When Serenity and Serena arrived at the house, they changed into some spare clothes stashed on the porch before they walked into the house.
Serenity held Serena's trembling hand when they saw a clear view of the two young men that were their mates.
Not even sparing Jared a glance, she tugged Serena into the living room and pushed Serena to sit down on a single chair while she sat on the handle.
Awkward silence enveloped the group as they all sat in silence for a minute or two. Thomas was the first to break. He couldn't handle the deafening silence any longer.
"Well, this is the most awkward I've ever felt in my whole entire life. I mean, Jesus Christ!" Thomas complained in frustration with the two couple in front of him. "The polite thing to do is to introduce yourselves to your mates!"
Four pairs of eyes landed on Thomas, one pair glaring at in extreme hostility. That was Serenity, of course.
"No, he's right. Let's introduce ourselves formally." Jared took the liberty to take control of the situation. Leaving it to Jorah didn't seem like a good idea given that his younger brother was clenching his fist so hard to stop himself from moving towards his mate.
"My name is Jared Lupe, and this is my younger twin brother Jorah Lupe." Jared stared at Serenity when he introduced himself and his brother. Serenity didn't even look in his direction even when he started speaking.
It would be a lie if Jared said it didn't hurt, but he forced himself to will it away. He already knew that this wasn't going to be easy.
Serena glanced at her sister after Jared introduced himself. Her eyes flickered to Jared, who was still staring at her sister. Immediately, she understood what was going on.
'What are the odds that we are mated to a pair of twin brothers?' Serena mused but then decided to introduce herself and her sister.
"I'm.... My name is Serena, and this is my sister Serenity Walker. Nice to meet you...." Serena trailed off nervously.
"Serena." Jorah suddenly called out her name. Serena stiffened after hearing him call out her name. Biting her lip, she cast her eyes to her lap. She couldn't look at him. His tone was filled with grievance when he called out her name.
"Serena, please!" Jorah begged as he stood up, his eyes trained on his mate. "What did I do to scare you? What did I do to make you hate me?"
"No!" Serena's eyes widened when she heard that, and without thinking, she denied his words.
"No? You haven't looked at me. Not once since you arrived. If you don't hate me, look me in my eyes, Serena." Jorah stepped forward, and Serenity sprang into action. Stepping in front of her sister, she glared at Jorah, who gladly glared back. "Get the f**k out of my way!"
"You're too close. " Serenity ignored him and subtly told him to back off. However, Jorah was agitated. His eyes glowed brighter, and his skin moved.
"MOVE!" He roared out in rage. His authority as king hit Serenity in full blast. Even as strong as she was, she could not disobey his command this time.
But before things could get worse, Serena moved from behind Serenity and walked up to the raging Jorah and grabbed his face between her hands, and pulled him down. For the second time today, their eyes met, and the mate bond stired.
His glowing eyes receded instantaneously, and his anger calmed. Shakily, he raised his hand to cover hers. When she didn't pull away from him, the unsettling feeling he had the entire time died down.
Nuzzling his face into her palm, he kept constant eye contact with Serena. Meanwhile, Jared moved to Serenity's side. He opened his mouth and was about to talk to her softly, but before he could, she glared at him and moved a few paces away from him.
"Don't overstep your bounds. We will talk alone after these two finish." Serenity coldly told him. His heart sunk when he heard her words. His pursed his trembling lips and nodded, but then he noticed she wasn't even looking at him.
Gritting his teeth, he moved away from her further with his head down. He struggled to keep a straight face. His wolf felt as if it were running in circles within him.
Thomas gaze aways lingered on Serenity, so he saw what she did. His heart tightened when he caught a fleeting glance at Jared's expression.
As a man who had been mated for many years, he understood better than anyone how the mate bond worked. It made Thomas regret saying anything to Jared. Maybe it wouldn't have hurt him this much. But even as he pitied him, he understood Serenity better than anyone.
She would never accept Jared. And it was unfair, but what else could Thomas do? Pushing Serenity to accept Jared would be even harder than roman concrete.
"Come outside with me." Serena woke Thomas from his thoughts. He watched as Serena grabbed Jorah's hand and tugged him outside.
Without much of a choice, he followed with Jared and Serenity. In the front yard, Serena pulled off her dress and tossdd it aside before she shifted in front of Jorah.
Shock filled his eyes as he watched his mate transform into a pup like wolf. Jared was also in shock, but then he understood. Serena ran away because of this. She was scared Jorah would reject her.
But even if you reject someone, the mate bond will get stronger and more painful over time, forcing you to go back to the said mate you rejected.
Jorah stood there in complete shock as he watched his mate's wolf form.
"That's why you ran from me?" Jorah asked her. "You thought I would reject you?"
Serena nodded her head in her wolf form. Jorah's lips pressed into a thin line with her agreement. He got why Thomas told him what he did. Why he told him not to tell Serena he was the king. He had to stabilize her first, make sure she understood that he wanted her regardless of what she was.
"f**k," He mumbled softly as he sank to his knees. "I would never try to fight the mate bond over something so trivial. I don't care if you're small. it just means I have to protect you even more. A task I am willing to take on for the rest of my life because you're mine."
Serena walked up to him and placed her two front paws on his knees before she shifted into her human form. Once she was in her human form before Jorah's eyes could wander down on her naked body, she grabbed his face between her hands again.
"Alpha king of the realm, Jorah Lupe." She called out his full title along with his name. He stiffened, his eyes widened and his mouth fell open. "I cannot be with you. I'm not fit to be your queen. I'm just a runt."
"No, no! you're my queen nothing can change that. Do you expect me to accept this?" Jorah voice trembled, his emotions went out of control. Disbelief plastered all over his face as he stared into Serena's eyes.
"I don't accept this, I don't accept you either! A runt as queen? Do you think they will allow a defective wolf like me become queen? You'll lose your title!" Serena argued.
"f**k my title! f**k being king! You think I'll be able to survive without you? All it took was one glance in yours eyes and I was done for. I cannot! I will not!" Jorah pulled away from her and cried out.
"No it doesn't matter what you say, I'm not worthy to be your mate." Serena dropped her hands at her side.
"You don't get to decide that!" Jorah roared, his clenched fist slammed into the ground.
"And I didn't. Everybody else did."Serena smiled sadly. "I heard good things about you and how good of a king you are. This is for the good of the realm."
Jorah stared at her in disbelief. He couldn't believe what he was hearing."The good of the realm? What about what's good for me?"
"This is best!" Serena doubled down. "Please respect my wishes."
"Hahahahahahaha," Jorah laughed out, his eyes tinted in sadness. "Respect your wishes, huh?"
Jorah shakily stood up. He turned his head, and his eyes locked with his twin. 'And he said you had the difficult one.' Jorah mindlinked his brother before he turned and stumbled his way down the driveway like a zombie.
Without a second thought, Jared rushed to his brother and caught him as he tripped over his feet. His brother was firmly in his arms when he broke.
