Hyacinth’s expression turned from an amicable one to an expression of worry. He couldn’t help but remember the sight from a few days ago where Julius had brought his horde of fiends over to the human city and massacred it.
He had been keeping track of any movements within the forest for the past few days and noticed the large fiend activity on that fateful day when Eisha was nearly killed.
Hyacinth was using a spell that used the trees as eyes so he couldn’t do anything about it so when Julius arrived not a moment later, he was helpless to stop the m******e that ensued.
Of course, it wasn’t like the humans didn’t warrant the attack on their city. Hyacinth was well aware of what the church’s emissaries were doing. They wouldn’t come to the Shifting Hallows for no reason.
In ages past, there were many times when the church would interfere or snuff out a potential threat that would suddenly appear without notice. Not many things could escape the eyes of the World Tree so the elves who were connected to the World Tree personally knew about all the good and bad deeds the humans’ church had done throughout the ages.
The church was out on another ‘purging’ mission and Hyacinth could tell that Julius and his race of people were the targets. He also knew that Julius and his fiends weren’t the types to just wait around and surrender to their so-called ‘fate’ so they were bound to fight back.
Of course, most of the church’s purges were successful but there were a few times when the church’s plans backfired on them resulting in their own catastrophic losses.
There was one instance in the ancient past where the church had decided to crusade against the dark elves that lived underground because they were a heinous, dark race. Naturally, the elves had something else to say about that because no matter what, the dark elves were still elves despite their hostile relationship with every other race.
A hidden war ensued and in the end, the church had to back down because the elves were just much too powerful at that time. They lost an innumerable amount of paladins and priests. They had even lost the pope at that time who was assassinated by the elve’s strongest people.
There were just some races in the world that one should not arbitrarily touch. The church fell into a period where their activities, even within their own territory, were restricted.
Hyacinth couldn’t tell what would happen to the church and the humans if they tried touching Julius and his dangerous fiends since he couldn’t read the future. However, it was highly likely that Julius and his fiends would strike back at them.
This he could tell because even now, Julius was still in his battle form even when the young man went to meet him. Julius’s emotions were in chaos and it led to his energy flowing chaotically leaving him stuck in his fiendish battle form.
The list of items Hyacinth had given him earlier was a medicine that could relax his nerves and calm his mind. Well, his wife had nearly died before him so it wasn’t a wonder why Julius was still emotionally unstable.
“It’s rather harsh, but those humans deserved it this time as well…”
He couldn’t say anything about the innocents who didn’t know what was happening when all hell suddenly broke loose which led to their deaths. If they wanted to blame anyone, it should be their own race for being so presumptuous as to call themselves the rulers of the land that determined the fates of other living beings.
Not every race in the world was going to bow to them. All of the world’s races had an alliance of equal-standing between each other so they needed to be treated as equals. However, the humans, most particularly the church, thought that they were above the rest, and because of this misguided belief, they would go on to do the most ridiculous of things without caring about the aftermath that followed.
Just a few weeks ago, Hyacinth had received news from the elves living close to the World Tree that the humans had tried attacking the dwarves with the reason being that there was an ill-fated dwarf located somewhere within the kingdom that was destined to bring ruin upon all of the living species on the continent so they wanted to nip the individual at the bud before they could blossom into something truly dangerous in the future.
Naturally, the dwarves, who were well-renowned for their stubbornness and solidarity, didn’t give a rat's ass as to what nonsense the church was spewing and turned their dwarven cannons at the church’s army.
The dwarven kingdom of Aurumfaust consisted of only a single city that was named after the kingdom itself. It was built into a large mountain and underneath that mountain was a complex cave system that was magically reinforced.
It could be said that the city of Aurumfaust was actually the entire mountain. It was impenetrable and the ancient magic that prevented any sort of cave-ins and interferences was not something even the church’s pope could dispel.
It was presumptuous of the church to think that a different species of people would willingly listen to their hubris and hand over one of their own people to them. Of course, this was only a distraction as a small infiltration team consisting of dwarves taken in and trained by the church had long since entered the city and were searching for the individual in question.
From what the World Tree showed, said individual had been successfully assassinated right under the noses of the dwarves because the church soon backed off not long after. With their mission being completed, there was no sense in the humans continuing to camp outside of the Aurumfaust Kingdom with the dwarves’ magical cannons pointed directly at them.
It was only a few days later that the dwarves cut all ties with the humans and closed off all trading deals with them and any other race before going into seclusion. A single dwarven death led to this and the most unfortunate part for the rest of the world was that the dwarf who was assassinated turned out to be the Dwarven King’s daughter.
The cause of death was unknown but even without evidence, the dwarves concluded that it was the humans’ doing since they had declared about purging the evil within the city just a few days ago. With the dwarves now taken care of, the church was turning their gazes down south to the Shifting Hallows where Julius and his fiends had taken up residence.
Hyacinth wanted to tell Julius about this but he thought it would be better if he kept quiet since the fiends had suddenly displayed their ferocious side and after seeing how Julius conducted the hostile takeover of the city and had his mimics transform into people, Hyacinth began questioning whether his alliance with them was a good prospect or a bad one.
Until now, there was nothing that Julius had done that went against the elves’ moral code. The humans brought their doom and Julius’s wrath upon themselves so he could somewhat empathize why Julius massacred the entire city.
However, killing another intelligent race was always considered taboo so Hyacinth still felt revulsed by Julius’s actions. There had been many innocents inside the city and it was only a small group of people’s fault. Killing all of them was a little bit too much in his opinion.
“I only hope that the day where even we elves determine that you are an evil race doesn’t come, Mellon Julius.”
