I had snuck up to Jake’s room late last night. His door had been locked, though, so I let myself into the room that I liked to sleep in on the visitor floor. I needed to find a way to get close to Jake. The distance that he was putting between us was starting to worry me. I didn’t sleep well, and the next morning, as I was leaving the room to head downstairs to start my shift in the kitchen, I was so tired that I forgot to check first. I was close to the stairs when I heard voices. Panicking, I hid behind a huge plant on the landing.
