5 - An enemy

“I don’t play secrets. I believe you are not a wizard.” I tilted my head in response, squinting my eyes while trying to see through the magic that was hiding his true looks and identity. Something about him just seemed a bit too fuzzy. As if it was meddling with my brain, if I looked away, I couldn’t remember what he looked like. There was definitely some spell at play here. Moreover, he had to have quite some guts to come to this place with a disguising spell cast on him. “What makes you think so?” He came closer to me and leaned against the railing right next to me. He then turned his gaze into the garden. Even though a disguise spell was cast on him, his features were still too prominent. His well-defined jawline, the neck that made me want to watch him swallow, so I could see his Adam's apple move. The long eyelashes that almost even I could be jealous of and his lips that looked plump yet not too overwhelming. Suddenly, I saw his lips parting into a big smile. “Something amiss?” He caught me staring. “Do you really want me to stop the spell that is cast on you?” I dared him. If he was one of our enemies, this would be a very uncomfortable conversation and a meeting in one. But at the same time, it could save me from having to get engaged to one of those useless fools that were still in the ballroom. Luckily, our society was based on many different rules. And when one wizard was seen conversing with a witch, others weren’t allowed to butt in according to our etiquette. Unless they were the witch’s family. If someone spoke to me out of turn, I could make this into a huge issue and slip away. Make this guy my scapegoat. Or if the situation turned out a certain way, I could even let myself get kidnapped just to leave this place. I wouldn’t have to get engaged today, which would delay this thing and my marriage in general. In fact, it was the best I could do right now. It was my hope of living a good life for a tiny bit longer. I could get more time to figure everything out. Or run away. Or just get kidnapped and then run away, buy one get one free package. “Well, do you dare to?” He was still smiling, his face now very close to mine. Feeling his warm breath on my face made me hesitate for a while. He smelled like summer, the smell you get from pine forest and seawater mixed with the sweetest peach I ever smelled and ate. I quickly snapped out of it. I had to look like an i***t who was sniffing a stranger as if I was a dog. I took a step away from him and raised my right hand, gently lifting my wrist with fingers down and then dropping it as if writing a straight line from top to bottom. He coughed a few times as the dust was lifting off of him. A guy in a tight tuxedo showed up, his chest wide and full, as well as his arms and legs. He was even taller than any other wizard I had ever seen. His grayish purple eyes were fully exposed as his hairstyle kept his raven hair tidy to the back. His broad shoulders made me think about how it would feel if he embraced me. I caught myself swallowing a bigger amount of saliva. My body was reacting on its own, almost burning. A clicking sound made me snap back the moment another smell hit me. “You’re a werewolf.” I gasped. “Shh, not so loud!” He put his index finger on his lips while smiling again. He was either crazy or he didn’t have any idea about what he had done by sneaking up to the Floating Island of Witches. Using him to escape my fate would be the worst. It would make the conflict between our races burn up. If he got caught here it would be like pouring oil into an already huge fire. My plan was in ruins. I had to quickly come up with something else. I started pacing. “What… What are you doing here? This won’t end up well! There’s an ongoing conflict between us! What did you think of even coming here?! What if they make it that you were trying to assassinate the future queen?!” I was quietly hissing at him, quickly shifting my eyes from the closed glass door back to him. If he was caught here, that would turn out into a disaster for our people as well as his. An all-out war would break out! “Well, I had to-” The door opened. “Werewolf! Enemy!” I turned my head to see who was calling everyone so loudly. I gasped. A gush of wind full of dog smell hit my face as the guy that was standing next to me just a moment ago disappeared into the garden, his clothes ripped apart by a giant wolf that he had quickly turned into. And then he went, jumped down the edge of our floating island down to earth. “Catch that bastard!” I quickly snapped my fingers, making sure the wizard who had noticed us got affected by the bamboozling spell. I shouldn’t be caught casually conversing with a werewolf. I turned around, gazing into the garden. Ah, there goes my faint glimpse of hope of getting out of this. I hung my head and took a shaky breath. I put my hopes too high.
