I rubbed my other had over them, then glanced back at the girl. "Who are you?"
She hesitated, then opened her mouth. "I'm-"
"Candy," Lucas said from behind me. I'd been too focused on the girl to see or hear him approach. I resisted the urge to scrunch up my face at her name. It sounded like the name of a stripper, though I knew it was probably just some nickname for Candice or something.
"Lukass," she choked out, sounding ten times more calm, but a hundred times more nervous.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, his tone frustratingly neutral, giving nothing away. Who was this girl? And what did she mean to him? I glanced up at him, but his eyes were focused on her -Candy- and his stare was just as blank and cold as his tone.
"I-I was just leaving," she said. She backed away, then turned so quickly I was surprised she didn't lose her balance in the five-inch heels she was wearing and all but ran away. Lucas watched until she disappeared around the corner, his expression still chillingly blank.
"Who was that?" I asked.
He glanced at me and grimaced, finally showing a hint of what he was feeling. "An old friend."
I raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Friends with benefits," he admitted.
I opened and closed my mouth several times, unsure of what to say. Obviously I knew that just because Lucas had been my first didn't mean that I had been his. I hadn't expected to run into any of his past flings, though. "She doesn't seem like your type," I finally managed to chose up.
He gave me an amused look, his tone lightening. "Not everyone I know is a good girl like you, Luce."
Right. Lucas did sort of have a reputation. Not like a drug dealing bad boy or anything, but he wasn't exactly the town's golden boy, or even really someone you would want to bring home to introduce to your parents and grandparents who faithfully attended church every Sunday. My parents didn't, but yeah it still hadn't really gone well with them.
"Still, she seemed kinda crazy," I said.
Lucas stared in the direction she had walked away. "She used to be different," he replied cryptically.
I gulped. Did He still have feelings for her? Me and that girl were light years apart. She looked like a mess now, but behind the poorly maintained hair and bloodshot eyes, there was a sort of fierce beauty. And she had probably been great in bed if they had been friends with benefits.
"What did she say to you?" Lucas asked, fully turning towards me now.
I shrugged. "Just said I should stay away from you.. That you were a monster."
He seemed surprisingly undisturbed or hurt by the information. Instead there was a calculating expression on his face, like this was some test or experiment that had given unpredicted, but not unpleasant results.
I wasn't sure what that meant. "Luke?"
He glanced at me and the cold look melted away. "It ended badly," was all he said. Then he took the arm she had grabbed tightly and examined the marks she left before brushing over them with gentle fingers. "I'm sorry she hurt you. I'll take care of it and make sure she doesn't again."
"Do you still feel anything for her?" I couldn't help but ask. The questions escaped before I could stop it, even though I wasn't entirely sure I wanted to know the answer. "Did you love her?"
He shook his head. "Believe me when I say I don't feel anything for anyone but you."
I didn't get affectionate words like that from Lucas very often, he wasn't that type, so hearing them made me forget about everything else. I gave him a wide smile and leaned up to pull him into a kiss.
And that was the mistake I had made over and over.
Believing Lucas when everyone and everything else told me not to.
How was Reil so involved with Lucas ? First at the apartment, and then again at the mall, after her... Transformation. Did Lucas mean what he had said? About them being ex-friends with benefits? That didn't quite make sense though. Unless he had been cheating on me with her the whole way through.
I went through a couple other articles, but I couldn't find much on Reil. There was probably a bunch of more information that was hidden from the public. I had to figure out how she was connected to Lucas
She had been flirty and infatuated with him the first time I met her, but at the mall she had been scared of him.
...Sort of like I was now.
But there was no way I could find out any information that wasn't released to the public. I didn't have those connections. I drummed my nails against the edge of my laptop.
"Stop that, it's annoying," Christian said.
I stopped and turned to look at him. I didn't have those connections... But he did. Did I really want to ask Christian Harvey for help though? Which one's more important, your pride, or figuring out was going on with Lucas? I sighed. "I need a favor."
He glanced at me from the corner of his eye. "Using me already?"
I gritted my teeth. "Please."
"What is it?"
"You know people who can run background checks right?" I asked, even though I knew he probably did. And if he didn't, then he definitely had to know people who knew people who could. Any private detective could, and while I wouldn't be able to afford one, he, or his family, probably had several at his/their disposal.
"Yeah..." he trailed off, giving me a curious look.
"Can you run a background check on someone for me?"
He raised an eyebrow.
"Please," I said. "It's important."
"Fine," he agreed. "Who?"
I thought about it for a while, did I really want to do this? Was I prepared for whatever was coming my way because there was no turning back
