Chapter 4I awoke abruptly, cocooned in the warmth of Cole’s arms because he was like an octopus in his sleep. I smiled and kissed his bicep, then shut my eyes again, ready to drift off again. But then the sound of the rain reached through my sleep-fuzzy brain. It sounded like a torrential downpour, beating the roof and the windows. And the moment the noise connected with my soul, I couldn’t ignore it. Not just because it was loud enough to keep me awake, but because it called to me. Gingerly, I slid out from underneath Cole so as not to wake him. When he pushed his face into my pillow and stayed asleep, I bent to kiss his head, then bee-lined for the backdoor.
