Chapter 7: Fortress of Shadows
The trio’s journey to the dark fortress was a grueling one. The closer they got, the colder and darker the air became. Even the sun seemed hesitant to shine on the ominous structure.
“I’m starting to think this place isn’t on the tourist map,” Shu quipped, trying to lighten the mood.
“Stay focused,” Lian Hua warned. “This isn’t the time for jokes.”
The fortress gates loomed ahead, carved with grotesque faces frozen in expressions of agony. Wen Zhao examined the runes etched into the stone.
“These are ancient bindings,” he explained. “The fortress is warded against intruders. Only someone with divine blood can pass.”
Shu stepped forward, his rune glowing faintly. As he touched the gate, the faces on the doors twisted into mocking grins.
“Well, that’s not creepy at all,” Shu muttered.
The gate opened with a loud groan, revealing a shadowy interior. As they entered, the temperature dropped further, and a chilling voice echoed through the halls.
“Welcome, Heir of the World God. Your reckoning awaits.”

Chapter 8: The Trials of Doubt
The fortress was a labyrinth of twisting corridors and shifting walls. Each step seemed to lead them in circles, and an oppressive weight pressed down on them.
“This place is playing with our minds,” Lian Hua said, her voice tight with tension.
Suddenly, a wall shifted, separating Shu from the others.
“Shu!” Lian Hua shouted, but her voice was muffled as the walls sealed shut.
Shu found himself alone in a dimly lit chamber. A mirror stood in the center, its surface rippling like water. As he approached, his reflection stepped out of the mirror, grinning smugly.
“Well, well,” the reflection said. “The unluckiest boy alive, trying to play hero. How adorable.”
“Great,” Shu muttered. “I have to fight myself. That’s new.”
The reflection laughed. “Fight? No. I’m here to remind you of the truth—you’re not a hero. You’re a walking disaster. Your friends don’t trust you. They pity you.”
Shu clenched his fists. “You’re wrong. They’re my friends.”
“Are they?” the reflection sneered. “Or are they just waiting for you to mess up again?”
The rune on Shu’s hand flared, and he stepped forward. “I’ve made mistakes, sure. But I’m still standing. And if I’m such a disaster, why are you so afraid of me?”
The reflection’s grin faltered. With a burst of light from Shu’s rune, the mirror shattered, and the illusion faded.
On the other side of the wall, Lian Hua and Wen Zhao were facing their own trials—Lian Hua battling shadowy versions of her past failures and Wen Zhao deciphering an impossible puzzle.
When the walls finally shifted again, the trio reunited, each looking a little shaken but resolute.
“This fortress is testing us,” Wen Zhao said. “It’s trying to break us.”
“Well, it’s going to have to try harder,” Shu said, determination burning in his eyes.
With newfound resolve, they pressed deeper into the fortress, unaware of the greater challenges that awaited them.
