KIARA'S P.O.V
I descended the stairs, wearing a ripped jeans and black top with white sneakers. I headed towards the kitchen where Ellen was preparing breakfast.
Ellen was my guardian; a petite woman; nice, kind and beautiful.
I sat at the table in a corner of the kitchen. "Hey Ellen," I greeted.
"Hey sweetie," Ellen said as she flashed me a smile. She passed a plate containing slices of bread that had honey spread in layers on top.
"Thanks."
"Ready for school?" She asked as she sat across me and began to eat her breakfast.
I rolled my eyes. "No," I replied honestly. "It's been a while I went to school. Nearly two years now." For the past two years, I had been homeschooled by special female teachers. Ellen didn't want me exposed to the world until she was sure I had healed and was stronger emotionally.
"Well, I think you will do great. Remember, it's not just any normal school. It's for magical students like yourself," She said as if that was supposed to make me feel better.
"Where is Jamie?" Jamie was Ellen's adopted sixteen-year old son.
"Off to school."
"I should be on my way," I said as I stood.
"Are you sure you don't want me to drop you off? Why don't you wait for me to get ready for work so I can take you? You...."
"We already talked about this, Ellen. I'm fine and I can manage on my own."
"I know but...."
"No buts." I slung my bag across my shoulder. "Bye Ellen," I said leaning down to kiss her cheeks.
"Bye honey. I love you," she called after me as I headed towards the door.
"Love you too, Ellen," I shouted back. I walked towards the convertible that Ellen gifted me early this year. Sighing, I got into the car, ignited the engine and drove out of the compound.
About thirty minutes later, I was in front of the school. Right at the gate, the name - IVY MAGICAL SCHOOL- was boldly staring at me. I took a deep breath and drove into the school's parking lot. I parked my car properly and carefully climbed out, not forgetting to lock the doors. I stared around, hoping I was attracting zero percent of the school's population. Students walked around, some alone, some in groups, some chattering and laughing loudly.
Ivy Magical Schools wasn't just any school. It was mainly for magical students who had supernatural powers and needed to learn how to control and use them. Don't ask me how I developed powers or why am I here. I don't know either and I can't explain. All I knew was that I woke up one morning to discover that I had multiple powers and here I am.
Taking a deep breath, I walked into the school building and suddenly, I halted. I took a casual look around and instantly became confused. Woah! Wait a minute, I was supposed to find the secretary's office first, right? But how could I find it? I slapped my forehead lightly. Gosh! This was why I hated been a new student.
"Hi there," someone sqeauked behind me.
I turned and saw a short, plump girl with glasses and vibrant red hair looking at me. She had in her hands a book that read 'SCIENCE MADE EASY.' Okay, she is a nerd.
I narrowed my eyes at her. "And who are you?" I asked harshly.
She shifted uncomfortably from one foot to another. "My name is Laura-Rose," she said.
I was immediately suspicious. That she bore one of my aunt's names wasn't helping matters either. I eyed her suspiciously. "So?"
"You seem lost and confused," she said timidly. "Are you new? Do you need any help?"
Did she just call me lost and confused? It made me mad and I couldn't even fathom why. "I don't need any help. So, f**k off," I said angrily and walked away.
I didn't know if I was going in the right or wrong direction but I was too mad to care. I wasn't going to take help from someone who saw me as 'lost and confused.' I also hated asking for help or directions from people, so, I remained content with going the wrong way. Yeah, super crazy.
For twenty minutes, I walked aimlessly, tugging my hair as I couldn’t find the secretary’s office. I was pretty sure that I looked like a mad woman because some students kept sending puzzled glances my way, making me scowl at them.
Suddenly, a tall brunette appeared in front of me. She was dressed in a blue gown. She was my height which made me annoyed a little bit. I like being taller than people. It gave me a feeling of superiority over them.
“Hi,” the brunette said.
“And how may I help you?” I asked harshly.
“I think you are the one in need of my help,” she replied in a calm tone. “I’m Zuma,” she introduced herself, stretching out her hand for a shake.
“I hate touching people,” I said bluntly. “And what kind of name is Zuma by the way?”
She slowly dropped her hand. “And you are Kiara Jones,” she said, ignoring my jibes at her name.
I gave her a wary look. “How did you know my name?”
“Because I am your assigned guide.”
“And how do you know what I look like?” I asked, still suspicious.
“Oh, I don’t know. But I have powers that can lead me to you and also indicate who I’m looking for,” she said.
“That’s creepy.”
She gave me an offended look. “Whatever. Let me lead you to the secretary’s office.”
I was still wary of her but I desperately needed help. Since she was offering it, it would look stupid to reject her offer. Plus, she called herself my guide, so it won’t hurt to follow her right?
“Like I said earlier, I’m Zuma and I’m seventeen,” she said as we walked. “I’m an elf.”
“Interesting. That explains the long, pointed and horrid looking ears,” I mocked.
“They are not horrid looking. They are cute!”
I rolled my eyes. “And who told you that? Your boyfriend, I suppose.”
“You know what? Just stop talking and walk faster,” she snapped.
“Works for me,” I said with a smug smile.
About five minutes later, she led me to the secretary’s office. She opened the door. A woman dressed in trousers suit and jacket was seated at the table. We stepped inside, closing the door behind us.
“Hey Kathy,” Zuma greeted the woman with a smile.
She raised her head and smiled. “Hey Zuma.” She looked at me. “And you must be Kiara Jones.”
“That’s right.”
“I’m Kathy, the secretary you’ve been looking for minutes ago,” she said with a teasing smile.
How did she know I was looking for her? Seriously, could this school get any creepier?
“So what kind of magical creature are you?” Kathy inquired.
“I don’t know,” I replied curtly.
“What do you mean?” she asked and I shrugged my shoulders. She brought out a file that I assumed to be mine. She flipped through it, chasing her fingers across some words as she read. “Weird,” she said more to herself than to us. “It says here that you don’t know your specie but you have a long list of powers. Interesting.” She raised her head. “Zuma take her to the inner room and let her be scanned. Bring the results back to me.”
“Sure,” Zuma said. “Come with me,” she said, motioning to me. I rolled my eyes but followed her anyway.
The inner room was adjoined to Kathy’s office. Inside the inner room, there were five similar and complicated looking machines.
“What are these machines for?” I asked.
“They scan us and tell us our powers and the kind of magical creature or specie we are. They are also connected to the printer so the result can be printed and stored for documentation.”
“So are they magically or technologically induced?” I asked again.
“Both.”
“I see.”
“Put your feet on it,” she instructed.
I obeyed and the machine beeped instantly. “Scanning,” the machine said in its robotic voice. I glanced up at the screen and saw a black and white figure of my self. “Scanning powers,” it said again and proceeded to list a number of powers: glowing fingers, hot and burning skin when angry, hypnotizing powers, electric powers, shielding powers.
Then at the bottom, something was written in red- WARNING: HUMAN.
I tilted my head towards Zuma and realized that she was staring at the screen, her lips parted in awe. “Zuma?”
She turned to me. “Who the hell are you?!” she exclaimed.
“Excuse me?”
“Girl, look at you! You have the combination of both fairies and elves' powers. And to top it all, you are human! Woah!”
I shrugged, still not getting why she was so overexcited. “Just print this stuff and let’s get out of here.” She did as I said and we headed back to Kathy’s office.
Zuma threw the door open, announcing excitedly, “Kathy, you won’t believe this, she’s……” Her voice trailed off as she stared at the guy who was in front of Kathy. He wasn’t there before we left, so he must have come in while we were in the inner room. Then, she suddenly screamed, “Oh my God! Ivan!!!”
What’s wrong with her?
Kathy rolled her eyes while this Ivan just flashed her a smile. “Ivan, you should come and meet me later in the afternoon,” Kathy said to the guy. “I think someone is about to melt from your hotness,” she teased.
Ivan flashed a smile at us and I scowled at him. He frowned but turned to Kathy. “Sure,” he said to her and walked out of her office.
“Even his voice is sexy,” Zuma said, fanning herself dramatically with her hand.
Kathy rolled her eyes. “Just pass me the result,” she said, snatching the paper from Zuma. She read it and her eyes went wide. She stared at me. “Wow, you are human?! And you have the powers of an elf and fairy combined?!”
I stared at her, confused. “Can someone just explain whatever this is?”
“You don’t fit into any magical creature yet.” She pondered on it for a while. “Okay, here is what you will do. Zuma, you will take her to the Diamonds. She is a Diamond for now.”
“Really?!” Zuma exclaimed.
I just stared at them. Diamonds? What the hell was that?!
