CHAPTER 8 – The shock that shook my world Cherry’s POV It was Tuesday evening. I started to pack my bags. One and half weeks had passed since my surgery and I was feeling better now. After a while, the tingling aches disappeared. I pulled up my t-shirt to see the stitches scar. The side of the left breast was cut and opened for the heart transplant. I carefully touch the stitches scar and kept my palm on the beating heart. It gently thumped in Evie’s body. It made me miss my body as Cherry Wayne. The words of the Mafia Clerk started to echo in my mind. My sixth sense insisted that he knew something about my heart transplant which he didn’t want to share with anyone. Never mind, Clerk, I will find out. A devilish smirk appeared on my face at this thought. I pulled the t-shirt back down and continued packing. I opened the closet to find that Evie had nothing special nor did she have any fashion sense. Even though Mrs. Clerk asked me to do some online shopping, I hesitated for two reasons. I didn’t want to spend a penny of their black money and I didn’t like to do much shopping anyway. I did shop for my siblings and my parents, but I rarely did shopping for myself. So, I decided to go ahead with what I had in front of me. I picked out black and dark-blue leather jackets along with denim jackets. Then I opened the t-shirt compartment and pulled them out. Finally, I took out a few pairs of jeans and some boots. Not a single skirt or a dress was there. If I was not mistaken the only dress she ever wore in her life was her school uniform. With a sigh, I threw all the clothes on the bed and started to fold them carefully. When I was folding my clothes, my mom used to help me all the time. She gave me hundreds of instructions and safety tips to stay alive during operations. She packed food for me in separate containers and then in zip lock bags to prevent them from leaking and destroying my clothes. I miss you, Mom. I want to come home again. I want to hug you all and fight with my siblings. My soul started to weep and howl inside. My heart shattered into pieces and a lump started to form in my throat. I bit my lip to stop my sobs from escaping my mouth. But, soon tears started to flow down from my eyes to my cheeks. Then suddenly, I was surprised by Mrs. Clerk’s voice and I quickly wiped away my tears. “Evie, where are lost? I was talking to you and you looked like you were in a different world.” Mrs. Clerk pulled out a chair and sat in front of the bed. She took my hand into her palms and gently squeezed it. “Evie, I see a vast difference in your behavior after the surgery. Baby, you can talk to me about anything. Please don’t hold and hide anything from me. You know how much we love you,” she pleaded, maintaining an emphatic smile on her face. Silence started to rule between us in the room. I squeezed my fingertips and bit my lip nervously. I wanted to scream out and declare that I was not Evie. If I revealed to her that I was someone else, she wouldn’t believe me at first. But if I proved it to her, she would live like a living corpse for her entire life like my own mother was after my death. Knowing that your child was no more in this world was the biggest bitter truth for parents. I had seen in many murders and deaths how parents especially mothers cry hugging their children. Their world was their children; they were everything to them. If I looked at the case from Mr. Clerk’s point of view, he did what every father would do in such a situation. Evie was their only child, he also explained how hard it was for them to conceive Evie. However, the only loophole in the story was that he lied to me. He was acting like he didn’t know where he got the heart. My police instincts insisted that he knew everything about it but he didn’t want me to deal with them—my family. “Mom, all that has happened to me is a big thing to get used to. I am alive because someone donated their child’s heart to me. I want to thank that family and I want to reward them. I know Dad gave them a fair amount, but the support they have given us is immeasurable, Mom!” I justified my actions and behavior at the dining table the previous day. Mrs. Clerk sighed and then looked at me with a gloomy smile. “Evie, I have seen you argue with your Dad before. But it has never gone this far. This time he is really upset about this. I hope these physiotherapy sessions and training period will help you change and we can see our Evie back,” she explained. “Let’s see, Mom,” I said, standing up from the bed to fold my clothes. She was looking at the way I folding my clothes carefully which was odd. “Why? Am I doing something wrong?” I asked, stretching my arms out. “You never fold your clothes and even if you do fold them, I have to fold the clothes again, because the way you fold them is so messy. But today you are doing it so calmly and neatly. Plus, you are using your right hand more.” She looked at me with curiosity, her face painted with a questioning look. Now what, Cherry? What did she mean by I am using my right hand more? I am right-handed. F**k! That means Evie is left-handed! What should I do? What should I do? “Umm…. Y…you have noticed so many things, Mom. I think it’s because of the heart. It stimulated my left brain to work on my right hand more I guess,” I mumbled but somehow managed to create a lie. I hated lying. Especially as a cop, we took an oath that we would never lie to anyone, but now my whole life was a lie. Without saying anything, Mrs. Clerk gave me an empty look which worried me. “Come on, Mom, now help me fold them.” I circled my arms around her neck and she wrapped her arms around my waist, hugging me tightly. She helped me to fold my clothes neatly and placed them into the luggage bag. After that, she went out and came back inside with another bag. “What is it?” I asked, my eyebrows narrowing. “Your favorite foods are in here, sweetheart. You can enjoy them for three weeks. I don’t want you to miss home without your favorite food.” She passed me the bag and I packed it together with my clothes. “What’s in here?” I inquired, curious to figure out more about Evie. “Don’t you know what your own favorite food is? Do I need to remind you of that too?” she said, her forehead scrunching up in confusion. “Hee…No no. I just wanted to confirm.” It was yet another lie created by Cherry Wayne. “Evie, how is your wrist now?” Mrs. Clerk started to check my wound gently. “It’s all right now, Mom. The cut is getting better. The stitches have almost vanished and it’s no longer hurting,” I replied. “Evie, be careful, sweetheart. I know that you are arrogant like your dad, but you have to be careful at least for a few months. We almost lost you. We don’t want to lose you again and experience the hell we suffered just a few days ago.” She hugged me tightly. Her hug was heartfelt and I started to feel her motherly warmth. I will understand how hard motherhood is when I become a mother one day. “Don’t worry, Mom, I won’t do such a thing again. I did it to save Ana, otherwise, they would have r***d us!” I justified my actions. “Now, let me check your bags to see if you have packed all the necessary things you would need.” Mrs. Clerk started to peep into my bag, her eyes scanning the contents. “Okay, it seems like everything is here. Your t-shirts, jackets, jeans, boots, and undergarments. Hurm…. but something is missing.” She started lightly drumming on her forehead with her fingertips. “What is it? I packed everything, Mom,” I assured her. “No, you didn’t,” she replied and walked over to the closet before opening a drawer. It was a secret drawer that I hadn’t noticed before. Mrs. Clerk pulled out a few light green colored sanitary napkin packets. “How can a girl forget this? How did you forget your monthly menstrual cycle, Evie?” she admonished seriously. I had totally forgotten about it with all the confusion of my new life. I was revealed to a whole lot of new things by Clerks and was curious about my death. “Why worry? That’s why I have you.” I pointed at her with a silly smile. She shook her head with a sigh. “Oh, I didn’t get a chance to ask Dad what time we are leaving.” I suddenly remembered that I hadn’t talked to Mr. Clerk much after the heated conversation between us at the dining table. I personally didn’t like to meet him, but I had to deal with him. At least until I headed to the academy and dug out the truth about my death, including the transplant of my heart into Evie’s body. According to my memory, I had never signed anything about donating my organs after my death. Did my parents willingly give my heart to this poor girl? “Evie, I think you should go and meet Dad. He was really upset about your words, Evie. He knows that you have a feisty character, but you shouldn’t speak to your dad like that, Evie,” Mrs. Clerk advised. She was truly a good and crystal clear character. Maybe she knew about Mr. Clerk’s business or maybe she didn’t, but either way, I was sure that she doesn’t involve herself in them. Her hands were not covered with blood. “I will go and see him, Mom. Can you come with me?” I asked cunningly since I didn’t know where his office was. I need a map to understand this mansion! “I will drop you at his office, but I am not going to come in between your dad and daughter conversation.” She smiled at me kindly and I nodded. She started to walk in front of me and I followed her unquestioningly. Mr. Clerk’s office was located on the first floor of the mansion. When we reached the door, the guards stopped us, and at the same time, I heard Mr. Clerk yelling inside his office. “Let us in,” Mrs. Clerk instructed the guard. “I am sorry, Ma’am. Sir has instructed us not to let anyone in until his guest leaves,” one of the guards said. He was dressed in a black suit and wore black sunglasses. “I am his wife and this is his daughter. How dare you stop us?” she exclaimed, raising her voice to the guard. He immediately looked down with guilt. “I am sorry, Ma’am. I am just doing what Sir ordered me to do. He said….” The guard paused and scratched the back of his neck nervously. “He said what?” Mrs. Clerk demanded. “He instructed us not to let even his wife or daughter come in,” the guard replied, lowering his voice. Mr. Clerk’s voice raised from time to time, but it was not clear what he was so angry about and why he was yelling furiously. It sounded like he was infuriated by the person who was inside the room. My cop senses started to trigger curiosity within me to know what was happening inside. What’s worse was that I couldn’t hear anything the other party was saying. Perhaps he was dumbfounded and muted by Mr. Clerk’s anger. “Evie, shall we come back later? Looks like your dad is busy and it’s not a good time to talk to him. He is fuming with rage. Come, let’s go,” Mrs. Clerk suggested after a loud sigh. However, I wanted to know what was happening inside. The curiosity of the cop’s mind started to activate in my brain. I didn’t want to leave, but rather stay right there. Part of me assumed that one of his businesses probably suffered a terrible loss and that was why he was roaring like that. “Mom, you go. I’ll stay here. Who knows, Dad may be busy for the entire day and I won’t get an opportunity to talk to him. So if I stay here, I can go in as soon as the person inside leaves,” I said convincingly. Mrs. Clerk started to contemplate my idea but eventually, she nodded. “Hmmm… okay. But, promise me that you won’t argue with your dad and that you will apologize for your behavior at the dining table,” she advised. “I will, Mom.” She patted my cheeks gently and walked away. Standing outside his door, I could hear a heated conversation going on inside, but it wasn’t clear. Curious, I walked over to a nearby balcony and leaned over the handrail. Fortunately, this part of the mansion was facing the front gate and the parking lot of guests’ vehicles. As expected, there was only one vehicle parked there. I saw a black Audi car parked in the lot. It was a brand new one, which meant that it was some rich businessman inside who came to meet him. Guards were roaming everywhere around the mansion lawn all the time. Returning back inside, I waited outside his door for nearly half an hour. Seems like this is not going to be over soon. I better go and come back later. I sighed and turned around to head back to my bedroom. As I was walking, suddenly, his office room door opened. Hiding in the corridor, I peeped out carefully to see who was inside. Unfortunately, all I could see was the man’s back that was facing me. But, I could see that he was a tall, well-built man, dressed sharply in a full suit. I could see Mr. Clerk’s face and he was furious. He was about to say something to that man and had already begun pointing his index finger at him, but then, he noticed me from above the shoulder of that man. “Evie, what are you doing here, sweetheart?” he asked, his fuming eyes turning soft. “Hey, Dad. I….” I started but before I could complete my sentence, the unidentified man turned to look at me. My eyes went wide and my jaw dropped in shock as soon as his face was revealed to me. It was as if the ground under my feet crumbled and my knees went weak. My breath hitched and I couldn’t exhale. My heart stopped and the entire world around me froze. My throat went dry and my lips started to tremble. It was John Parker! The third-in-command of our Hawk team six!
