Stretched out on the sofa, some mindless drivel playing to itself on the television, Nigel was well on the way to being sloshed when there was a knock at the door. Nigel peered over at the mantle clock and had to blink several times before it came into focus. Who the hell would be at his door after midnight? “Phil!” He jumped to his feet and immediately sank to his knees, barely missing the coffee table. “Just a minute!” he called out, levering himself up with the aid of the sofa’s arm. Knocking over a floor-standing lamp, Nigel made his unsteady way to the front door and fiddled with the lock, only to discover it was already unlocked. Nigel flung open the door, almost unbalancing himself in the process. “I didn’t think you’d…” the rest of his words died in his throat and disappointment
