Chapter 2 - Back to Where It All Began

2042 Words
CYRENIA Five years later… I stood in the mirror and pulled my black hair back into a high ponytail. Quickly deciding it made me look like a child, I let the hair fall back around my face. The black made me look stoic, and I wasn’t sure if I liked it. “I don’t think I have ever seen you this excited.” Myles walked into the room, his hair glistening the same black I now adorned. His height towered over me, and his muscles outnumbered my own. Despite that, I knew I could kick his ass any day. He may have been born an alpha, but I trained, bartered, and did everything except sell my soul to become one. Even that last one was questionable. “I’m not excited.” I picked up a silver hair pin and pulled up half my hair. I decided it was the best mix of dignified and casual. Myles put his hands on my shoulders and leaned in to whisper in my ear. “You look beautiful, and you look nothing like the woman I found five years ago.” His fingers dug into my shoulders, giving me a reassuring smile. He had found me after my own pack kicked me out, and he brought me back to life when I would otherwise have died. I owed him everything. “This is just another job.” That was a lie. It had been five years since I stepped foot in Pack Fornax. I wasn’t the same girl who ran away all of those years ago. I knew that, yet my heart thrummed as I thought about seeing all the people who broke me. The thought of finally destroying the family who killed an innocent girl for simply trying to protect me made my veins burn. Finally, I’d be able to protect the omegas I left behind. I’d make up for Saya’s death. Myles met my eyes in the mirror, assessing my mood. He had always been able to read me. “You’re not the same girl who left that pack. You look nothing like your old self, you go by a different name, and you smell like an alpha. No one probably remembers you, and even if they do, they won’t recognize you. Besides, no one will even be looking at you when you have someone as handsome as me at your side.” I rolled my eyes and thrusted my elbow into his gut. “Arrogant asshole,” I muttered under my breath as I took the opportunity to slip away from the mirror. Looking at my reflection did nothing for my own good. I only saw a stranger. For most of my life, I had sandy brown hair and freckles, but all of that was gone. My hair was different, my skin free of blemishes, and even my bone structure had been altered. Myles chuckled and straightened. “Seriously, Cy, why aren’t you smiling more? Haven’t you been working on this for the past five years?” I paused in front of my suitcase, his question eating away at me. I was excited to finally get my revenge, but it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders. It wasn’t just about killing Roman to get back at him for trying to force himself on me and killing Saya. It was about freeing the rest of the omegas who continued to suffer under the rule of the Haeil family. “Let’s go over the story one more time,” I said, deciding I wasn’t in the mood to think about everything that relied on this mission. “We’ve been through this a million times.” Myles slumped on the bed, pinching his lips together. When he acted like this, he looked more like a child than the leader of a strong werewolf pack. “We have to be absolutely sure. If anyone suspects anything—” “I am Myles Wyner, alpha of Pack Zan, the most powerful pack in the eastern territories—which is true by the way—and I have requested this meeting because I want to build relations with the packs in the western territories—not so true. I have brought my fiancé with me, because I am nothing without my mate and the love of my life—also not true.” I ignored the sarcasm that dripped off his tongue with his asides. “And I am Cyrenia Aeries, the only daughter of Veron Aeris, alpha of Pack Caelum. When I discovered you were my mate, I agreed to join your pack on the promise of becoming co-alpha. I want to learn more about the ways the western territories work to build a strong relationship.” Myles slowly clapped, sitting up. “Good. I think you even believe that’s true because you’ve said it so many times. Can we get going now? We’re going to miss our train because of your nerves.” “I’m not nervous,” I instantly said. Nervous wasn’t the right word. I bargained my life to gain the power of an alpha wolf, and for the first time in my life, I was ready to take the reins and make a real change in the world. No one could look down on me for being an omega. I would use my new alpha wolf and years of warrior training to make sure the omegas in Pack Fornax never suffered the way I had. Five years ago, I promised revenge on the Haeil family. Now was the time to fulfill that promise. Once I stepped foot in Pack Fornax, I wouldn’t leave until I left the place burning with Alpha Roman in the middle of it all. *** A finger in my ribs jolted me awake. The car was still moving, and when I looked outside, I saw the deep green pine trees flashing by. I glanced at Myles who had a giddy smile plastered on his face. “What are you laughing about?” I tried to stretch my aching limbs, but it was nearly impossible in the back of the sleek sedan. “You were snoring.” He sniggered to himself, much too amused. “You were also drooling.” My hand flew to my mouth, but it was completely dry. I punched Myles' arm and bared my teeth at him. I was always the crankiest just after being woken up, but that never seemed to phase the man next to me. He took pleasure in my foul moods, just like a brother would. “Haha, very funny, prick.” I pulled a compact mirror out of my purse and checked my appearance. I had to make sure I looked absolutely perfect when we met with Roman. It was essential he believed my lies. He was the one I wanted to suffer the most. I didn’t want to just kill him, though. No. I wanted to take everything away from him. I wanted his allies and pack members to see him as a pathetic alpha who was never worthy of leading others. For that, I needed to find out what kind of alliances Roman had built and tear them down behind his back. “You actually were snoring,” Myles said. I ignored his comment, knowing he was just trying to get a rise out of me. “Why did you wake me up anyway?” “We’re almost there,” he said, but I didn’t need to hear his response to figure it out. The trees opened up into a wide area filled with houses and community buildings. It was just as I remembered, but it felt surreal seeing it again. It felt like several lifetimes ago I stood on those grounds. The driver slowed down as we made it into town, and my spine straightened as my body went on high alert. Children played in the streets, kicking balls around and laughing. Omegas carried buckets of clothing they were preparing to wash for those who held a higher status in the pack. Warriors trained to make sure they were in top shape in case there was ever an attack on the pack. Myles reached over and grabbed my hand. “They are all going to suffer for what they did to you. I will personally make sure of it.” My eyes narrowed on a small omega girl being pushed around by others in the street. She was outnumbered, and there was no way she was going to get out of the bullying unscathed. “Not everyone deserves to suffer,” I muttered to myself. As much as I wanted revenge, there were those who didn’t deserve to suffer anymore. I looked around the group surrounding the girl and prayed to the Moon Goddess that someone would step in to help the poor girl, but no one dared to look her way. No one cared about the omegas here. The pack truly hadn’t changed one bit. My blood thrummed with the need to kill everyone who ever hurt an omega. A boy nearly twice the size of the girl shoved her, making her fall back and drop all of her stuff. “Stop the car!” I shouted, something snapping inside of me. I jumped out of the car before it came to a full stop. My feet moved on their own, pulling me towards the helpless omega girl. “What do you think you’re doing?” My voice boomed as I slipped some of my alpha authority into it. The group of children bullying the girl flinched, and I knew I might have gone overboard on the wolf authority I used on children. I didn’t care. Bullies needed to learn their lessons, no matter their age. “She bumped into me. I was just going to teach her how to respect her superiors,” the boy who pushed her said. He looked up at me under hooded eyes, and the smirk on his face told me this wasn’t the first time he had told a lie like this to justify hurting an omega. He fully thought he would get away with it this time. “Just because you have a rank above the omega, it doesn’t give you the permission to hurt her. Instead, you should use your position to show kindness and strength. Otherwise, you’re just a cold-hearted bully.” My words were sharp, and I kept my alpha tone strong. This boy needed to learn it wasn’t okay to treat an omega like that, and if no one else planned on putting him in his place, I would. He wrinkled his nose in disgust. I wondered if he had ever been scolded like that in his entire life. “What does it matter? She’s just an omega. No one would care if she died.” I tried to remind myself that he was just a boy who had been misguided, but rage boiled deep within me. Myles grabbed my shoulder before I said or did anything to the child that I would later regret. “Go home. All of you.” His voice boomed with an unmistakable order. Even though he wasn’t the children’s alpha, he still had the power to make their wolves bend to his will. All the children, except the omega girl, began to disperse. I knelt on the ground next to her and offered her my hand. She whimpered and cowered at the sight of me, as if an alpha had never shown her any kindness. “It’s okay. I won’t hurt you,” I said in a low voice that was as sweet as I could make it. The last thing I wanted was to scare her further. She had already been through enough in her entire lifetime. “What’s going on here?” another voice boomed, pulling my attention away from the girl. I looked up to see who it was, and when Kylian stopped in front of Myles, my heart began racing. His eyes met mine, and his eyebrows furrowed together. Silence filled the air for what felt like an hour. Then Kylian spoke, saying the worst possible thing he could. “Nia?”
