The door opened and Clara came in, dropping something into Livy’s hand before turning to leave. I wondered what it could be, but didn’t have to wonder long. Livy took my hand and put the item into it, squeezing my fingers closed around it. It took a moment before I registered the burning sensation. I tried to pull away, tried to get it off of me. She held my hand closed and looked into my eyes. “This is silver. You would feel this, every day, every night. Even when you’re sleeping, you aren’t free of this pain. It’s your constant companion. No wolf. Nothing feels good, tastes good, smells good. And, if they make it like mine, you will have no choice, but to obey any human who gives you a command.
