Marietta now prayed that if there were any treasures left which belonged to the Chateau she would be able to find them. Then as she rose to her feet, it struck her that the one place she had not taken the men when they had made their tour of the Chateau was the cellar. She had, in fact, just glanced into it, knowing only too well that there would be nothing left in the way of wine or brandy and she had been horrified at the mess she had seen. Now as if compelled, she walked back through the hall and into the cellar which was close to the kitchen. It meant walking down several stone steps and opening a heavy door, which she managed without any help. Although the door was heavy the lock had been broken, doubtless by the impatience of the Revolutionaries to seek out the Marquis’s wine. S
