is a hangovers. Some people just can't handle their alcohol."
"I’m Tristan by the way."
"Sorry, I’m Sapphire."
"Great name." I started doing the dishes while Tristan prepared meals for the other tables.
"So Owen wants your meat?"
"Owen doesn't know what he wants, I’ve made it clear that I’m not interested."
"What he doesn't do it for you?" He shocked since Owen is obviously hot and most likely drooled over by many girls.
"I’m just not interested in dating at all."
"You should tell that to Valeri it would sure get her off your case."
"You seem to know them?"
"I went to the same school as them."
"Oh..."
"You can ask me you know?"
"Ask you what?"
"To tell you about them."
"I don't... I wasn't."
"Wow convincing."
"Fine I’m a bit curious about the whole compound thing."
"About half of the town stays there. They aren't isolated or anything, but I won't lie and say that I’m not curious about all the things that happens beyond those walls, but only they know. It's called 'solace des mondes' which is German for solace of the moon, yeah I googled it."
"I’m not sure when the kids start to join us at school, but when I was 17, Owen, Nathan, Daxton, Valeri, Ryder, Daphne and Emma joined. Those are the only names I knew since as you've probably seen they are that crowd. I mean they were 14 but they had high school dialed in. They were popular by the first period. Probably because half of the school is from the compound and the other half saw how the others acted around them, people treat them with such respect."
"The next year Hope, Zoe, Mya, Dawn, Colt and Nicole joined. They were also in tune but Hope distanced herself from the group and a while later so did Zoe and Mya. They always did what they wanted anyhow."
"You know them?"
"Yeah I was one of their one day guys. Owen almost combusted when he found out."
"I don't know the two other boys that well, they came in the year after I left. They are also twins, colt's brothers. They are only part of that crowd because of who their brother is, just like hope, Zoe and Mya, except the girls made a name for themselves."
"I don't understand?" It’s a bit confusing, if I’m popular that doesn’t mean that my sisters will automatically be popular to.
"Something to do with the compounds important families. As far as I know it's the Xandros family, the Pearce family, the Henderson's, Arrington and the Dawson's."
"It all sounds pretty complicated and boring, why would you want to know so much." It's weird they are only popular because of their family status and whoever is close to them. Just like back home. Drake was only important because he was close to my family and a pureblood, not because he was special. That's how it is in life. You are as important as the people around you, you are who you're with... What other saying is also in play here cool by association, you are what you eat and so on and so forth.
"Information is like money in this town, you need it, to get anything."
"I get it knowledge is power."
"And power is needed throughout life."
"I can't believe you work at the diner, if you wanted to stay away from Owen congrats you accomplished the complete opposite." Zoe said with an eye roll.
"Like I could have possibly known that, how was I supposed to know that it is his favourite hangout?”
“It’s Tristan’s fault he just makes food to die for.” Mya said with a dreamy look on her face.
“I’ll just ignore him and your sister because I really like and need that job.”
“If you need money you can borrow from us.” Zoe threw out casually.
“I don’t need money, I have more than enough. I work to pass time.”
“Hope is waiting at the motel let’s get going.”
“Hey what are all you girls up too?” Tristan asked, popping out of nowhere.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” Mya said.
“How courageous of you Tristan? Taking on three girls at once.” Zoe taunted
“What can I say I live for the chase.”
“They are helping me move to my new place.” I said to stop the flirty conversation. No matter what it always leans that way with the twins.
“At night? It might be dangerous, do you want me to help?”
“Sure why not.” I’m tired of fending people of, let them come and see what they want to see so that they can get over this curiosity, that is my life.
“Dangerous please, this is the safest town ever, people here don’t even think about committing crimes.” The twins said.
“No place can be that safe.” if only there was such a safe place where Drake couldn’t find me.
“No really, thanks to the towns legend.” Tristan said smiling at me.
“It is said that there is a wolf spirit watching over the town.” Zoe started to explain.
“And if someone disturbs the towns peace, they are never seen again, all that’s left of them is the blood trails that lead into the forest.” The black wolf from yesterday was the image that popped in my mind. Did the people really make up a story of a wolf that kills the bad to scare people?
“You guys can’t truly believe that.”
“Not all legends are made up you know, there has really been wolf attacks here.”
“I do believe that part, I saw a wolf in the forest yesterday.”
“You were in the forest?” Zoe and Mya said together.
“Yes after lunch until late at night, I fell asleep on the grass in the sun, it was so nice.”
“You really shouldn’t do that.” All three of them said at once.
“Hope is waiting for us.” That is what I get for opening up to them.
“Sorry we took so long we were talking about the legend of the town.” I said as we got out of the car. She was standing against her car waiting for us.
“Yeah our dear friend saw a wolf yesterday.” Zoe remarked getting out of the car, followed by Mya.
“Best guess is a big black one!” She said.
“How accurate is her guess?” Hope asked me.
“What? Are Black wolves common?”
“No they are rare.”
“I’ll just go and unlock, we’ll have to walk in a line since the stairs are very narrow and there isn’t an elevator.”
“You and Tristan go ahead, I brought some boxes, the twins can help me carry them.”
“Okay.” As I was walking up the stairs I glanced back to see if they were following us yet, but they just seemed to be in an intense conversation.
“I can’t believe you’ve been staying in a dump like this.”
“I’ve stayed in worse.” Since I’ve been running I have gone through all sorts of places, sometimes I would drive in circle to confuse my scent. I’ve been working on a spell that changes my scent, but so far it hasn’t been working, but I’ll keep trying. Analize didn’t become so powerful overnight.
“Earth to Sapphire?”
“Yeah?”
“You zoned out.”
“Sorry, I guess I’m just tired. Here we are.” I unlocked the door just as the twins showed up behind us carrying a lot of boxes.
“Be a gentleman and let us go in first, you can wait for Hope, she is carrying a lot more than us.” Poor guy, I can’t imagine him with the two of them, he comes off so innocent and they, well they come off as very dangerous seducers. They are odd as well, but they keep getting odder and something is up, they have been acting suspiciously tonight. I’ll just check and see if I’m not being silly. I ran my finger slightly all along the edge of ear. My hearing is sensitive, but not as sensitive as a vampires, but I found a spell that enhances my sense, by a simple touch. I activate it at night, before I fall asleep, in order to be more alert.
“What are you doing Tristan?”
“I’m waiting for you...the twins...”
“No with Sapphire, I know you know that Owen has his eyes on her.”
“And Owen always gets what he wants right, all of the compound brats do. I just never saw you or the twins as his merry little followers.”
“It’s not like that...I’m just warning you, you don’t want to be on his bad side.”
“You mean Shadows side, I’ve heard you guys talk about Shadow.”
“Especially not Shadows... Tristan this isn’t... Sapphire isn’t something he is going to let go of that easily, it’s not some game to him and if you turn it into a game it’s going to be a dangerous one.”
“I just want to be her friend, I’m not interested in dating her.”
“Good.” So all this was about Owen again.
“Here are some more boxes.” Hope said as she came walking in.
“So where do we start?”
“Like I said I don’t have a lot of things, it’s my toiletries and my clothes.”
“No personal objects? Photos or books from your old school?”
“Nope, I travel light.”
“These boxes were a complete waste of time then, do you have a travel bag for your clothes?”
“Most of my clothes are still in the travel bag I just took out a few outfits for this week.”
“You’re disappointing as a girl.” Zoe exclaimed as she walked into my bathroom with one box.
“Yeah this is boring!” Mya agreed.
“I did warn you guys!” Tristan basically just sat on the bed while we packed since he couldn’t exactly pack my clothes or my girly toiletries. I wanted him to come along since I need a friend of sorts in the work place and being alone with the twins in a car at night doesn’t seem all that stable or smart. After packing we all got back into the cars and headed to my new place. I felt so nervous, I only now realized that I don’t even know exactly where the boarding house was or how it looked or even how much space I will have. That’s when all the other questions started to run through my mind, it was giving me a headache, but it was at the exact moment the car stopped, Zoe was driving since I didn’t know where the entrance was.
“Are you kidding me! This is why you didn’t want me to know!” Hope freaked out when she reached us.
“Even I know this is a bad idea!” Tristan joined in on Hope’s outrage.
“It’s close to the school and to my job.”
“You helped them? Do you know who owns this place?”
“Yes, but he doesn’t know that I’m moving in.”
“It’s an all guy boarding house! He is going to go crazy.” Tristan lost it completely, yelling at the top of his voice. The light inside the boarding house went on and the front door opened, guys pilled out of it and stared at us.
“Now you’ve done it!” I scolded Tristan.
“Who are you?” The one guy asked rudely.
“Hi I’m moving in, see here is my key.”
“Most of the guys are already sleeping, you shouldn’t make too much noise.”
“Okay.” Everyone went back inside and I took a good look at the place. It looked like a cottage house, double story with shutter windows. It was nice, a lot better than the motel. Tristan carried my bags while hope carried my one box. We made our way to my room. It was a plain room with a bed and a closet, not anything special just ordinary. Exactly what I needed. The girls didn’t stay long something about a curfew, they gave Tristan a lift back to the diner where he had left his car. I quickly unpacked my clothes and got in bed. It was near midnight and I knew I would be tossing and turning for an hour before I would finally fall asleep.
Hope POV
“You two have done it now, not even our status as part of the big five can save us now. If he finds her there we are dead”
“He won’t find her relax Hope!”
“You got her a room in the rogue initiation pack house, how do you expect me to relax.”
