Chapter 4

"Daddy!" A little girl rushed over excitedly and hugged Gavin's leg tightly. He looked down and found it was the same girl he had seen at the airport. "Mommy, it's Daddy! Daddy's back!" The little girl clung to Gavin and called out to Evelyn. Gavin looked in the direction the girl was shouting, and he saw the woman he had missed for five years. Despite the time apart, Evelyn was still as beautiful as an angel, though she looked a bit weary. Their eyes met, and in that instant, a whirlwind of emotions swirled in their minds. "Susan, come back! He's not your father! Your father is dead!" Evelyn's voice was cold. Gavin was stunned as he looked at the little girl beside him. 'Could this girl be my child? Evelyn told her that her father was dead. It was clear how deeply she hated me,' he thought. "Evelyn, is she my daughter?" Gavin asked, his eyes filled with hope. "You don't deserve to know!" Evelyn replied without hesitation. Five years ago, they were forced into a marriage by the Reeve family to protect their reputation. Evelyn, being a wealthy heiress, valued her reputation and had no choice but to comply. But less than a month after their wedding, Gavin disappeared. Samantha told her that he had taken the five hundred thousand dollars Daniel had given him. To make matters worse, Evelyn found herself pregnant. Before the online rumors could settle, someone spread the rumor that Evelyn murdered Gavin. Her family accused her of tarnishing their image and demanded she hand over the Dynamics Group. Under immense pressure, Evelyn nearly broke down. For the sake of her unborn child, she endured it all. On the day she was imprisoned, the Reeve family seized control of the Dynamics Group, claiming she had brought shame to the family. Evelyn thought of those dark days, the countless nights she cried in secret, and the longing for her daughter while in prison. Her hatred for the man who had disappeared for five years grew even stronger. "You are unworthy." Evelyn stressed again. Evelyn's cold words cut Gavin deeply. She didn't scream or vent her anger; she simply told him that he didn't even deserve to know his daughter's name. Gavin realized that Evelyn had lost hope in him. He joined the military, facing death bravely in combat, all to be worthy of Evelyn. Now, even as a five-star general, he knew he could never make up for the lost five years. Evelyn had been falsely imprisoned, and their daughter was abandoned in an orphanage. It was unimaginable pain. No matter what he achieved, he could never erase Evelyn's trauma or repay the guilt of leaving his daughter to suffer. "Evelyn, I'm sorry!" Gavin choked up. "I don't need your apology." Evelyn didn't even want to look at him. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. I've come back to clear your name and set the record straight!" Gavin's voice was sincere and resolute. Samantha suddenly sneered. She looked at Gavin with disdain. "Where were you all this time? You probably saw the news and came back to scam money, huh? You took five hundred thousand from Daniel and said you'd never see Evelyn again." "I did take the money, but it was for..." Gavin trailed off. The money had been for his mother's medical treatment, but explaining it now seemed pointless. "You caused Evelyn to be slandered and humiliated for a mere five hundred thousand dollars. Gavin, are you even a man? You're just a jerk!" Daniel cursed. "But I paid you back the money the next day. For the past five years, I've been on the Middle East battlefield. I didn't know about the rumors, and I didn't conspire with anyone to humiliate Evelyn," Gavin explained. "Bullshit! You took the money and disappeared! You never paid it back," Daniel insisted. Gavin wanted to explain further, but seeing Evelyn's cold expression, he fell silent. "There's no need to waste time on him. Record a video as evidence. After that, he can leave!" Evelyn said coldly, reaching out to take Susan back. But Susan clung to Gavin, crying loudly, for fear that he would vanished again. "Daddy, don't go! I can't be without you! At the orphanage, they say I don't have a daddy, but I don't believe it. I have a daddy, and Daddy is back! Please don't leave me; I am scared without Daddy!" Seeing her daughter cry so heartbreakingly, Evelyn felt a pang of sorrow but still said firmly, "Susan, be a brave girl. He is a coward, and he doesn't deserve to be your father. You can live well without a daddy!" Evelyn's words pierced through Gavin's heart like a dagger. Tears welled up in his eyes when he saw his daughter so heartbroken. 'When my wife and daughter needed me the most, I hadn't been there. I'm not a responsible husband and father,' he told himself. Gavin squatted down, reached out to wipe the tears from Susan's face, and said gently, "Susan, your mother is right. I don't deserve to be your father. But I wish you health and happiness!" As he spoke, tears streamed down his cheeks. Even a battle-hardened hero like Gavin had a tender side in front of his family. "No, Daddy, don't leave me! I know you must have been on a secret mission, like a superhero," Susan said through her sobs. These words moved Gavin deeply. 'Maybe this is a kind of telepathy. Even though my daughter is still young, she knows her father is a hero!' he thought. "Does he even deserve to be called a hero?" Samantha sneered. "Susan, listen to Mommy, come back. Let Mommy hold you!" Evelyn said. "No, I want to stay with Daddy." Susan clung to Gavin's neck. "Let the little bastard stay with that loser!" Samantha scoffed. "Evelyn, you're going to marry Mr. Crane anyway. Isn't it better without this bastard?" Gavin's eyes turned bloodshot with rage as he stared at Samantha. 'Bastard? How dare she insult my daughter? Damn it!' he cursed inwardly. "My daughter is not a bastard! Apologize to her now!" Gavin demanded. Samantha was scared by Gavin's imposing manner. She trembled and retreated behind Evelyn. "Evelyn, I know you're kind-hearted, but this time, you need to listen to me. Gavin's child is indeed a bastard. Just let them go!" Evelyn scolded, "Mom, what are you talking about? Susan is my daughter. How can you insult her? I would rather die than let Susan leave me!" "It's okay; I don't mind having a stepdaughter!" Xavier spoke up at this moment. "Oh, you are such a nice person, Mr. Crane! Come on, Susan, call this gentleman 'Daddy'!" Samantha pointed at Xavier and said to Susan. Gavin's anger reached its peak. "What? You want my daughter to call someone else Daddy?" he questioned angrily. Samantha looked smug. "So what? This bastard should feel lucky that she can be Mr. Crane's daughter!" "If you dare call my daughter a bastard again, I will kill you!" Gavin roared.
