Chapter Eight Stan’s training had been off-kilter all day. Each time he sent a signal for Bertram, and he wasn’t there, it was as strange as his missing limb. The other dogs didn’t notice and he was finally able to suppress the additional signal. But it didn’t make him feel any more normal. His neck actually hurt from the number of times he’d craned it around to look for any sign of his dog’s return. When Bertram finally came back, he missed it. One moment he wasn’t there, and the next moment he was. A glance up and he spotted Jodie walking back toward the kennel. Again, walking away from him. Before he could think, he sliced a hand in her direction, “Bringen.” Retrieve. Bertram shifted from sitting facing him to sprinting away at full speed in a single twist of pure power. His spri
