11. Sibling Date

____________________________ . . . "There is something very fishy about your behavior," Daphne said as she got off the bench, pointing a finger at Alan. "And I am going to find out what!" She picked up her back and walked off to the exit of the park. Alan laughed as he sat back on the bench watching her, continuing to eat his lunch. "But I am being extremely transparent here, darling. You are the one complicating things." Daphne looked back at him one last time before leaving the park premises and crossing the road to the company building. She didn't think others understood her and thought that she was being paranoid but getting involved with a colleague or even worse the boss could never do any good. And she had gone and slept with him before they were even introduced as boss and employee. She replayed all that happened in the span of time since they first met and thought of all the ways in which it could negatively affect her. She was stressing about him again but boy, would she take this stress over what her family put on her any day. "How was lunch?" There was something off about Simon's voice but Daphne was so caught up in her own thoughts to hear it. "Not good." Daphne huffed as she sat back down and quickly turned on her laptop. She was going to finish her work and quickly leave the place because she had to meet her brother as well. "In fact, my entire day has been a big bust!" Simon glanced over at her. Daphne usually did not talk. She shared very little information about herself. But that was not the case when she was stressed. She talked as if she had verbal diarrhea. She would talk and talk to no end about the most random things. It was the same as when they had met in the basement and she started talking about her dog. "Want an ear?" He asked. "No." She sighed, looking over at his desk to see that there was no coffee or milkshake on his table, and also coming to the realization that she had been dependent on him for far too long for her refreshments and she really needed to start paying him. He looked over at her when she didn't say anything after. She shrugged. "These are not problems that will get solved by just talking about them. I will actually have to do something about it to solve it." Simon nodded. "The Boss giving you trouble. I saw him with you at the park." Daphne turned fully to face him and as she did, he saw Alan pass by, his eyes on her. And he looked like someone had taken his parking spot. "If you were there, why didn't you come over?" "Well..." He simply shrugged. "How about we have lunch together from now on?" He asked and this time, he caught Sarah's eyes on him behind Daphne. She had a raised brow and a sly grin. "I don't mind." Daphne shrugged but then said. "Mind you, I like to think to myself during lunch. So you will be sitting next to a corpse." "I don't mind that." . . . "I don't like this new arrangement," Chloe said on the phone. "Milo really will forget about Aunt Daph at this rate. Are you sure you can't transfer out to Tucker Corp.?" "Why? So that you can abuse your power and make me babysit Mimu so that you and Niall can... I don't want to say it out loud." "You are so mean!" Chloe laughed. "That's not all we do, you know. We also-" "La la la la, I don't wanna hear it!" "Daph, you are so mean!" Daphne was glad that Nicole had yet to fill Chloe in on what was happening in Daphne's life because if it wasn't so, Chloe would have called much earlier and this would not have been the direction in which the conversation would have been going. And with what was awaiting her, she did not have the energy for anything else. "Hey, why don't you come over?" She asked. "We will call Nick over too. Niall has a business dinner and Milo misses you. Let's have some fun!" "Can't. Dylan's visiting." Daphne sighed. "Dylan who?" Chloe wanted to confirm. She didn't exactly know any other significant Dylan in Daphne's life but there could as well be one considering the other option was her megalomaniac brother whom Daphne loved but would rather gladly avoid. "The one and only Dylan Jameson Prescott." Daphne sighed, letting Maya have one, just one, popcorn. "What is he doing here?" Chloe asked. "Well, he said he is here on business but obviously mother and father have ordered an intervention to make me see sense." She sighed as she finally got up from her couch. She needed to call her brother. She could not push it away for much longer anyway so might as well get it over with. "I think you should just tell them of your plan. They will get off your back once they know that you are going back in less than a year." "Someone seems to be in a hurry to send me off." Daphne chuckled. "Don't say that." Chloe's voice was small when she uttered those words. And the best friends stayed silent for a good minute after that, not knowing what to say. But their silent understanding was disrupted by the blood-curdling screams of Daphne's sweet little Mimu. "He takes after you," Daphne stated as she listened to her best friend's footsteps as she hurried to the kid's room. "Oh come on!" She groaned. "What happened?" Daphne asked. "Blow out! And that too when Niall isn't home!" Daphne burst out laughing and sat back down on the couch. "You deal with that while I deal with my brother." Whatever Chloe was saying was incoherent so Daphne hung up anyway. She took a deep breath before finding the will to call her dear brother. He picked up almost immediately. "Did you forget about me or are you just clocking out of work?" He asked. No hey. No hello. "I decided to come take a bath and stuff. The day was pretty hard on me." She swallowed the part where her problem was him. "Also, are you sure we should meet in person? I might have dog hair on me." "I will take some antihistamines and bring along an Epipen. Don't you dare worry about me!" Dylan's words dripped with sarcasm as he said the last part as if he believed that there was no way she could be actually worried about him. Daphne realized that her brother had recovered from the flustered state that she had left him in the morning. And so she could not use that at dinner today. She would have to come up with something else. "So, did you settle in at Paramount?" She asked. "Yeah, I did. They were able to hook me up with a new room." He sounded tired. And Daphne felt the teeniest bit bad for her brother. It was obvious that he had come here on business and he must have run around the whole day with that and the room trouble and everything and yet, due to the familial pressure, he had had to find some time to talk to his sister. "So I will meet you at the restaurant there?" She asked. "Yeah." He sighed. "I have made a reservation there." Daphne nodded as if he was right in front of her and said a quick bye before hanging up and going to get ready for dinner. She knew her brother was going to be all suited up so she did not want to look underdressed so she went with a long-sleeved rusty rose maxi dress that stopped just above her angles and she wore rose-gold heels and a bracelet. "I don't dress up this much for even my dates." She rolled her eyes as she put her hair up in a side bun. "But if I don't do it, then he might think that I am not even putting any effort into a meet-up with him." "Hail Daisy and Jonathan Prescott for ruining even the sibling bonds for the sake of business!" She exclaimed into the air after she was all ready. Maya looked up at her from the bed and seemed ready to jump on her. "Down kiddo, not today!" She quickly grabbed her white purse and phone and car keys and made her way out. . . . Daphne walked into the restaurant in a hurry, bumping into a man who smelled all too familiar but she was just too much of in a rush to care. She yelled a sorry for her back and made her way to the front desk. "Reservation for Dylan Prescott." She quickly said. The attendant quickly ushered to the already waiting Dylan who, as she approached, was looking down at the golden analog watch that their grandfather had gifted him when he first became an employee at the Prescott firm. "Brother." She informed him of her presence and he was immediately on his feet, and if Daphne didn't know any better, she would have thought that her brother was actually very excited to see him. "You look lovely, my sister." He pressed his lips to her temple as he embraced her. Daphne shrugged as she pulled back. "Oh well, I try." Dylan gave her a tight smile as the two of them took their seats and the attendant reappeared with two menus. "We will have the chef's special. Except replace the crab with steak on her plate." Dylan took over immediately and though she rolled her eyes, Daphne let him have it. He always did this and there was no way to change it. "And we will have a bottle of your finest red wine." "Aren't you going a little bit rowdy?" Daphne chuckled as the attendant walked away. "A whole bottle of wine and all?" "The best wines come by the bottle." Dylan shrugged. Daphne nodded. He had a point. "How have you been?" He asked. Daphne raised a brow at her brother. She was well versed with how he and the rest of her family worked and none of them were particularly interested in how the others were doing personally except for Darren and Daphne who only kept tabs on each other's lives. "I am under a lot of stress right now." She thought that she would try to be honest with him, and see how that would turn out. "Work?" "Personal life." She shrugged. "And because I am so involved in my work, I could say that it is affecting work as well." That was as honest as she would get to her oldest brother. "I hear there was a takeover?" "Yeah, it sucks when your boss is not someone you can boss around." She grinned. Which he did not return. "Maybe you should try. Maybe he will let you boss him around." . . . __________________________________
