Hughes emotionless went inside the elevator as soon as it opens the door. Looking severe and unbothered, he pressed the elevator button that is going down to the lobby. He checks his reflection in the mirror, and he smiled at himself, a fictitious and fake one.
“This is unfortunate, and this is not what I expected to happen after those tiring flights,” he whispered to himself. He looks disgusted. “Asher caught us with her bare naked eyes, and she cried in pain in front of me! You’re stupid, Hughes!”
He continuously kicked his traveling bag beside him as he rumples his messy hair. He looks devastated, frustrated, and disheartens. Disappointments are written all over his wrinkled face. Asher becomes his friends, too; like Andrius, he looked at her and spoiled her as if she were his younger sister since he doesn’t have a sister and just one brother.
“Hold of yourself, man!” he vented a groan and continued to kick the poor traveling bag of him who already fell on the floor of the elevator, “You should break up with him, right now!”
He let a profound and subtle sigh as he gets his phone inside his leather bag. His breath becomes heavy as his heart holds as he scrolls the number of Andrius on his contacts. He certainly loved this man without a valid reason, as this is his first time to get into a relationship with a man like him. The last time that he had a relationship is when he is in ninth grade. That relationship blossoms until their twelfth grade, but after their graduation day in high school, he broke up with her as the girl caught him making out with their class president, who is self-declared as gay.
“What goes on to you, Hughes?” the first line asked by his girlfriend, “Please tell me, it’s not what I think the stuff that I saw, tell me.”
The young and naive Hughes bore his eyes into her beautiful and innocent face. Her cheeks turned into blushing red as she is frustrated at what she saw back on the stage. Hughes tried to open his mouth to explain his side, but in the end, he holds himself and said the phrases that broke her more into pieces. He thinks that it is favorable for both of them.
“Let’s break up.”
It was three words, with one sentence. That made the sobs louder of the tall and young gorgeous girl. Her tears flowed down from her cheeks like the raindrops in the old roof of their school. Her make-up that day smudge, she can’t stop herself from crying as she watched the back of her first love slowly walking away from her.
“Hughes!” she called his name, hoping that their break up could be still meaningless as she disagreed with him. “Stopped, please!” she pleaded as she sobbed louder than before.
Hughes didn’t stop, and he didn’t even look back at her. In the back of his mind, it was their right choice for them since she is going to Australia for college and Hughes is going to Manila. He thinks that a long-distance relationship is not for him; his girlfriend might get bored and find someone else. He is just giving both of them liberation as they were still young.
“I won’t stop loving you, Hughes, whether you are part of the LGBT community!” that the last screams he heard from his first ex-girlfriend.
Hughes unconsciously touched his lips as it crept into a sincere smile. He undoubtedly adores that girl, but because he felt humiliated for the things he’d done with their class president, he decided to broke up with her. Hughes loved her smile, her attitude, and her humor. He is the first to proclaim and admit his feelings to her on the heart’s day of February. It appeared that the girl likes him too. The two decided to get into a romantic relationship at a young age, but full of respect. She is also Hughes first kissed on his lips on their first celebration of the anniversary.
“For some reason, I missed her,” he whispered as he dialed the phone number of Andrius.
From that day, she never met his ex-lover again. He knows through a familiar friend that she left to study college in Australia after a week of their graduation. He felt unhappy, knowing that he never gets his last cuddle before she left. His life goes on without that girl on his side. He never gets into a relationship again after her, and he enjoyed his life through flirting and flings.
“Hughes, what happens to your girlfriend?” Giordano, his younger brother, asked him while they are eating dinner. “I didn’t see her for a while. Did you two decided to broke up?”
His whole family known his relationship with that girl, and they like her for him to be his wife in the future. He kicked Giordano’s feet under the table to stopped him from laughing at him, but the slow and sluggish Giordano just looked at him innocently with grinned and teasingly.
“Why are you kicking my feet under the table?!” he asked in an overacting tone, “Mom, Dad!”
His parents stopped eating and looked at him with an annoying glance and disbelief.
“Did you broke up with her?” it was his mother.
“No, Mom, she just went abroad to study,” he replied as he threw sharp glances at Giordano.
“And why she didn’t even say goodbye?”
“She was in a hurried Mom, she told me that Yuriah was going to call you when she’s not busy.” he lied again for he knows they will get mad if they’ve learned that he broke up with her, “You know her numerous hobbies, Mom.”
“Alright, I am looking forward to her calls.”
“He is lying Mom, I heard from my classmate that he made her cry.” it was his brother again, “Hughes broke up with her with odd reason.”
“I didn’t, Giordano!” he shouts as he continuously denied it.
“Yes, you are Hughes. Someone saw you did that.”
“Giordano, stopped teasing your brother!” their father mumbled like rumbling thunder, “If he said he didn’t, probably he didn’t break up with her. We are in the middle of our dinner; let’s have some reverence for our precious food.”
Right after that, his brother stopped, and they eat silently and peacefully at their dining table.
He was still confused about himself, as he loves women too, but everything gets clear as crystal clear water when he met Andrius. His heartbeat gets excited every time he talked with him. And that day, he realized that he is also into a man and not only for the opposite gender. He is indeed part of the LGBT like his ex-lover shouts on her last phrases that day.
“Let’s break up,” he mumbled after Andrius answered his call, “Let’s break up, Andrius.”
The elevator door opened. Hughes’s eyes broadened when he saw the girl from his past standing in front of him. She was wearing a white halter dress and flesh-high heels sandals. She sweetly smiles at him like the old times as their eyes met. She did not change even a bit.
“How are you, Hughes?”
It was Yuriah Hatswell, his first girlfriend.
