He'd done it again. Her i***t brother had once again gotten him into trouble that Eva had to get him out of. At 31, Eva wished her 28-year-old brother would grow up. Eva had been cleaning up his messes for as long as she could remember. From the smallest thing as his dishes in the kitchen while their parents pulled double shifts or the bigger things of paying for his rehab for the second time. She was honestly so tired of it. She had planned on putting a down p*****t on a house but now she was in a business building giving that money to pay off his drug and other loans from a cartel or mafia or gang, whatever they were calling themselves. She was giving them nearly 40000 in cash with the hopes they would accept a p*****t plan for the other 1,000,000. It would take her quite a while to pay off the rest. A couple years depending on how she felt about dipping into her savings. She would probably dip into her savings because she would need the incoming cash to fix her brother's next mistake.
Her friends all called her crazy for what she did for her brother. But what was she supposed to do? Her parents were immigrants with low paying jobs. They had worked double or even triple shifts for 10 years so she could go to medical school. Which she did. Specialising in plastic surgery to be able to get her family as far from the poverty line as possible. They were the ones that got a house in a nice area the moment she could afford it. They got the comfortable cars and the big grocery allowance while she stayed in her slightly shitty apartment with her third hand car. All of her luxury money for herself went into her useless brother because she would never let her parents worry about it.
As for her brother, he wasn't a bad person. He was just looking to get rich in the wrong places. He wasn’t street smart, which was unfortunate because he also wasn’t book smart either. He had first tried to study in school but soon realised he didn’t have the same smarts she had. Then he got jealous and tried to sabotage her. After that didn’t work, he googled get rich quick schemes. His first one was a pyramid scheme which ended with her parents having to sell one of the much-needed cars to pay that of. As he grew into his twenties, he decided to go into drug dealing, which lead to him using more than he was selling. He was in his second round of rehab when an ominous man showed up at her door asking for him. He then promptly threatened her brother's life and her own if she didn’t come up with the money.
So here she was. The building was old. The architecture was beautiful and she marvelled slightly as she walked up to the front desk. The young blonde at the counter greeted her sweetly.
“How can I help?” she asked. Eva wondered if this woman knew who she was working for. By the small amount of white powder on the receptionist’s right nostril she guessed yes.
“I need to make a payment.”
“You’ll need to go to the man over there,” she pointed to what looked like a very fancy bank section, “he’ll be able to help with that.”
“Thank you.”
Eva watched as the woman’s pupils dilated. When in her trauma surgery rotation, she had spent many shifts as an ER doctor. She had seen horrors, but what she saw the most as lives being torn apart by drugs. Drugs that were sold by this company – Angelini-Messina. It started as a legal consultant but quickly expanded due to the illegal activities supporting it. The Angelini Family was a notorious drug cartel while The Messina Family dealt in more violent acts. Together, the families built an empire.
Eva stalked towards the counter. She was neither a fan of The Angelini’s or The Messina’s. Her high school has been a war zone. The joining of the families was a recent development that had surprised her when she had returned home after university. Before then it had been the two families and their supporters always at odds with one another. In her school, if you weren’t with The Angelini’s or The Messina’s, you were an outcast. Luckily the outcasts all enjoyed each other’s company. In her year there were 4 of them that she was still friends with to the day.
Oh, what Sabrina would think about Eva walking into the building of the people they detested.
“Next,” the attendant man said. Eva walked to his counter.
“Morning,” she greeted curtly as she pulled her purse from her handbag, “I’m here to pay a debt and hopefully set up a p*****t plan.”
“Name.”
“Carlos Bernardi.”
The man typed on his computer before looking back at her.
“Carlos has 1.04 million in debt. How much will you be paying now?”
“40,000. The rest will need to be paid in instalments.”
“I can give you 8,000 a month with a 11% interest rate.”
“12,000 a month with a 4% interest rate.”
“6%.”
“Fine,” she pulled out her card and swiped it as it showed on the key pad.
“Name of the payee” the man insisted, “you are clearly not Carlos.”
“That is none of your business,” she scowled at him, “his account is being paid. More than that is none of anyones concern.”
“Fine,” he soured, “payments are to be done weekly on a Thursday at 10:45 sharp.”
“Weekly?”
“Next,” she once again said.
“No wait,” she pressed, “I meant 12,000 monthly.”
“Next,” he repeated.
Eva walked away in a daze, her brain running a million miles to see how she could afford 48,000 a month to her brothers debt. She would run her savings dry. Her parents would need to move into a smaller house, that was half the amount monthly. She would need to move back in with them, that was a weeks p*****t from her monthly rent. The last part she would have to work overtime in the emergency room or general surgery night shift to make up. Hopefully the hospital would let her.
All she could think as she walked out was how screwed she was. And how much she hated her stupid, dumb brother. This would be the last time.
