Alisson heard them coming before she saw them. The sound of multiple feet crushing leaves and pressing down on the earth was a perfect balance of loud and silent. She felt Penelope perk up beside her; if she was in wolf form her tail would probably be wagging uncontrollably and she looked on eagerly, infected by her mother-in-law's excitement.
They stopped their march and split into two groups, one of the groups consisted of only two people who walked in their direction while the others followed a guide away from them, towards the guesthouse.
"Duncan, you coward! You gave the boy the headship so you can sit and play house?!" Came the booming voice that shook the air.
Alpha Kayden was a huge towering man that somehow managed to be larger than Duncan. He had a huge beard that stopped at his belly and took up most of the room on his face. His hair was short and cut down to his scalp and from what Alisson could see, he was a brown-haired man whose hair had begun to grey. His dark brown eyes had streaks of gold in them that flickered, like little gold bolts of lightning struck in his eyes when they appeared and disappeared.
"It's not my fault you're a selfish ball of hair and won't let your daughter take over " Duncan responded amusingly to his friend's well-meaning jab.
"When I'm cold and dead in the grave." He joked in a serious tone.
The two men exploded in laughter and grasped each other in a bone-crushing hug, they had been friends since they were children and their respective mates being best friends helped strengthen their bond.
Introductions were made and Alisson had the privilege of being picked up and crushed into Alpha Kayden's wide chest.
His daughter; Melody, was a year older than Alisson and extremely pretty. She had her father's peculiar eyes but unlike him, she was covered in freckles and had a bright red mane of hair that stuck out in every direction. There was a light laugh at the end of all her sentences and creases at the corner of her eyes, proving she was just as jovial as her parent.
The seven of them sat down for dinner and enjoyed the meal while having conversations and trading stories, this was Alisson's first time of meeting them but she knew that they would become extremely good friends.
The four of them left the three older wolves to catch up and returned to the home of the mated wolves. Henry had business to attend to in his office so he took along with him a reluctant and protesting Hunter, who looked for any excuse to avoid working.
Alisson and melody settled in the kitchen, talking about any and everything, and getting to know each other better.
Melody had made herself at home as she was barefoot, sitting cross-legged on their kitchen island. The redhead was expressive when she spoke, flinging her arms in the air and laughing loudly while Alisson rarely spoke as Melody took charge of the conversation and jumped from one topic to another, at a disorienting pace.
The brunette found the older woman's passion and energy surprisingly refreshing, it was exciting in the way a new set of pots excited her; which was a lot and she listened keenly to every word the woman said.
They got along so well that Alisson invited her to stay in their home and Melody agreed immediately. Her luggage was in Penelope's home and she had all her essentials in it so Alisson offered to go get it for her; she did not want her to stress herself after the journey she had just been on. Melody, of course, argued and tried to refuse but after much insistence, she agreed to it; albeit reluctantly with a small frown on her lips.
Hunter barreled down the stairs declaring he would escort Alisson there, with a frowning Henry following close behind and glaring at his smiling form. Knowing the beta, he would use the chance to escape getting work done, tonight and Henry was not pleased about it.
Alisson and Hunter left the house and strolled towards their destination at a leisurely pace, the moon was bright tonight and cast a warm glow on the ground, every once in a while a cloud would drift over it and hide its light from the earth. It was a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere.
They retrieved the luggage from the red-faced, laughing adults who were too caught up in their fun to do anything other than handing them the bag and slam the door shut in their faces.
When Alisson walked into the kitchen with a sleepy Hunter stumbling after her, they were confronted with the image of a shocked-looking Henry staring at an amused-looking Melody; who was standing directly in front of Henry. Alisson's question of what was going on was ignored in favour of Henry storming out of the room in a huff and Melody bursting out in laughter.
The other woman assured her it was nothing and requested her room with a tired and loud yawn. She was a hospitable host so she did not push for answers as she led her guest to the room she had prepared for her. Hunter would be taking the third room; which was practically his room with the amount of time he spent in their home.
Alisson got ready for bed and changed into her sleeping wear, choosing to ignore Henry who was brooding silently beside her.
Sleep did not come easily for her because her mind kept replaying the scene that had taken place in the kitchen and she wondered what had happened between the two when they were gone.
She knew the two were childhood friends because their parents were close and they were both future Alpha's of packs that shared history but it did not explain the close proximity she had walked in on.
She sighed tiredly and shook her head then began counting to get herself to fall asleep, a tactic that had worked many times and was working now. Just before she was pulled into the ocean of dreams, she felt an arm wrap around her waist and pull her into a warm body.
