The town"s main street was broad, lined with offices and stores, together with a smattering of hotels, saloons and various other eating-places. Side streets branched off in all directions and set back a little, on a small premonitory, was a sizeable church, its tower plainly seen from where Newhart and Mason sat, taking it all in. “What do you think?” asked Newhart, sagging with the heat. “I don"t know,” said Mason cautiously, scanning the many buildings for any signs of life. There didn"t appear to be much. Tied up at the occasional hitching rail, a tired-looking mule or bedraggled horse, farther down, broken carts and wagons, a stack of shattered crates, and deep ruts in the roadway proclaiming the coming and going of many horse drawn vehicles.
