Eye Contact

It was soft and delicate. Its fur color was grey too. I caressed it behind the ear, and it leaned its head, closing its eyes. I felt something weird when I made contact with it, but it was not bad at all. Then, suddenly, its eyes opened, and it stepped back. Its eyes full of an emotion I could not recognize. Before I could realize what was going on, it began to run. It ran away. "No!" I shouted. "Please come back," I begged. My eyes snapped open; I was in my room. It was just another dream. The same dream I've had for months since I saw it. Since I saw that wolf. It was big, almost the size of a horse, and the way it stared at me. There was something behind those eyes. As if it meant something else. The worst part of all was that it wasn't just a dream. It had happened, and I could still remember the events of that day perfectly. A few months ago, I went for a walk and got myself into the woods and there I saw it. I was afraid at first but then the fear went away replaced by curiosity and amusement. That was the first and last time I saw that wolf. After that, I would come back every day but eventually, I gave up. Assuming I would never see the wolf again. I looked at the clock and noticed it was almost 6 am. The idea of going back to sleep crossed my mind but I remembered today was my first day as a senior. It kind of excited me that it was my last year. So I laid in bed, staring blankly at the roof of my bedroom, allowing my thoughts to drift back to the mysterious wolf and when it was around 7 am, I got up and got ready for my first day back to school, then picking up my backpack, I went to the kitchen. "Good morning, sweetheart," mom said whilst walking towards me and kissing my cheek. "Morning, mom." "You woke up early today, I haven't even made breakfast yet," she opened the fridge. "It's okay," I took a sip from her coffee. "I'm not really hungry." "At least, have some cereal," She said, and I nodded to please her. Once I was done with breakfast, mom drove me to school. We said our goodbyes and I walked into the school. Nothing had changed; I saw some old classmates that said hi and waved at me. There were some new faces, probably freshmen. A redheaded girl was running towards me with a huge smile on her face. She threw her arms around me, hugging me tightly. "I missed you so much, mushroom," she said and released me from our hug. "I missed you too, Lennox," I smiled widely. "How was summer camp?" "It was horrendous. Not even a hot guy," she whined, pulling my arm so we would go to our lockers. "Well, that's pretty much what happens when you go to a summer camp for girls." She rolled her eyes. "I still had a little hope, okay?" she mumbled. "Anyways, how was your summer? Anything interesting?" The first thing that came to my mind was the wolf. What would she think? Would she believe me? "Nope," I lied. "Don't worry. Maybe this will be your year," she winked at me. "Sure. I have to go now. See you at lunch?" "Of course," she stuck her tongue out. My first period was math. Great, I had to start my first day with one of the things I hated the most. The classroom was almost full, except for a few seats. I took one next to the window, so whenever I got bored– which was most likely to happen in this class– I could look outside, it was certainly much better. Mrs. Richardson walked into the classroom and two boys entered beside her. One of them caught my attention. He was tall, and in really good shape. His black hair was sort of messy but stylish and then his eyes... They sent shivers right through my spine. An overwhelming feeling surrounded me. I felt like my heart was going to leave my chest because of how fast it was beating. His eyes were too bright, unnatural, resembling silver. His face was emotionless while his hands were inside the pockets of his black jeans which matched the white plain t-shirt and black hoodie that covered his torso. When I stopped checking him out, I looked at him in the eyes. He was staring at me. My face got really red. "Good morning," Mrs. Richardson spoke. "Welcome back," she gave us a twisted smile. "Today we've got two new students: Dylan Mender," she rested her hand on his shoulder. "And Aiden Harks," this one was about the same height as Dylan, but Aiden had dark blue eyes and brown hair. Both guys looked like male models. They were incredibly attractive and good-looking. "Take a seat, boys," Mrs. Richardson told them. Aiden took a seat in the back whilst Dylan went in my direction and sat on a chair behind me. I tried to hide how nervous I was feeling. Math class passed by incredibly slow. "Well, I'll see you guys tomorrow," Mrs. Richardson dismissed us. I stood up and grabbed my backpack, this time I couldn't help myself and glanced at Dylan. He was standing while putting some books in his backpack. Oh God, his jaw. It must have been chiseled by Michelangelo himself. Dylan took his hoodie off, revealing his biceps. Oh, Lord. He turned his face to look at me and I looked away quickly as I felt my face getting red once again. I walked out of the classroom as fast as I could, heading to my next class. Minute after minute, I counted them waiting for the bell to ring so I could go have lunch, not because I was hungry but because I would hopefully see Dylan at the cafeteria. And thankfully, it happened that way. A few tables away from where I was sitting with Lennox, Dylan was having lunch with Aiden. I stared at him whilst he took a bite from his apple; he was staring back at me, shamelessly. Something told me he was doing it on purpose. How could he turn a simple thing like eating an apple into such an act of pure seductiveness? "What's going on between you and the new guy?" Lennox said making me break eye contact with Dylan. "Nothing," I looked down at my tray. "Yeah right. You are technically drooling over him, to say the least," she teased. "No, I'm not," I glared at her and bit my cupcake. "Do you like him?" Her question caught me off guard and I had to breathe deeply to stop myself from choking. "I barely know his name," I said too loud and looked around awkwardly, checking if anyone had heard me, but my classmates were too busy on their own conversations, fortunately. "So?" she gave me a who cares? King of look. "I like Zac Efron and I haven’t even seen the man face to face," she sighed dramatically. "God! I'd marry that guy." I laughed at her. "It's not the same." "Okay, but you didn't answer," she looked at me expectantly. "Can we just drop it?" She didn't say anything, which meant a no. "I don't know, he's strikingly good-looking but I'm not sure." "You should talk to him." "Yeah right. I should also jump off a bridge, right?" I said with a lot of sarcasm. "Bree! Come on." "Don't you see? He's so out of my league," I looked at him, but he was tapping something on his phone. "Oh, no. Don't give me that s**t. You're better than that." A little bit of pity crossed her brown eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a mischievous one. "I have a plan." She stood up. "Lennox, whatever you are going to do," I grabbed her hand and shoot her a warning look, "Don't do it." "Have a little faith in me," she winked an eye at me before stepping on a chair and then standing on the table. "Everybody!" she shouted. "I need you all to draw your attention towards me for a minute," she pushed her long red hair to the back of her shoulder. "To welcome all the new students and to celebrate our back to school, I want to invite you all to a party, tonight at my house." She smiled confidently and everyone shouted cheerfully. Lennox was well-known at school for throwing amazing parties, so I guessed everyone would go. "A party? That's your plan?" I frowned in confusion. "That was part one, silly," she punched me in the arm. "What is part two?" "That's a secret," she giggled, and I rolled my eyes. "He's looking right straight at you," She had her face turned towards him and I threw her a piece of my cupcake. "Why did you do that for?" She was looking at me now and ate the piece of cupcake that fell on her chest. "Can't you be any more obvious?" "What? Are you the only one allowed to look at him shamelessly?" She laughed. "What do you think he's thinking whilst looking at you?" She wiggled her eyebrows. "Maybe he's thinking of the things he would do to you if you were alone." I looked over at Dylan and I could swear I saw a smirk on his face. Before I could say anything back to Lennox, the bell rang. She stood up, grabbed me by the wrist, and dragged me behind her, running to the lockers. "Now," she said. "It's time for part two," she was looking at something behind me, I turned around and saw nothing but a bunch of students walking to their classrooms, but after a few minutes, Dylan and Aiden came into view, walking down the hall. When they were about to pass by in front of us, Lennox practically jumped in front of them. "Hi guys," she smiled widely. "Hi," Aiden said. "Did you hear my announcement at the cafeteria?" "How could we not?" Dylan said with a note of sarcasm that made me chuckled. He eyed me briefly and a little smile crept onto his face. "I just wanted to know if you guys were coming." "Absolutely," Aiden replied. "That's great," she gave them a broad smile. "Oh, God," she palmed her face. "How rude am I? I haven't introduced myself. I'm Lennox Chavelier and this–" she walked towards me and pulled me by the arm, trying to make me walk over to where they were standing, I refused at first but then gave in. "This is my best friend Aubree Dillard," she introduced me. "Nice meeting you," Aiden said politely. "It's a pleasure," Dylan said keeping his eyes on me. "I– I have to go," I held his gaze even though my knees were trembling. "I'll see you later." Since I said that looking at Dylan, it might have looked like I was just talking to him. "See you," I turned to face Aiden and Lennox, giving them a soft smile. I walked away, heading to my next class. As silly as I felt, I tripped over my own feet but soon enough regained balance before going through another embarrassment.
