Special agent Thomas Anderson waits for his partner the following day, but Jacob Smith does not show up for work. It is not unusual for Jacob not to show up for work for a few days. But, no one worries, and they joke that Jacob must be out, Mafia hunting again. It is an inside joke among the special agents in LA. They know Jacob likes to brag about the Dons he captured, but they know the Italian and Russian Mafias only allow it as they are low-ranking Dons that will never talk as they are afraid of being killed by the mob. They end up dead before they make it to court anyway. So they are not really of any help to the FBI. It has been three days, and Jacob has not shown up for work. Thomas is a little concerned. He knows Jacob and how ambitious he is. Maybe Jacob met his match and went after the wrong Mafia family. Perhaps he found out who the Casellas are. Thomas decides to go to Jacob's house that afternoon to ensure Jacob is okay. Thomas knows he may piss off Jacob, who does not like it when an agent goes to check up on him as they may blow his cover.
"Thomas, have you seen Jacob?" The leader of high ranks, Marvin Wallis, asks. Jacob is his blue-eyed boy, and he makes Marvin look good.
"No, sir, I have not seen him for three days. So I was wondering if I should go and check up on him," Thomas says.
"I will go with you. Jacob is not answering his phone, and I am afraid something has happened to Jacob. Jacob always answers my calls," Marvin says. Thomas gets up from his desk, where he is profiling a serial killer. The serial killer has been playing games with the FBI, and although he leaves clues everywhere, they have not caught him yet. His victims are all males, and their bodies appear all over town. They know the serial killer contacts his victims on the internet, but they do not understand how he lures them in and kills them. His victims' bodies do not show signs of s****l assault, so he is not doing it for s****l pleasure. What his motivation is, no one knows at this stage of the game. Thomas does not talk about the case as he knows his partner and his superiors are not interested in what he does, as his partner is the star of LA's FBI branch.
"Let's go," Thomas says. Thomas also knows his partner does drugs, and his superiors do not really care, so even if they catch him red-handed, they will do nothing to Jacob. He grabs his jacket from his chair and follows Marvin out of the office to Marvin's car. Jacob does not stay too far from the office, and they are there in no time. Thomas knocks, but there is no answer. Finally, a neighbour peeks out her window and sees the two men standing in front of Jacob's door.
"I have not seen Jacob for days! I do not think he is home," The neighbour shouts.
"We are working with him and want to check up on him," Marvin says as he feels the knob of the door. It is open and not locked. Marvin and Thomas draw their weapons. The neighbour has pulled her head inside again and does not see the two FBI agents pulling out their guns. It is an upper-class neighbourhood, and Thomas wonders why his superior does not question where Jacob gets the money to stay there. It is not like agents pay enough to be able to afford this lifestyle. Thomas says nothing. He knows Jacob is doing illegal things, but Thomas feels it is not his problem as his superiors will have to look into it, not him.
They see Jacob lying on the couch. The apartment is cold, as the air conditioning is running. However, they can smell that Jacob is dead and that he did not die recently. Marvin and Thomas look at each other. They don't even have to check Jacob for any signs of life. They know he is dead. Thomas walks through the house with his gun in his hand. One never knows if the killer is still in the apartment. Marvin is on the phone and calls the paramedics and the office to send out a forensic team. Unfortunately, an FBI agent is dead, and Marvin does not see the need to contact the local police. This is a case for the FBI.
"Clear!" Thomas shouts, as there is no sign of anyone in the apartment. Jacob did not have a girlfriend, as far as Thomas knew. He returns to the sitting room, where Marvin sits on a chair with his hand in his hair. Thomas walks over to where Jacob is lying on the couch. He looks at the body but sees no visible marks or anything on Jacob. Thomas sees the needle in Jacob's hand. It seems like an accidental overdose. But Thomas feels there is something more to Jacob's death, and he thinks Jacob messed with the wrong Mafia family this time. It looks like a job of the Mafia, but he knows from experience that it will be tough to prove it or find out who was responsible for his death. As the FBI is an expert in solving crime, the Mafia is an expert at hiding a crime. So it will be impossible to find the killer or killers of Jacob Smith. Thomas looks around for any video recording equipment or security cameras. He finds it fast, but as expected, nothing on the security camera footage indicates foul play.
"This is the job of the Mafia. Jacob went after the wrong family. He was reaching too high," Marvin says. He is sad and can not believe Jacob is dead.
"I agree, but you know we will never find his killers. The Mafia leaves no traces. If they had done it, they would have known who Jacob was and that we would be looking at all the footage of the security cameras or other recording devices," Thomas says. He has gloves on as they always go out prepared. He picks up Jacob's phone, which is charging as if Jacob was charging his phone. It is details like that that make it impossible to try and prove that this is a murder and not an accidental overdose. There is nothing on Jacob's phone. Thomas knows even if they send it away for analysis, it will not show anything, as the Mafia has the best hackers and high-tech guys working for them. If they delete something from a phone, they do it right, with no traces of the original video or document. Thomas is correct, as Harper's tech guys wiped all evidence from the phone, which can never be restored or traced. Thomas knows if the Mafia is involved, the phone is useless to them.
"Nothing on the phone, right?" Marvin asks.
"Nothing at all. We can try to find his killers, but I know if the Mafia is involved, we are wasting our time, but I am willing to try," Thomas says. Marvin nods.
"I know you will try, but I can tell you we are wasting time, as you said. Even if we find Jacob's killers, our directors and politicians are already in their pockets, and nothing will come of it," Marvin says. Thomas agrees. He and Marvin know how it works. So they might as well rule it an accidental overdose and be done with it. They will only waste resources on a dead-end case. They feel helpless as they know they can do nothing to get justice for Jacob. Soon, the place is filled with agents, and the forensics team takes over. Everyone knows what happened, but no one dares to say it. The forensics team worked for days to see if they could find anything, but there was nothing. The autopsy only shows an overdose, and Jacob's death is ruled an accidental overdose. Everyone that knew Jacob knew he was an addict. His parents and siblings were not surprised, as Jacob did drugs from a young age.
The FBI officers are not convinced, but no one is willing to take the Mafia on and ends up like Jacob, so they all keep quiet. They all know Jacob went too far and pissed off the wrong Mafia family. However, they can not tell what Mafia killed Jacob. So how will they even know what family killed him? It could be the Russian Mafia, the Italian Mafia or any other Mafia from all over the world. Thomas looks at the photos of his family again. Thomas is unwilling to jeopardize his own life and that of his family. He will not do that for Jacob Smith, a nasty person. Maybe if Jacob was a good agent with no history of being a bad cop, Thomas might have to consider investigating further. Not even Melvin is willing to put his life and that of his wife and children in danger. The agents of the FBI in LA accept that Jacob died of an accidental overdose, and no one opens his case again. His file is closed, and no one mentions him again.
Thomas concentrates on the serial killer again. He wants to catch the guy going around killing men of all ages. However, Thomas has a new partner. Her name is Kayla. She is blond and beautiful. Kayla likes her quiet, handsome partner and does everything she can to get him to ask her out. Thomas is only interested in his work and does not care what his partner is trying. One day, as Kayla and Thomas are in a coffee shop, Carley and Carol Morgan walk in. Carley's heart skips a beat as she sees Thomas with a beautiful blond by his side. Thomas knows Carley and Carol, and he greets them. Thomas can not stop staring at Carley, and Kayla feels jealous as she can see her partner has feelings for Carley Morgan. She knows Carley and Carol from social media and tabloids.
"Are you going to introduce me?" Kayla asks. She keeps glaring at Carley, but Carley hardly notices the blond as she only has eyes for Thomas.
"Sure, Carley, Carol, this is Kayla. She works with me," Thomas says, as he does not want Carley to think he has a girlfriend.
"Nice to meet you, Kayla," Carley and Carol say. Kayla looks them up and down before greeting them.
"So you are the two social butterflies I see all over the tabloids and social media," Kayla says as she wants to put the two girls down, but Carley and Carol smile and nod. Carol and Carley saw the news of an FBI agent that overdosed, and the Mafia knew who he was, but they said nothing to Thomas as they knew what Thomas did for a living but did not want Thomas to know they knew.
"Can I buy you a cup of coffee, Carley?" Thomas asks. Kayla does not like it, as Thomas never even asks her if he can pay for her coffee. Carol laughs as Thomas and Carley walk to the counter.
"Looks like we will have to pay for our own coffee. Thomas only has eyes for Carley," Carol says. Kayla does not look too happy about it and walks to the counter.
"We can not stay long. We have a job to do," Kayla says rudely to Thomas. Carol realizes that Kayla is jealous and looks at the beautiful blond. So Kayla is in love with Thomas, who is attractive. Hmm, it is interesting. Carol smiles as she knows Kayla does not stand a chance against her sister. Carley is perfect, and no man will look at any other woman but Carley after he falls in love with her. Kayla can forget about Thomas as he is ideal for Carley. Carol knows Carley is afraid to date an FBI agent as she is worried the rest of the Italian Mafia will see her as a traitor. Carley should know better, as the Mafia and the Casella family do not care who you date or marry, as long as you keep them out of the Mafia business and do not spill the beans on the Italian Mafia. If you know you can trust your partner and are willing to help the Italian Mafia, they will accept them into the Italian Mafia family. Still, if you are unsure, you can leave the Mafia and live a peaceful life with your partner. It all depends on you and your partner. You and your family will be at peace if you do not talk about your connections to the Mafia or what they do. Carol will speak to Carley about following her dream and being with Thomas before she loses him to someone like Kayla.
