NINE: SUICIDE MISSION (II).

“I-I-I can’t… can’t take this anymore. You must leave m-me…” Silver panted, her breath laborious. “Silver.” “No! This is where we part… my journey ends here.” “Silver.” “You have to do this on your own. Be strong… g-g-g-go!” “Silver!” I snapped. “The gas station is literally five steps away from you.”   “Let me be dramatic, woman!” she countered. I shook my head and was about to reply with a sarcastic comment when I noticed a red sports car parked a few yards away from the gas station. The same red sports car that sped on the highway. The same red sports car that caused me to swerve on the road. The same red sports car that caused Becca’s death. Okay, that was a little too much, but it was the same sports car from an hour ago.   I tapped Silver on the shoulder and motioned towards the car. Realization dawned on her face and she turned red. Before I knew it, she was stomping towards the direction, her hands balled into fists. “I will show that air-breathing, plant-eating, excuse of a human, s**t-faced piece of whackados who they messed with… how dare they propel Becca to her final exhaust release and then chill at a frigging gas station… this dipshit muggle…”     Silver’s choice of words were soon cut off as we saw a figure emerge from the mini mart, running towards us, and frantically motioning us to take to our feet.    “I think he’s telling us to run…” I screamed at Silver, bouncing on my feet, and ready to take off in the opposite direction as adrenaline pumped in my system.    Blood drained from her face, and she turned pale white, as we both registered the monstrous figure that was behind the running boy. “Close your ears.” She ordered in a deathly tone. “What?”   “Euryale! Close your ears and run!” she screamed, and I didn’t need another invitation, my feet taking off, and my hands clamming down on my ears.   Seconds later, a soul piercing wail filled the air, and I staggered back, almost toppling to the ground. Despite my hands that were blocking the noise, the wail still made its way into my ear drums, and I screamed. It felt like my bones were being chewed, and my legs were blocks of lead, as I tried to move, but ended up crouched on the ground. Her wails filled the air around me, my own screams fueling her voice. Strong arms lifted me up, and I tried to pry my eyes open, but all I could see was darkness. I felt something being pushed into my ears, and the wails were replaced with the remix of Jump Up, Super Star! from Super Mario Odyssey. My eyes flew open, body suddenly full of energy, as I darted left, avoiding a destructive blow.    The creature was ugly. No doubt about that. Half of her was human and the other half… I had no idea. But I settled with bird-like, fish-like reptile. My gaze frantically searched for Silver, hoping she’s okay, and I spotted her a few meters, standing by the red sports car. I looked to my left and locked eyes with a lanky teenage boy. Part of his jet black hair covered his left eye, but his right eye glinted with amusement, and he pointed to my right.   I turned just in time to dodge yet another catastrophic blow from the monster. Rocks and dust flew everywhere. Suddenly, I remembered the screw driver in my pocket, and reached for it, circling back behind the monster. She seemed to be distracted by something. But then she noticed Silver. No.     “Hey! Look here you ugly, half human half bird-like, fish-like reptile! I’m very tasty! Tastier than the last human you had and clearly didn’t brush your teeth after!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, arms flailing about. That got her attention. I staggered back as she turned on me, and then took off tearing down the road. What the hell do I do now?! I could feel the earth shake as she slithered forward, gaining on me.    I stopped abruptly. It felt like something, or someone else had taken hold of my body as I turned back, facing the prancing monster. I breathed in, and then out. Time itself seemed to slow down as I glanced as the lanky boy who was now running to catch up with the monster, and Silver, who was frozen by the car, still clutching her ears. I tightened my grip on the screw.   The song was still playing in my ears, blocking out half of the wails of the monster. Jump with me, grab coins with me, oh yeah… I charged at Euryale with full speed. It’s time to jump up in the air… jump up don’t be scared! My feet lifted up into the air, along with my whole body, screw between my hands as I aimed for the center of her head.   A sickening c***k filled the air, and the monster dropped to the ground with a ‘thud’, quickly turning into black dust. What on Earth’s face just happened? I think I got that wrong.      With a slightly less noisy ‘thud’, I passed out where the monster once was.   *****     *****     *****      *****     *****     *****  A male and female voice reverberated in my ears and I tried to move my head, but it felt like lifting a ton of bricks. “Fat-face.” “Fatso” “Frog” “Freak” “Fan” “Fraud” “Frozen”   “Okay those aren’t even insults, they’re just words.” The male voice scoffed. “I don’t care, they start with the letter f, so they count.” The female voice snapped back.   I squinted my eyes at the light, and struggled to lift myself up from the bed. Silver’s concerned face swarm into view and I registered another form, a few feet away from the bed. I recognized him as the boy from the gas station.   “Where are we?” I croaked out, but it came out more like ‘verh verhf fi?’ “Where are we?” I repeated, after clearing my throat. Silver propped a pillow behind my back, to help support me.   “We’re in a hotel in Alverton. Leo drove us here, after you passed out. Killer move by the way, I never took you as a Kung-Fu master. I guess I was wrong…” she explained, going off point.   I dragged my gaze back to the black haired boy and he stared back at me. “How were you able to see the monster?” I questioned, my eyes narrowing at him in suspicion.    “Usually when a person saves your life, you say thank you. But nevertheless, you’re welcome…” he smirked, moving closer to the bed, and sitting cautiously on the edge.   “If it weren’t for Cali, we’d both be dead, you dumb ass.” Silver pointed out, and he raised a curious eyebrow.  “Cali? As in California?” he phrased, then laughed at his own stupid joke.    “No, Cali as in Caterisa Calista Zeus!” Silver corrected, getting angry. Leo looked taken aback. He stared at Silver, then back at me, then back at Silver. “Wait… you? You’re the bearer of the burden?! You’re Caterisa?!” “I thought Asians were supposed to be smart…” Silver muttered under her breath, getting up, and heading for the restroom.    “Yeah, I’m breaking stereotypes!” Leo shouted after her, and then turned to face my direction, disbelief still evident in his eyes. “Who are you?” I questioned again.
