Audrey
Jason stood beside his car and waited for me to grab my purse from the passenger seat of my car. I couldn’t leave my purse sitting in my car unattended, knowing it was one of the few things I had left.
As we walked up the sidewalk, leading to his porch, Jason draped an arm over my shoulders and mumbled, “I haven’t seen you since the day you married that rich guy. How has married life been?”
That was all it took to make the tears I had been fighting slip from the corner of my eyes and roll down my cheeks. Of course, Jason saw those tears and immediately rushed to say, “Don’t tell me he has done something to hurt you! I swear, I will break both of his arms!”
I couldn’t help but to giggle at my friend’s threat, knowing he was no match for my husband. Luke was over six feet tall, whereas Jason barely reached five and a half feet tall. Luke visited the gym often, keeping his body fit and muscular, whereas Jason was a scrawny, tech guy, who never went to the gym.
“Jason, I appreciate your willingness to cause my husband harm, but it’s really not necessary. Let’s go inside, then I will explain everything,” I suggested in a low voice, not wanting to attract attention from others.
“Whatever you need, I’m at your command, my lady,” Jason playfully responded, as we continued to his door.
As soon as we got inside, he pulled me over to the couch and insisted I sit down, then he walked to the other room, returning less than a minute later with two cans of beer. When he got closer, I noticed it wasn’t just any beer. It was the same beer we loved to drink during our college days.
I didn’t waste any time popping that tab and chugging down the entire beer. When I set the empty can on the round coffee table in front of me, Jason held the other can out and sheepishly mumbled, “I think you need this more than me. I’ll go grab a few more, then you can tell me all about it.”
Right at that moment, a loud burp escaped from my mouth, earning a chuckle from Jason. After saying, “Excuse me,” I wiped off my lips and thanked Jason for the beers.
As I popped the tab on the second beer, those horrible images flashed in my mind once again. Hoping to drink them away, I downed the second beer, then I slammed the can on the table and let out another loud burp.
For too long, I had been acting the part of a respectable, well-mannered wife to a billionaire CEO, and I was done with that s**t. It had been nothing but wine and champagne since I married that abusive, unfaithful piece of s**t. Now it was time for me to embrace my wild side again, while also making a new name for myself.
When Jason returned, he chuckled at my two empty cans while handing me a third beer, then he sat down on the couch beside me. This time when I popped the tab, I took a much smaller swig, then I muttered another thank you before throwing myself back against the couch and mumbling, “Damn, I’ve missed the taste of this delicious beer.”
“How long has it been since you had one of these?” he curiously inquired.
“Too long,” I answered with a frown.
“Alright, Audrey. I can’t take it any longer. What brought you here today?” he asked in all seriousness.
A scowl formed on my face, then I took another swig of my beer before angrily snarling, “Luke is a bastard! I caught him in our bed with another woman! Can you believe that bullshit? I gave him everything! I would have done anything to give him pleasure, and he knows that. How could he do this to me?”
By the end of my outburst, I was breaking down in loud sobs, and the tears were cascading from my eyes like a waterfall. Saying the words out loud shattered my ice covered heart all over again, and there was no putting it back together any time soon.
Luke’s indiscretion broke me in ways that I wasn’t sure I would ever bounce back from. I was completely devastated, and I had no clue what I was doing. All I knew was that I couldn’t go back. I couldn’t face him after what he did without losing it.
Jason wrapped his arms around me and sympathetically murmured, “I’m so sorry this happened to you. I thought for sure you two had a love that would never falter. Sheesh, I sure was wrong about that. What can I do to help you?”
“I don’t know where to go from here. Luke has always said if I tried to leave him, he would hunt me down and either drag me back or kill me on the spot, but I can’t stay with him. I can endure the abuse inflicted by his hands, but I can’t look past him cheating on me. I need to file for a divorce, then I need to disappear. I can’t ask my parents for help, because I’m scared they’ll slip up and tell him where I’m at. What should I do?” I whined to my old friend.
“Damn, Audrey! This is not what I was expecting when you walked into the store today, but I have some ideas. Do you remember Cedric or Destiny from English 101?” Jason responded with a smirk.
“Yeah, I remember both of them. Why? What do you have in mind?” I asked with big, hopeful eyes.
“Destiny became a divorce lawyer, and Cedric became a jack of all trades. The things he can make happen are unbelievable. I can give them a call and get you set up to meet with them,” he offered.
“I would be forever grateful for whatever help you could give me right now. I have some money saved up, so paying for their services shouldn’t be a problem,” I replied with gratitude lacing my voice.
