When the tricycle made a turn at the corner near the wide road, we noticed another tricycle tailing us with two passengers on board. After a few more meters of bumpy road, we arrived at Jennifer's stone house. Jennifer's family is quite well-off. Their yard is probably around 500 sqm, with a 3-bedroom bungalow that’s roughly 100 sqm in floor area. Their fence is made of bamboo and barbed wire, with the gate being the only part made of steel and stone. It seemed like we were arriving at an empty house. The entire place was dark, and the only light was from the tricycle’s headlamp, casting eerie shadows all around.
"Manong, here's the fare. Chris, push the gate as soon as we get off. Hey, Cons and his crew are following us, oh no!"
"Yeah... they’ve been tailing us."
I did as told, pushing the gate open, and Jennifer swiftly followed me inside. As soon as Jennifer locked the gate, she dashed to the front of the house to switch on the lights.
"What are you doing here, Cons? Why are you following us?" Jennifer's voice was frantic.
Luckily, the tricycle driver sensed the tension and potential threat from the tricycle following us.
"Jennifer, what's going on here? Are these people bothering you?" Manong asked.
"I don't know what's up with them. We went to PSU to avoid them, that’s why we took your tricycle!"
"Cons, what’s your problem?" I felt I needed to confront this weirdo.
"Why are you with Jennifer, you ugly guy!" Cons retorted.
"Oh yeah, sure, you're the handsome one... but why am I the one she’s with?" I shot back at this i***t.
He couldn't respond and started mumbling in his language, which I couldn't understand.
"Do you like Jennifer or something?"
He couldn't give a straight answer and kept taunting me in his language, which I still didn’t understand.
"Why don't you just tell her you like her? Why don't you court her? You keep insulting me, and I don’t even get what you're saying!"
"If you're a real man, court Jennifer! Stop picking on me to show off to her!"
Cons fell silent.
At my age, I know I can be a bit psychotic. I know how to play with people’s egos. Jennifer was just quiet, as if she was seeing this side of me for the first time. The tricycle driver still hadn’t left.
"Fer, go inside. I’ll leave soon so there won’t be any trouble. I’m just going to Cempelco to see Ma’am Donaldo."
I made sure to mention my aunt's name because I knew she was the adviser of the tricycle boy with Cons and Robert.
"How are you related to Ma’am Donaldo?"
"She’s my aunt," I replied loudly.
"Cons, if you have nothing more to say, just leave." Cons had no choice because his friends now knew they’d be in deep trouble on Monday if my aunt heard about this.
Once the two tricycles left, we went inside the house. As soon as we were in, I noticed Jennifer moving quickly, attending to household chores. She was sweeping, preparing rice, and filling the pitchers with water from the fridge. Jennifer was impressive, moving like a seasoned homemaker. She hadn’t even changed out of her uniform yet.
