Ralph takes a step forward, heaving a sigh.
“Can you stop being so defensive towards me? I mean no harm to you.”
Clara looked up at him, taking a step back.
“I can’t do that.”
“Tell me why you transferred to this college? I thought I made it clear that we would be strangers from now on. Then why?”.
“Why did you go against our agreement and come to this college?”.
“What is your motive behind it?”.
Ralph’s gaze dropped, as he looked into the distance.
“I didn’t ask you about your college when we went on the blind date.”
“It was pure coincidence that I transferred to this college, and you are studying here.”
“That’s a lie!” Clara retorted back. “You took a liking to me, that’s why you stalked me and found out I go to this college and started teaching here as a professor also.”
Ralph sighs, placing his hands in his pockets.
“I was supposed to transfer here one week ago.”
“Certainly I didn’t meet you one week ago?” he asked, turning to Clara.
Clara averted her gaze from him. “That’s….”.
“We only met two days ago. I hope you haven’t forgotten.”
She gazed back at him. “Yeah, I remember it clearly!”.
“Then, is it just a coincidence?” she asked with a doubtful face.
He nodded staring back at her.
A few minutes of silence passed between the two of them.
“Um…well….” Clara tried to speak up, but the words weren’t forming in her mouth.
“He did say that he’s a teacher. But, I didn’t think he’d be teaching in my college.”
“Why did he have to….”.
When her eyes met him she adverted her gaze out of embarrassment.
“I know you were thinking I came to this college because of you, but believe me.” He observed her face.
“I was also as surprised as you when I saw you in my class.”
She went silent suddenly, raising her eyes as her throat went dry.
“Well….I….”.
He glanced sideways, “I didn’t think I’d end up sleeping with my student.”
“This is quite an unexpected ending to our blind date.”
Clara’s cheeks became a bit red when she recalled the night they had spent together.
“I…I…I’m sorry for doubting you,” she stuttered, keeping her eyes lowered.
“I thought you did this on purpose.”
He looked in her direction, giving a blank gaze.
“No, it’s alright.”
“You’d doubt me if we met up like this.”
“But, just like the way you thought I came here because of you, I could also think that you had been studying here and knew I would join this college and still slept with me.” His tone became harsh.
“How could I believe you had no intention behind it?”.
Her eyes widened in surprise as she looked at him all puzzled.
“I…I had no…idea….”.
“Exactly,” his gaze narrowed on her.
“I didn’t make any statements at first hand just like you accused me of stalking you.”
She started feeling guilty, clenching her palms tightly.
“Before blaming someone, you should know about the situation beforehand.”
“As a teacher, I can advise you that.”
She kept her head lowered. “I’m sorry for blaming you. Forgive me.” She apologized with a bow.
He heaved a sigh, giving a light smile.
“Well….as long as you understand your mistake, that’s all that matters.”
“I had also thought that you came on the date while knowing about me and everything.”
“Forgive me.”
Clara raised her head, looking at him all puzzled.
“Are we even now?”.
He nodded. “At least for now.”
“Still, I can’t believe.”
“You are a student in my class.” He remarks, his eyes watching her with quite an interest.
Clara felt her heart skip a beat noticing how passionately he looked at her.
“Well…um….we can continue to be teacher and student from now onwards without letting anyone know about what happened between us!”.
“Is that alright with you?” she inquired, looking into his face.
He seemed to be quite calm about the situation.
“Well….”.
“I knew you would say that.”
“No need to worry, as long as you don’t want me to approach you in college, I have no intention of doing it.”
“We can continue to be teacher and student.”
“How does that sound?” he held out his hand towards her direction.
Clara glanced at him and shook his hand with a nervous laugh.
“I have no problem with it either. Thanks for being so understanding.”
“Nice to meet you once again, Clara Miles.” He added with a smile.
He looked so handsome that she forgot what he was saying in the first place.
He became puzzled. “Clara?”.
“Are you listening?” his voice drew into her attention.
She snapped back to reality right away.
“Uh…Um…nice to meet you too.” She replied with flustered cheeks.
“Hope to get along.”
He nodded, pulling away his hand.
“Well then, I’m leaving for my next class. See you later,” he said turning away.
Clara nods with a smile. “Bye.”
After he left, she heaved a sigh.
“Thank god he’s a good person. He decided to keep what happened between us a secret like I wanted to.”
On her way to class, she bumped into someone.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized looking up to see Adrian standing.
Seeing him her face goes pale.
“You?”.
Adrian has a cute face with black hair parted at the sides with grey eyes. He’s one of the most popular guys on campus. His dad is one of the board members of their college. With wealth, power, and looks he has everything.
Clara and Adrian had been dating since their high school days.
But, recently they broke up.
“Clara,” Adrain called, glancing at her.
“Addy!” a voice called behind him, running to his side.
It was the girl whom he cheated on with.
She tugged at his arm, and when she saw Clara, her face was also a bit pale.
Clara’s eyes narrowed at the girl.
“Sabrina, good to see you two together.” She comments with a forced laugh.
Adrian frowned. “Are you mocking us or something?”.
“Just because she’s better than you?”.
“She’s prettier than you?”.
Clara clenched her fists.
“Yeah, I know she’s prettier than me.” She said while trying to keep her composure.
“I know her since kindergarten after all.” Her voice was shaking.
Sabrina glared at Clara, hugging Adrian in front of her.
“Yeah, I know you better than anyone.” She said in a mocking tone.
“ A sore loser as they say.”
Clara lost her composure the next second.
“You were no match for Addy in the first place.” She mocked her.
“Just because you tried to force your feelings on him you could stay with him for years.”
“Your game is over now.”
“How does it feel to lose?”.
Clara glanced at Adrian who stood next to her. It made her blood boil even more.
He was also smirking at her.
By then, a small crowd had gathered around them making Clara feel even more intimidated than ever.
“Look, she can’t even speak. She must feel pathetic that you aren’t dating her any longer,” Sabrina comments, bursting out in laughter.
"As she should," Adrian replied with a smile.
"True!" Sabrina and Adrian both started laughing at Clara.
Clara looked up and was about to speak up but then someone called behind her.
"Clara!".
She turned around to see Ruth coming from afar. She struggled to pass through the crowd that had surrounded them. But, still managed to reach up to Clara's side.
She grabbed her by the arm, panting hard.
"What are you doing here?" she asked Ruth.
"That's what I'm supposed to ask of you. What are you doing here? And why's there a crowd out of nowhere?".
"Did something happen?".
"The clown had also arrived to save the day," Adrian asserts in a mocking tone.
Ruth glanced at him and then stared at Sabrina.
"You two? No wonder you decided to gang up on Clara seeing her alone."
Ruth turned to Clara. "Let's go. We have no business with them."
"But, Ruth-".
"Let her stay. We aren't done yet," Sabrina replied giving a smile.
"Right, Addy?".
Adrian nods. "Yeah."
“What’s all the fuss going on in here?” a voice called behind them.
Clara and Ruth looked to see Ralph approaching them from afar.
Clara’s eyes widened in surprise.
He walked over to their side, and Sabrina and Adrian both seemed to be a bit startled to see him there as well.
“Teacher….” Clara murmured underneath her voice.
He glanced at Adrian. “What’s the problem in here? May I know?”.
“I saw you two arguing with Clara Miles, is anything the matter?”.
“You can tell me about it if you want to.”
Adrian snorted at Ralph. “It’s none of your business teacher.”
Ralph smiled. “Yes, it is my business as your teacher.”
“Now, go on, tell me what’s troubling you,” he said crossing his arms.
“Why are you arguing with Clara?”.
“Has she done anything to you?”.
Sabrina interrupted between them. “Teacher, nothing is going on in here. We were just discussing our next class.”
“Right, Addy?”.
Adrian fumed. “I don’t have anything to explain to him.”
“Let’s go.” He took her by the hand, dragging her away.
“I didn’t give you permission to leave yet,” Ralph comments drawing their attention.
“Should you leave like that?”.
Adrian stopped in his tracks and gave a glare at Ralph.
“You should stay within your boundaries, professor.” He remarks. “If you act too cocky you might have to transfer again.”
Ruth stepped forward, “Teacher, they were bullying Clara in front of the crowd!”.
“They aren’t good people.”
Ralph turned to her with great attention. “Is that so?”.
He glanced at Clara. “Is this true, Clara?”.
“If that’s the case you should raise a concern about it to the principal.”
Clara watched him with eyes full of admiration.
“I’ll come with you of course to complain. You don’t need to worry.”
Adrian turned around to face him letting go of Sabrina.
“What are you going to complain about anyway?” he retorted.
Ralph gave a stern look at him. “About your rude speech and behavior towards your class teacher.”
“And also threatening me of transferring to another college.”
“Everyone has heard it, right?” he looked at the crowd of students that had gathered there.
Adrian clenched his fists. “I can act whatever the way I want with anyone. What do you care about it, huh?” he yelled.
“This is just your first day. Enjoy it better before meddling with me.”
“It’s for your best.”
“Teacher, we are sorry about his behavior.” Sabrina apologized. “Please don’t mind his words.”
“Adrian, come!”. She tried to drag him away.
“You don’t understand Sabrina, he’s trying to “.
“Yes, I get what he’s trying. Just come with me!”.
They both fled from the spot before Ralph got to say something else.
The crowd soon disappeared leaving Ralph, Ruth, and Clara on their own.
