"Oh, why did you throw it away? Now you don't have any panties left!!"
"Well, it was wet... You know that when a girl's panties are wet, her flower will start to smell bad!!!"
"Are you okay like that? Let's go to the market and buy you some new panties."
We took a shortcut through the tall grass. It was already dark, and only the streetlights illuminated the path. While walking through the grass, we joked about our little wrestling match earlier in the abandoned house.
"I couldn't even see your flower, it was too dark!!!"
"Hahaha!! Want to see it?"
"Of course!!"
"But first, tell me you love me."
"I love you."
"Is that true? You're not just going to spread rumors about this and then act like nothing happened?"
"You don't have to do anything if you're unsure about me. But as for me, I already love you."
"I don't do anything at home. My life was so boring until you came along. You made me happy, you know."

After those lines, the two of them snuck into the abandoned guardhouse, lit by a nearby streetlight. They barely hid themselves. Kate stood, leaning against a waist-high wall, lifted her skirt in front, and showed Tom her flower. It had a small tuft of fine hair, like a cat's fur. Tom playfully poked at Kate's flower.
"You're such an i***t!!"
"You like it, though."
"Dummy, it hurts too..."
Before they reached the market, Kate already knew Tom's nickname. Tom was the older brother of her classmate, Arcy. As they walked, they came up with a call sign or pet name, or a sign of endearment. Back then, it was common to call each other "Mahal" or "Lalabs." They went to Robinson's.
Inside the mall:
"Mahal, hurry up, it's so cold! I'm shivering!"
"Get me some napkins too."

She fixed herself up in the toilet. We didn't stay long inside, and I gave her a ride on my bike back home.
When we got home, only my brother was there, and Kate's classmates were gone.
"Where have you been?" my brother asked with a furrowed brow.
"We took a stroll, bro. She wanted to learn how to bike."
"Where did you go? Jeric knows how to commute. Take Kate to school; it's close by."
It seemed my brother had something else to remind me of, but I just brushed my teeth and had a drink. Kate did the same, and you could see the tiredness from all the running around.
"Mahal, is Arcy mad?" Kate whispered to me, but my brother overheard.
"Alright, bro, I'll take Kate."
My brother didn't say anything.
....
During the trip, Kate and I were both worried because of my brother's reaction. We didn't talk much, but we held hands almost the whole way. From the jeep to Monumento, then another jeep to Manuguit, and a bit of walking.
"Mahal, I'm good here. I'm just past the market."
"When will we see each other again?" I asked Kate.
"Well, it's vacation time. Maybe next school year, because I'll be spending the break in the province."
"Next school year, I'm still at the same school. You graduated from there, right?" I just let her talk. Back then, there was no f*******:, no cellphones. It was rare for students to have a cellphone, even a Nokia 5110. I didn't even have one, and I was about to go to college!!!
"Let's just meet in the second week of June," Kate said.
"What date in June?"
"I don't know, just the second week."
This was our first official date as a couple, but it felt like our relationship was already being tested. Forget the age and distance; our time didn't match.
I went home with a heavy heart. It felt like a breakup. Each sigh felt like the end.
At home, I found my brother playing the guitar in the yard.
"Did you take Kate home?" my brother immediately asked.
"Yeah, but only to 7-11."
"What did you do with Kate? Where did you go earlier? Jeric is courting her."
"I didn't do anything with Kate. She was showing interest, but I didn't go for it!!" I lied. Nothing good would come from the truth now.
"Damn it, she called you 'Mahal'? I heard it loud and clear; my ears aren't that weak."
"It's nothing!! Kate's just playful; if you got to know her, she's frank, mischievous, playful..."
My brother didn't say anything and just shook his head. What I said at the end didn't help.
"Oh, do you like Kate? Just tell me, and we won't argue about it. I didn't do anything with your Kate!!"
My brother didn't say anything, as if shocked. I also worried that maybe he did like Kate. I didn't continue the conversation. I went straight to my room and slept.
