(Elodie)
That freaking jerk. I mean, who does he think he is? He comes in here, acts all sexy and cool, and doesn't think I won't catch on?!
Yeah, he isn't fooling anyone.
Okay, granted we did have an agreement to do this together, but doesn't he think what we did last night is going a little too far? I understand he might not think it's a big deal, but that type of stuff is completely new to me. And all this talk about that kiss being real.
Bullshit.
I couldn't help but scoff as I buttoned up my jeans before slipping on my oversized white t-shirt. There was no point in trying to look cute. I'm sure once Ari gets here Beckett's attention will be completely elsewhere.
That's when I suddenly looked over, catching the dark blue hoodie hanging off of my dresser as I stomped over and grabbed it.
Then I went to my ear next and decided to slip it on. I needed to hear his voice for this one. That way I can tell if he is lying or not even more. Why does he have to be so damn hard to read?
The moment I flicked my ear on, I was surprised to hear the sound of music playing from the other room. It was a song I recognized by the band Cheap Trick. My dad had their record when I was growing up and would blast it on the weekends when he would make dinner.
That's when I heard another sound.
Beckett, was he singing?
"I want you to want me!" He belted out, making me slap my hand over my mouth as I fought back the sudden urge to laugh.
Okay, maybe he wasn't very good at it, but he was putting everything he had into those lyrics.
I felt my stomach start to flutter as I stepped closer to the door before peering around it, trying to be stealthy.
That's when I saw Beckett standing in front of the stove. He had on one of Ari's pink frilly aprons and was using a wooden spatula as his microphone.
I swear my jaw practically dropped to the floor.
Was this some type of fever dream or something?!
I couldn't help but gawk as Beckett c****d his hip before turning and pointing straight at me while yelling out the lyrics.
"I'd love you to love me!" He continued, and I know it was just how the song goes, but the way he was looking at me was enough to make me forget all about why I was even angry with him.
Beckett flipped back around, continuing to cook what I was guessing had to be pancakes as I slowly stepped towards him, gripping the hoodie tighter in my hands.
"Wow, she even looks adorable in a f*****g t-shirt." I heard him say to himself, making me pause as I looked towards him curiously.
"I bet you would look even better in mine!" He added, and then I remembered, he thought I didn't have my ear in! Was he seriously saying this stuff thinking I wouldn't know? I mean, I guess I wouldn't if I decided to go without my ear.
I casually walked to the table, wondering what he would say next as I turned my head slightly, trying to hide my ear the best I could. That's when my gaze settled on his muscular back.
The way he was only wearing an apron without a shirt had to be one of the hottest things I had ever seen. But I wouldn't let him know that.
"What are you making?" I asked, trying to act casual.
That's when Beckett turned slightly so I could read his lips.
"Pancakes." He mouthed and turned back to the stove.
"Those are your favorite after all." He added, making my eyes widen. How did he know that?
"Actually, I think I prefer waffles more." I lied, hoping the pancake gods forgive me.
I watched as Beckett froze, his body stiffening as he seemed to be considering what to say next.
"You decided to put your ear in. Why?" He asked, not even bothering to turn around.
"I just felt like it." I lied again, looking down in my lap now as Beckett clicked off the stove before turning around.
"Sunshine, has anyone ever told you that you’re a horrible liar?" He asked and of course people have... I just make sure not to lie.
"I could say the same to you." I rushed out, getting defensive as I continued playing with the hoodie in my hands, trying to stay confident.
"Why do you have that?" Beckett asked, looking down at his hoodie now as I sat back before meeting Beckett's icy gaze.
"I wanted to return it."
Crap, that might not have been a good idea.
I watched as Beckett clenched his jaw, making it tick before turning and placing the spatula down.
"Now why the f**k would you want to do that?" He asked, now stalking towards me as I tried not to shrink back into my chair.
We were going to address this. I was done being dragged along and kept in the dark. Granted it's barely been over a week since we started this whole thing, but after last night, I don't think I wanted to do this anymore.
"I just think we should end this now before someone gets hurt." I blurted, seeing Beckett stop for a moment as his eyebrow arched in response.
"Before someone gets hurt, huh? And who would that someone be Sunshine?" Beckett asked, making my lips part as the sound of my racing heart started to fill my ears, making that anxiety start to rise.
I felt like my words were lodged in my throat, the reality of this whole situation finally set in and I knew I couldn't do this again. I couldn't be some girl pining after another guy that will never want her. I would be a complete i***t if I did that, right? So how the hell did I end up in this same exact situation... again.
"Elodie, answer me." Beckett stated loudly, the abrupt tone of his voice causing me to jump.
"Who would get hurt in this situation?" He asked again, coming too close now as he placed one hand on the table, and the other on the back of my chair, finding yet another way to cage me in.
I looked up at his face pleadingly, begging him not to make me say this as I know once I do, all of this really would mean something more. It really wasn't pretend any longer...
"Me, Beckett, I'm the one who will get hurt." I whispered the words, seeing some type of emotion I couldn't place fill his eyes.
"So please, let's just end this now. I mean, it obviously didn't work and I'm pretty sure I don't even want it to work anymore anyways. Besides, if the girl you like is who I think she is, well I'm sorry to tell you that she is madly in love with Pete and I can't see her stopping that any time soon. So here is your hoodie back and we can both go our own separate ways." I practically word-vomited as Beckett just stood there looking at me, seeming to be in shock. He wasn't denying it... so that says it all, right?
I placed the hoodie on the table, feeling my heart start to ache as I tried to keep it together. It was only a week Elodie, get a freaking grip! Yet why did this hurt more now with Beckett than when Hudson did it?
I stood, ready to walk back to my room when Beckett leaned down even closer to me.
"Elodie, sit." He ordered, making me want to scoff. Seriously?! Before I could scold him for being so rude, he began to speak again. "Please, for the love of god Elodie, just sit down and listen to what I have to say." He added, much more calmly this time.
I blinked my eyes up at him, feeling my body start to lower as it seemed to have a mind of its own when Beckett took a deep breath and went to reach for that bandage on his neck.
"Sunshi-"
"Wow! Something smells amazing! What are we having girl-" Ari yelled before coming into the kitchen and immediately stopping. I swear her brown eyes were wider than I have ever seen them as she stared at the two of us, trying to assess the situation before her.
Of course she would come right now when I was about to get some answers, perfect freaking timing.
