"They do cocaine and s**t at these parties, Gigi," he told me.
"Okay, so I'll avoid everyone who gives me suspicious white powder," I replied. "Why are you here then?"
"I'm looking for someone," he said. "Where's Shirley ?"
I blinked. "Why are you looking for Shirley ?"
"You said you came here with her," he pointed out.
I shrugged. "I don't know. I'll see you later." Before he could protest or say anything else, hurried down the stairs to find Lucas. The living room was crowded and loud, but it was better once I made it to the kitchen, which had far less people.
"Hey," Lucas greeted, pushing up from his casual stance of leaning against the counter.
I shook my head as I leaned down to grab a bottle from the cooler beside him. "I need a drink."
He watched as I wiped the condensation from the bottle and popped the top open, then settled against the counter beside him, leaning against my hip so I could see him. His eyes weren't judging, just quietly assessing. "Are you okay?" he asked, moving his arm so that part of it was on the counter beside me and his hand rested on my back.
The action made me feel slightly better, reminded me that Shirley's words weren't true even though I had known that already.
"I'm fine." I took a long gulp, wincing slightly at the taste that I still hadn't quite gotten used to, much less like. "Shirley is just pissing me off."
Lucas raised an eyebrow, silently inviting me to continue if I wanted to. That's what I liked about being with him. I could be myself, without worrying about him judging me, since he never pressured me to do anything I didn't want to.
"I told her about us." I took another, smaller sip then stole a quick glance at him. He'd never pressured me in terms of our relationship either. He'd told me it was my decision if I wanted to tell people, or keep us a secret because of slight age difference.
He had warned me that people might not approve, though. Since I was a 'good girl', according to him, and while he hadn't said that he was bad, he had something along the lines about how he definitely wasn't the town's goldem boy- who just so happened to be Fede, Shirley's boyfriend.
His lips twitched into a slight smirk when I told him her accusation about him just wanting me for s*x, but other than that Lucas expression remained pretty steady as I recounted my argument with Shirley. He was quiet for a moment, though his thumb moved in light, soothing circles on my back. "What are you going to do?"
I shrugged, leaning my head against his shoulder. "See if she brings it up and wait for her to apologize. Or we'll probably just pretend it never happened."
His free hand cupped my chin, tilting my head up so I was looking him in the eye. "You shouldn't let her say things like that and walk all over you," he said.
"She's my best friend, Lucas ," I told him.
"What if she doesn't apologize?" he asked.
I sighed. "Then I'll forgive her eventually and we'll act like nothing happened. What else am I supposed to do? Get revenge?"
He shook his head. "Not revenge. Just make sure she can't say something like that to you again."
I should've known it was a bad idea from there. But I was so, so pissed off at Shirley for her high-handedness when her relationship with Fede was pretty s**t. And that, along with the alcohol clouding my judgement made me lean forward to ask Lucas to continue.

It took a while to find Shirley
After doing a loop of the basement and living room and coming up with no sign of her, I stopped to ask a couple mutual friends if they'd seen her.
"Last I saw she was heading upstairs," one of them said.
I thanked them, then turned to look at Lucas once we were past them. Upstairs was bedrooms. As far as I knew, Fede wasn't here, I think Shirley had said he had some sort of family thing. So was Shirley upstairs with someone else? Would Lucas and I even need to go through with our plan?
Still, it would probably be better if I found her.
I didn't really want to apologize to Shirley for the fight that hadn't really been my fault, but Lucas had said that would be better for the plan. I still wasn't a hundred percent sure on the details of what the plan actually entailed, but since I'd had three shots and wasn't exactly in the right mind set for devious plans, I left the scheming to Lucas.
I started trying doors upstairs. A couple rooms were empty, and a couple were occupied by events that I really hadn't wanted to see.
The last door I tried was locked. I knocked, pressing my ear to the door. I didn't hear any movement inside, no banging or moans. "Shirley ?" I yelled, though I wasn't sure if she would be able to hear me over the chatter and music.
Maybe this was just like the master bedroom or some other room that was off limits and Shirley was not up here.
I gave Lucas, who was leaning against the wall beside the door, a helpless shrug. Just as I turned to walk away, I heard the door open and felt myself being pulled inside. Then the door shut and the lock clicked into place before I could grab him to bring him inside with me.
I turned to Shirley hopefully -or whoever had pulled me inside the room- about to ask her, or them, why she/they were in such a hurry. I froze at the sight of her face.
It was Shirley
And she looked like a mess. Oh my dear goodness , I wondered what had happened.
