She sits crosslegged on the floor in a small dark cabin, wondering why her family has left her alone in such a gloomy place.
They should be here any minute now, if not, she will go insane. She's been sitting here for hours.
Waiting for her family to come back, as they promised.
The sound of heavy footsteps approaching makes her raise her head quickly.
Finally.
The door is pushed open with brutal force, causing her to spring up to her feet, staring at the newcomer.
It is not anyone from her family, she can tell even though the only thing she can make out of the person is his dark outline.
He is a big man dressed in all black from head to toe, with a hoodie over his head covering most of his face.
"Where... where is my sister? My parents?" she asks, wearing a confused expression on her face.
"They've gone home without you," the stranger says, his voice so low it raises goosebumps on her skin. "Because, Lucea, you are no longer a part of their home. You have your own home now. About time you started your own family, don't you think? With me. They've sold you to me!"
"Are you high or something? I want to see my family, now!" she demands, outraged.
But the stranger only chuckles, then drops the hoodie from his head exposing his face.
He has strange silver eyes that look almost demonic, and Lucea turns around to flee, only to be met with a priest holding a wedding band on a tray, a sinister smile on his face.
"Sold. You've been sold. Your parents want you to marry this man...you are of age now..."
A resounding slap on her cheek makes her eyes fly open.
"Wake up! who starts dreaming when they are supposed to be packing?"
Luces rubs her eyes and heaves a long sigh, staring back at her younger sister who just woke her from her sleep with a slap.
It was just a dream.
Thank goodness!
It takes a moment to calm her frantically beating heart enough to ask,
"Was it necessary to wake me like that, Ruth? Don't try it again next time," she says, her tone full of warning.
She grabs the novel she was reading before she dozed off, at the same time as the door to the room opens.
"Have you packed everything, girls?" Beatrice asks as she enters her daughters' room.
Up until now, Lucea and Ruth shared the same room since the house they've been living in from birth till now is a two-bedroom house.
For the longest time, they have been told they don't belong here, and now the day has come when they have to move to their 'pack' where better living conditions await them. Each of them will finally have her own room, they are told, and the sisters greet this information with excitement, especially Lucea, who likes her space.
Since childhood, the girls have been told by their parents that they are werewolves and that someday, they will shift for the first time into their wolves. Lucea, being a bookworm, had read about werewolves and thinks they are fascinating creatures.
She looks forward to having her wolf, to knowing what it feels like to be able to turn into your animal side at will.
She has seen her parents do that a few times, and she had been more than impressed every single time.
Right now, the only unusual thing she noticed about herself is her extra sensitivity to sound and smell.
She and her young sister noticed they hear and smell things that are undetectable to other kids at school , and after telling this to their mother, they were told that wolves have far better hearing, sense of smell, and speed than humans, which solved the mystery.
They have also heard many tales of their parents' lives in their pack, one of them being about how their parents were thrown out of their pack when their mother had been pregnant with Lucea.
Lucea swears she is going to deal with the Alpha who drove her parents out of the pack when they needed to be home the most.
They have eagerly waited for this day to come for a long time.
And recently, a letter sealed with the official stamp of the Bright Moon pack had arrived for them, signed by a Mr. Roderic Porter.
Let's just say the family had cause for celebration that night.
They might have been thrown out of the pack, but the fact is that they were never declared rogues and therefore remain bonded to it, and living away from their fellow wolves had been torture at best. But that's the whole point of exiling a werewolf, really.
Between exile and being declared as Rogues, the line is very blurry.
The moving truck has already moved almost all of their furniture to the pack. Only a few boxes remain containing shoes, books, and silverware that will easily fit in the only car the family owns and which they are going to use to travel to the pack.
"Almost done," Ruth replies to her mother's question, giving Lucea a sharp glance and then looking around the room and gathering all stray shoes together with her feet. "We'd have finished ages ago had it not been for Lucea leaving the rest of the packing to me while she reads her novel and dreams," she adds darkly.
"Hurry up, your father is already in the car, waiting for us. Lucea, close that book and get moving."
Lucea picks a shoelace from the floor and uses it to mark the page she is reading before putting the book in the box with a sigh.
Standing up, she carries one of the three boxes in the room and takes it outside to the car, where her father has already started the engine. Her mother and sister soon follow with the two boxes, putting them in the car.
When they have all settled, the girls take a final look at the old building that had been their home for years as the car drives away.
"Are you going to miss the place, girls?" James asks his children, noticing them twisting their necks for a final look.
"I will miss it very much, especially my friends at school." Ruth looks sadly in the direction the school is located.
"What about you, Lucea?"
Lucea, who is about to bury herself in her novel again, looks up at her father in the driver's seat and says,
" It depends on where we are going. If I find the place and the people horrible, I will have reason to miss our home. If we are welcomed warmly and find nice people, I won't miss it at all, especially since I am so excited about the idea of living among other wolves. " Her response makes James's smile falter on his lips, then he continues to smile. His firstborn child has always fascinated him. Her way of thinking is far more advanced than most kids her age, and she is sassy and lively compared to her younger sister, who is quiet and shy, especially when around people she doesn't know. Ruth took after her mother. James smiles as he remembers what a hard time he had trying to break away her shyness when they first became mates. But Lucea clearly takes after him. She is never afraid to speak her mind or to stand up for herself and the people she loves when threatened. She is quite some wolf. James hopes Alpha Sydney has changed through the years, afraid that if the Alpha still behaves the way he remembers, Lucea will constantly get in trouble. She is a very kind and considerate girl, but she has this habit of treating people according to how she thinks they deserve, and in Alpha Sydney's case, unfortunately, he deserves sh*t.
And James can see Lucea giving him exactly that.
"What about you, Dad, are you going to miss this place?" Lucea interrupts James's thoughts.
" I wish I could say I will miss it. It's been our home for many years but I have always missed the pack. I have always wished I could go back. Especially when the full moon approached and we needed to howl to the goddess. Your mother and I always thought that humans would hear and wonder what was happening. We were never able to train properly, too. We would scare people with our strength and speed, leading them to be suspicious of us. We are surely going to be the weakest wolves in the whole pack."
Lucea giggles at that.
"And mom?" she asks, shifting her gaze to her, seated in the passenger seat beside her mate.
"Well, for me everything is okay. I was happy living here, I will be equally happy to live that side," Beatrice responds.
"Okay!" Lucea sighs, leaning back against the car seat.
"So, how far away from here is the pack?"
"Two days' worth of traveling, at least."
"What?! I thought it was only hours away." Lucea's eyes go wide with surprise. "I've never been that far in my life. We are up for a boring ride."
"Are you really interested in seeing the rightful place for you to be?" James concentrates on the road now, as it is bumpy and full of potholes.
"Of course I am but still, that is a long distance. I wish someone had some kind of superpower to move us there within minutes! I've found out I don't like reading in the car. No one is going to enjoy the ride, especially with such a bumpy road," she complains.
"Here, take this and drink, you will feel relaxed." James has added sleeping pills to a cup of coffee and hands it to Lucea. Lucea drinks it for a moment, then she begins to feel drowsy. After a few minutes, her head lolls to one side. She is in a deep sleep.
Disturbingly, she goes back to continue the dream about the strange man claiming her parents have sold her to him.
*
When Lucea wakes up, she is lying on her bed. Only this time it is in a different room, a more spacious and beautiful room than the one she and her sister shared in their previous house. She is starving and has a slight headache.
'Did I sleep through the whole journey?' she wonders as she climbs out of bed. It seems she is already at the new place but she doesn't remember how she got here. 'surely Dad can't make me sleep more than two days, without eating. He said the trip would last more than two days but here I am, already at the place and with an empty stomach. It would be cruel of him if he made me sleep through the whole journey.'
She puts on her slippers that she finds laid out on the floor and is about to open the door when it swings inward on its own. Lucea steps back and stares before she sees a beautiful brunette standing outside the room. She is a teenage girl probably the same age as herself.
"Uum.... Hi there. I am Mia," the girl says. She looks nervous like she came to this room by accident. She reminds Lucea of her younger sister who is also shy and nervous around strangers. Lucea gazes at her with an interested look on her face. It seems the look makes the girl more nervous as she twirls her long hair and says,
"I am sorry for disturbing you. I've been helping your parents and sister unpack their things and I thought of checking if you are awake. We saw your dad carry you inside and put you to bed and wondered what happened to you. I will be off now to continue unpacking." She turns around to leave but Lucea calls her back.
"Wait! Please, come inside."
Seeing that the other girl is friendly after all, Mia relaxes and smiles a little as she enters the room. She has liked Lucea from the moment she saw her, feeling drawn to her as though by some kind of magnet. Which is strange.
"How many people saw my father carry me?" Lucea asks, a look of horror on her face. Mia almost smiles. She is worried about that.
"Everyone who was outside the pack house when you arrived."
"And how many is that everyone?" Lucea presses on.
"Don't worry. Just a few kids and some adults. No one thought it was funny. On the contrary, we all were worried that you were not feeling well. Then your sister assured us you were fine, just asleep."
Lucea sighs in relief. She smoothes her hair back and wipes the corner of her eyes with her fingertips, getting rid of any evidence of sleep. "Okay! My name is Lucea. Thanks for worrying about me, a stranger."
"I can't say you are a stranger. At least, your father and mother aren't strangers here. We all know the story of how the bravest couple in our pack had been driven out by the late Alpha of this pack, Alpha Sydney. Everyone thought it was cruel of him and have been waiting for you eagerly when we heard you were coming back."
"Did you say the Alpha died?" Lucea doesn't like this. How dare he die before she had the chance to deal with him?
"Yes. He died when I was about five. No one knew what killed him, he was just found dead in his bed."
She nods with a frown. "That's sad. So now the pack has no Alpha? I heard the Alpha was unable to have children, that's why he was bitter?"
"He had a son. Your parents left while your mother was pregnant and they left the Luna pregnant too."
"What?" Lucea's mom was eavesdropping at the door. She is now surprised at this news that she decides to reveal herself. Lucea and Mia glance at each other, but now Mia has already turned on her shy button.
"Nothing. I was just telling her a tale." She drops her gaze to the floor.
"I have a lot of work to do on you, Mia. Don't be this shy. Don't you get bullied at school for being like that?" Lucea says.
"Lucea! don't talk to your friend like that! Where are your manners?" her mother scolds. "Come, dear girl. Tell me what happened after we left for I am more interested than your friend here." Lucea glares at her mother, but adds,
"Go on, Mia. My mom is chilled, you can feel free to talk around her."
Mia clears her throat. She looks between Lucea and her mother before continuing,
"Well, I wasn't yet born when you left but as soon as any kid here is old enough to understand human language, we all hear about you. The story is, you were exiled because you rescued a criminal. That you flew around everyone's heads and called for all to watch you as you took that girl out of the dungeons without unlocking the door. That you took the criminal to safety, then came back to challenge the Alpha, daring him to do anything and have his head blown off."
"We probably failed to blow his head off, that's why we left, right?" Beatrice can't believe how their story has evolved.
"Of course, most of us never believed this. We never believed that you really insulted the Alpha. And I am going to be the first to let you know that most of us were eager to welcome you back here."
"Aww, thanks! Can you tell us more? About the Alpha and his secret baby?"
"Sure. The Luna was hiding because she was pregnant. The Alpha never wanted to expose the pregnancy to a lot of people. He thought someone might bewitch the child, from what I heard. He'd lost many unborn children for many years that he started becoming paranoid. Luckily, the child was born just a few months before I was born. When he was six, both his parent's died within two days. He became the youngest Alpha ever known in history."
