Wake up,” said a familiar voice in Beams’ ear. “Come on. I know you’re awake. Or are you just trying to avoid talking to me?” It took a moment for those words to enter Beams’ ear and filter into his brain. For whatever reason, his mind seemed to be running at half-speed. His body felt weak and sweaty, while his heart felt like it was beating faster than usual. His mouth was dry and his teeth felt like they were cracked into pieces.
