Chapter 5.0: The Job

Chapter 5

After signing the contract they gave me, I was told that I must adapt to this place quickly. This place is surrounded by tents and many difficult passageways, and if you don’t know everything about the place, you will easily get lost. Miss Ava told me that she will call me tomorrow to give me my first job. Now, I have Lora with me. She was one of the girls who were working as informants for the organization. She told me that there is a room that was prepared for us to live in. Unlike the slaves who work day and night with no rest or a proper place to sleep in, we have our own sleeping quarters. We entered a shabby-looking two story building. The outside looks terrible because of its outdated and ruggish design, but when you go inside, it is quite presentable and neat. The furniture and items were not excessive or lavish, everything around here looks like it’s placed purely for function and not display.

“Come.” I followed her upstairs and Lora pointed to the room on the final row. There are a total of six rooms she was pointing towards the last one. “This is your room.” She said nonchalantly.

“Thank you.” I curtly replied.

“You still need to clean up that place, though. It hasn’t been used by anyone in a long time. Also, I was told that I need to make sure you know the rules here. Come down after changing into these,” she explained and handed me a pair of normal sleeping clothes. “You need to meet the other girls, too.” She added and I nodded my head.

“Yes, I understand.” I said and opened my room. It was smaller compared to the one I was living in back at the Manor. There is only one bed and a small space for a simple table and a chair. Lora was right, this place was quite dusty and it smelled moldy. I need to clean this up to make it a little bit more presentable so that I don’t embarrass myself if anyone ever visits. Also, because it’s going to be my home for quite some time, I want to at least be comfortable here so that I can rest properly. I already promised myself that I will buy that contract and free myself, after all! I want to live a normal life away from all this danger and chaos. And I will do everything to make it happen.

After changing into the sleeping ware Lora gave me, I went downstairs to meet the other girls. I slowly took my steps trying to pull myself together so that I don’t look too nervous or overwhelmed. There are five women moving around a small kitchen. They all seemed busy chopping vegetables, washing dishes and preparing the table to pay attention to me. But when they noticed me they all turned my way and looked at me.

“You’re here! Don’t just stand there and help us.” Lora said with a loud voice and I immediately nodded. I ran towards them and looked for something to do. The woman who was washing the dishes noticed my intentions right away and gave me a pair of gloves. I accepted it with a small nod and started washing the dishes together with her.

“Where are you from? You look like a noble woman.” The woman who was standing next to me while washing dishes with me asked curiously, trying to keep her voice low in order to not disturb the other girls. They were all focused on their tasks, after all.

“My name is Sheena Meadow. You’re right, I used to be a noble. But a few days ago, I was sold to work here by my Aunt. Don’t worry, I can handle the cooking and cleaning. I promise not to be a burden in this house.” I told her with an assuring voice and she smiled.

“That’s good to hear.” She replied and I was relieved that the atmosphere became lighter. “My name is Canary Nova. I was a noble woman too before I got here. But my parents used me to pay off their debts. All of us have different reasons explaining how we got here. And unfortunately, none of them are pleasant stories.” She with a sad tone, causing me to steal a glimpse of the other girls who were working behind me. It made me feel sad that all of us were in the same situation, and that we cannot escape from this place that easily.
