6. Vicky and Addy

If you keep yourself locked up in your room, you will not have another meal- Your charming future husband. Heavens, he’s so full of s.hit. I roll my eyes and squeeze the letter into an irregular ball before tossing it into the trash can. I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking when I decided to marry this arrogant piece of work. “You didn’t even let me see the letter,” Marina giggles, watching me curiously. “It was nothing,” I say with a scowl that proves otherwise. “The Alpha King has asked us to dine with him for breakfast. That is all,” Marina raises her eyebrows skeptically but shrugs, deciding that the letter must not hold any true importance. I take her hand and we walk to the dining room, a small smile playing at my lips when I catch the child like wonder of her eyes as they hover around the beautiful furnishings of The Alpha King’s residence. The dining room is just like any other room in the palace, with silver furnishings, white and black tapestries and a large white wood table that can seat approximately Twenty people. The Alpha King sits at the head of the table, deep in conversation with the duchess that all but called me a charity case yesterday. I ignore my sour emotions and walk towards the table, clutching Marina’s hand protectively. It’s a stupid thing to think I’m protecting her from disrespect but I don’t want her to go through the same thing that I went through with that arrogant Duchess. “Good morning, your majesty, duchess,” Marina and I greet the faces we know on the table. The Duchess’s gray eyes slice to mine and she tilts her head slightly to the side, her eyes moving as well. At first I don’t catch on, but I soon realize that she wants me to sit beside the Alpha King. Just great. Sending Marina an apologetic glance, I saunter towards the King’s side, purposefully ignoring his blatant silver gaze on my face. However, King Cardan is an unforgiving man. He would do well to remind me of that much later. The door of the dining room kicks back and some nobles come pouring in, their clothes and appearance as flashy as anything can be. However, one of the werewolves have stopped in his tracks, sniffing the air aggressively. He is a handsome and a largely built brown haired man with charming hazel eyes. His eyes have turned into soulless pits of black and his fangs extend, showing that his wolf is on the surface. “Beta,” The King tenses with a frown, watching his second in command lose it. Everyone is watching in shock and silence when suddenly, he lets out a low growl and starts marching towards Marina. Marina is pale in her seat and my heart is thudding in my chest, fear of the unknown making me over protective. I try to jump to my feet and drag her away from the unwarranted wrath of the noble but King Cardan grabs my hand and stops me from moving. I want to explode on him at the spot, yell at him for letting my friend get hurt when suddenly, the noble grabs her and growls something that makes the color drain out of my face. “Mine!” Marina’s eyes go wide and she turns towards me in panic, writhing uncertainly against the noble. Her father would be so thrilled to hear that she is mates with a Beta, the second most important man in the Greater Moon Kingdom. “She is human, Nicolai. Take her to a private balcony and explain,” King Cardan suggests. “I-I understand,” she squeaks, pressing a hand to the bicep of the possessive werewolf that is burrowing into her neck. On noticing her hand on his bicep, he relaxes and moves back. Marina puts her small hand in his and he takes it with a vibrant smile and before long, they leave the dining room. I can only hope that the Beta is a better man than The Alpha King. “Seems like we have another wedding to plan,” a young, female noble beams before sauntering towards The King. “Your majesty,” she smiles, taking his hand and pressing a fleeting kiss to his signet ring. I watch the exchange curiously. “Is this the human princess?” She turns towards me, her sweet smile changing into a condescending sneer. I have to look at my meal before I roll my eyes. “Yes, my wife to be,” The King replies. The frown that adorns her features tells me she despises me. “And you are? I have been unable to make your acquaintance,” I say as politely as I can. “The next Duchess of Silverdale, Victoria George. The Alpha’s first daughter of The Strongest pack right after The King’s pack,” she says proudly, trying to puff her chest when all she does is push her breasts into the King’s face. Oh, I soon realize as I register the competitiveness in her stance. This Lady will be the next Queen of The Greater Moon Kingdom. My confirmation is the fact that she slips into the chair that is by the right hand side of The King. What an irony. It looks like a convenient case of His Mate and His Mistress, even when I am going to marry him. “Did you have a good night rest, My King?” She bats her eyelashes prettily, pretending to smoothen her dress when she is all but dragging it down to reveal more cleavage. I almost laugh at her desperation. What an insecure woman, considering that just a few days ago The Alpha King had a vast harem that even foreigners from the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe are aware of. “I did Vicky, thank you,” he murmurs, ignoring her existence by focusing on the meal in front of him. Victoria beams at the endearment he tosses at her and brushes a hand through her strawberry blonde hair. “How long have you been here, Princess Adele?” She turns her attention right back to me. But Adele is not my name, so I ignore her and take a bite at my steaming oats. Tension rolls through the entire dining room and shushes the nobles. I have to bite back my mischievous smile as I continue eating my food. When I raise my head, I find Victoria glaring down at me with such animosity that can divide a bull in two. “I was speaking to you, Princess,” she snarls at me, her lips curling obstinately. “Me?” I squeak, fluttering my eyelashes. Even though I haven’t exactly been able to convince the Alpha King that I am a harmless doll, it wouldn’t hurt to make myself appear as one in front of the other nobles. “Yes, Princess Adele,” she tries to annoy me again by mispronouncing my name. “I think you are very much aware what her name is, Lady Victoria,” The Duchess of Richmond glares at her disapprovingly. “If I had known you were speaking to me, I would have answered you,” I say in my meekest tone possible. “Everyone calls me Adeline- well except for his majesty that calls me Addy,” I add, deciding that I really do need to annoy her. Her face falls when she realizes she is not the only person that the King has given a nickname to. May I never ever be caught trying so hard to gain the king’s attention. “I expect you to know everyone’s name and pronounce it accordingly Victoria,” The King’s voice is cold and unforgiving, silver eyes just as hard. “The Princess shall be my wife. The breakfast table is for eating, not picky petty fights,” And with that, Victoria’s mouth is sealed shut. But I can still see her mind working behind those gray eyes of hers. “I apologize,” she says sweetly, almost in a breathy sigh that has me worried she might faint. “We shall both be your wives, after all. We should definitely get along, don’t you think so, Princess Adeline?” She smiles deviously. I know she thinks that I am unaware that the King shall also marry her, so she wants to see my expression fall. I would give her exactly what she wants, but with a little bit of spice. “You will also be his wife?” My expression brightens, much to her shock. “That is amazing! When are you getting married? We can be best friends and oh, you know what? We can even be pregnant together!” A loud snort takes away the attention from Victoria and I. “I am sorry,” a male voice says, his face pink with mortification at his inability to control his laughter. “I just- I didn’t expect it,” he tries to excuse himself with a cough that sounds quite like a laugh. God, Marina is truly missing out. We would have laughed at all this madness in my bedroom. “I am not sure that we can be best friends. Werewolves and humans are not the best pair but I suppose we can try,” a fake smile is plastered across her Ruby red lips. On the inside, I can see she is seething and might just reach around the table and slap me. “Oh they are not?” I try to blink innocently. “But wolves are so big and fluffy! Why can’t humans be friends with wolves? Your canine cousins dogs get along with us and if they can, why can’t us? Did you know that my mother was also a were-“ My voice is cut off as low laughters ring across the dining table. Everyone’s face is light with amusement except for the duchess and The King, not to forget Victoria’s face that is bright red with rage. “Adeline,” The King inclines his head towards me, a small frown on his face. “Oh I apologize,” I bow my head to him. “I just seem to get so carried away when the opportunity to make a new friend presents itself to me,” I aim so hard for a blush and when Victoria’s face hardens, I can tell I have succeeded. Playing a fool is so fun. Marina and The Beta reappear in the dining room. I notice that my friend has a vibrant flush on her cheeks. “Lady Marina and I shall get married in a month,” he announces with a smile, leading her to his seat directly parallel to the King’s chair. Marina sits herself beside him. “Splendid,” The King says simply, nodding in approval at Marina. I cast a worried gaze at her. We need to discuss at length as soon as I am free. The King interrupts my worried staring by lifting one of my hands. “Your majesty?” I squeak, turning towards him. But on the inside, I am fuming positively. What does he possibly want with my hand? My jaw falls open when The King strips away my glove and reveals my bare hand to everyone. Slowly, he picks a red velvet box and unboxes a gigantic ring from the interior, one that hushes the chattering nobles. The band is made with beautiful vines that sprout silver leaves on the top. In the midst of the silver leaves is a beautiful oval turquoise sapphire gem, adorned by small diamonds that sit like a crown over it. “Do you like it?” He asks, slipping it into my ring finger. “It is beautiful,” I simply say, not wanting to express my discomfort. “Good,” The King says, voice detached. “I’m hoping that you can admire it enough to keep your mouth shut,” I have to look away before I glare at him and undo my hard work at playing the meek, foolish Princess. “We have a routine, Princess Adeline,” The Duchess of Richmond says. “Immediately after breakfast, you will come with me for your wedding preparations,” My eyes dart towards Marina and The Duchess lets out a sigh. “Alright, your friend can come with you,” And that puts me at ease for the time being. When Marina and I are alone after Breakfast, Victoria saunters towards us, her chin high and her eyes condescending. “Look here, Human Princess,” she hisses. “You will be nothing but a breeding mare for The King and pop out his children while I play politics and be Queen. This is why we can never be friends. You are far beneath my station,” she hisses. Before I can even lose my self control and slap her odious face, she turns around and slithers away. I almost hoped at making her an ally, but now I see she is nothing but a social climber. This was why she cared nothing for the harem. Those women had no chance at being Queen. But because of my high rank, she feels threatened by me. I stare at her retreating figure for a long time, gripping Marina’s hand so that I don’t do something rash. Then I decide that I will do everything in my power to stop her from being Queen. “You’re playing a dangerous game Ada,” Marina frowns, seeing the determined set of my eyebrows. “I’ve always known,” Is all I can reply. ********* Liking my new work so far?
