CHAPTER THREEWhen they left the study, although the sale was not scheduled to start until two o’clock, they found that the Great Hall was filling up. Men were examining the pictures and they pulled one after another from against the wall where they had been arranged. They were also arguing with each other as to the date of a piece of furniture or complaining that it was wrongly marked in the sale catalogue. Zarina saw Mr. Bennett at the end of the hall and walked towards him. As she did so, she said to Rolfe, “You must come and meet Mr. Bennett. He will pay all the bills and will cope with everything.” They reached Mr. Bennett and Rolfe held out his hand. “How are you, Bennett?” he enquired. “It is a long time since we last met.” “It’s good to see your Lordship,” Mr. Bennett replie
