Myrtle heaved a big sigh as Red gestured for her to roll down her window. Then she said in a perky tone, “Good morning, Red. Nice to see you today. Miles and I are bringing some cookies to Shay. The poor thing has lost all her remaining family in the last few days.”
Red glowered at her. “If I didn’t know better, Mama, I’d think you had a police scanner at your house.”
“What a silly thing to say! I wouldn’t want to listen to all that nonsense. Half of it would be reports from Maylene Merriweather saying kids were cutting through her yard on the way to the creek. No, Miles and I were at the diner having an early breakfast when we heard the news.”
Lieutenant Perkins walked over and stood next to Red. “Good morning, Mrs. Clover.”
She beamed at him. “Good morning to you!”
