When the shock goes away, Alexander realizes where he is and the fact that everyone is looking at him. If my wolf screamed mate, his probably did it too. I can't believe it. It's like a dream come true. When we were little we always joked about being mates and somehow I was always afraid that in case we weren't I wouldn't even like my mate because he wouldn't be him.
I want to say something but I don't get the chance. Alexander's eyes go black in rage as he looks at Loky. He is standing next to his mother who is scolding him for playing with the dirt, as she says out loud looking at me with disgust. I am hurt. How can a woman say that in this kind of situation? But I am definitely not as hurt as Loky when Alexander's fist hits his face. The punch is so powerful that I can actually hear the bones crack as Loky flies hitting a tree.
The Alpha is fast enough to put himself between his son and Alexander, but not strong enough to stop my very furious mate to push him aside and continue to kick Loky in the stomach, throwing him in the air like a football. Some members of the pack start growling and try to stop Alexander.
Seven of them working together finally distract him enough to drag Loky behind a tree.
"Alpha Alexander I understand that you..." Alpha tries to say, but Alexander already shifted his attention to me. He takes off his jacket and throws it at me.
"Cover yourself."
Instead of the protective, sweet tone of a mate, his words seem full of venom. I am taken back a bit. I know it's been years and I certainly look horrible right now, but...
"Alexander, I..."I try to say, but I am interrupted as well.
"You will address me as Alpha Alexander, traitor!" And saying that he raises his hand to hit me. I close my eyes, but the slap dosen't come. I open my eyes and look at Alexander. He is staring at his clenched fist with confusion and anger. He dosen't hit me, but the gesture itself, the fact that he considered it, hurts me so much that I can't hold my tears any longer. Mates are supposed to love and protect each other. And my mate is not a stranger, it's Alexander. So why...? And traitor? What? Because of Loky? But that wasn't my fault!
For a second, as he sees me cry, his eyes soften. He turns away.
"Alpha Leon, traitors or not, they are the royal family, and you were asked if you saw them. What is the meaning of this?" He asks.
Traitors? My parents too? Why are we traitors?
"Alpha Alexander, please come inside so I can explain this."
"Explain now!" His tone didn't leave room for argument.
"As you know, after they gave the sacred crown to rogues and sold their own friends to save themselves, they came here, looking for shelter. I reported that to the other Alpha's." Lies the Alpha.
"And told us they got away."
"What betray? He lies, we didn't...!" I scream, but Alexander throws me a threatening look and takes a step closer. I close my eyes in fear but the pain doesn't come. I am scared of my own mate... I am scared of Alexander!
"He is our mate, he won't hurt us." I hear my wolf saying and wagging her tail.
"He almost did a moment ago." I answer back and she gets quiet.
"Keep your mouth shut, traitor!" Alexander says and I hear Carolina giggling with satisfaction.
"As I was saying, the king helped me in the past and I wanted to return the kindness and I took them in my pack. A small mistake that came from a way too merciful heart. I think that can be forgiven." Continues Alpha.
"Do you know what the council decided?" Asks Alexander.
"No, I am not a member of the council." Answers the Alpha, grinding his teeth.
"The council of Alphas that formed after the war with rogues sentenced the family to death and I was the one who insisted on that punishment. They failed us all and they haven't paid for that. Do you realize that you are their accomplice?"
Alexander's words feel like a hit in my stomach and my head suddenly starts spinning. We did what? Paid for what? Alexander insisted...?
"I didn't...I..." Starts Alpha, but fear stops him from saying more. No fear, terror, as he realized that his wish to play with his royal toys can bring an end to him and to his pack.
"Alpha Alexander, please have mercy." Begs Luna Anna on her knees, throwing herself between Alexander and her mate.
Alexander is silent for a moment as he looks at me with his eyes shadowed by both anger and fear.
"I will not say a word to the council. Yet..." Starts Alexander.
"Thank you..."Luna says.
"But..." Alexander interrupts her. "She is coming with me."
He points out in my direction and I hold my breath, taking a step back. My fear seems to hurt him, or so I feel because his face is cold as ice.
"I don't think that's a good..." Alpha tries to plead, but Alexander is already next to me lifting me up like a child.
"I didn't ask what you think." Is the only answer Alpha gets as we walk toward the pack's house.
"At least I can take her to pack her bags, Alpha. We are friends." interferes, Carolina, throwing herself in front of Alexander. She clings to his arm, but he shakes her off. I don't even know what she has in mind, but I can't help but shiver in fear.
"Who are you?" Alexander asks.
"Carolina, Beta's daughter... We danced."
"And why is a weak pack's Beta's daughter standing in front of me?" His question is followed by a terrified Carolina with tears in her eyes stepping out of the way.
"My parents..." Is all I get to say with a shaky voice. I have no idea what is happening, but I won't let my parents here with those monsters. Alexander looks me in my eyes and seems to soften up a bit. He tightens his hold, almost like a reassuring hug.
"Alpha Leon. I will come back soon after the former king and queen. They will face their sentence. Until then, they are in your care. I expect to find them well."
Face their sentence? My parents? I feel so dizzy that I am about to throw out.
"Yes, Alpha Alexander." Is the last thing I hear before Alexander throws me in his car and orders the driver to drive away.
I wish I knew what is coming next...
