Chapter 1: Arlen's POV
“Let’s go, Leen; mom is waiting at home,” my younger brother Seth said.
He is the jokester, the one who tries to keep my spirits up, but I’m tired of it; I want to find my mate, like my four older siblings have. I’m almost 27; I should have found him or her by now.
I would prefer him, but if it’s her, I won’t care; I only want my mate.
“What’s the point?” I grunted as I kicked a rock. “All I’m going to do is stay in my room.”
“Don’t be like that!” Seth pushed me playfully. “We can do something with our siblings!”
“Who?” I asked because the oldest, Killian, was the only one who remained in the pack. The rest found their mates and had to leave.
“Well… you still have three unmated of us left,” he said, trying to lift my mood.
“I know,” I let out a breath and looked at the sky. “I just don’t understand what is taking so long.”
“Mom believes you will find your mate soon,” he replied.
I looked at him with a blank face. Mom has been saying that for years, and so far, not mate.
“What does ‘soon’ even mean by now? It has been years,” I huffed and sat on the ground again.
My brother, Killian decided it would be fun to send the rest of us on missions to have something to do around the house, I think he wants to stay all alone with his mate since his kids a little bit older no.
It was the first time the four of us were at home in weeks, which is why Seth is so persistent.
“Sis, I wish I could tell you when you will meet your mate, but… trust Mom, okay?” He gave me an apologetic look.
I trusted Mom, but… it has been too long.
“Hey, don’t lose Hope; the only one who knew who his mate was from the start was Killian,” Keila, my wolf, reminded me.
It was not fair. Killian knew who his mate was since he was a toddler.
“It would have been nice to have the same luck,” I huffed, thinking it would have been better to be mated to a member of the pack.
“I think we will be mated to someone powerful, won’t you like that?” Keila asked, but I didn’t have an answer for her.
I didn’t care if my mate was strong and powerful. He could be an omega or a human, and I would still love him. However, if I look at all my siblings' mates, they all have something in common.
They are all crazy strong.
We are tribrids, the first of our kind for years. A werewolf, a Lycan, and a witch. Unkillable, or so we thought; and feared. Until the Dragon King appeared. He was supposed to be extinct, but apparently, the bastard just moved to another realm and then tried to kill my family years ago.
I hate him.
“So… what do you say?” Seth pulled me from my thoughts. Insisting once again that I come home with him.
“Fine,” I grunted as I stood up and cleaned my pants. “One night, I will spend one night at home and then go for a run.”
“At least I convinced you of one night!” Seth joked and pulled his arm over me.
I’m not the tallest, but I’m not as short as Mom. I’m 5'3 ", which is a little bit below average, but the problem is that my brothers are huge.
All of them are over 6.5 feet tall, which is unfair. I wish I were taller. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t put them in their place if I need to.
We are all great fighters. Some are better with magic, and others are better in physical matches, but we are all hard to kill and have received the best training.
“Let’s go,” I said and followed Seth into the house.
As we reached it, I looked one more time to the sky, the moon looked beautiful tonight.
Please, Selene, help me out. I want to find my mate.
I pleaded and finally got inside.
——————————————————
I loved the wind against my fur; it made me feel alive like I could do anything I wanted. Keila is a beautiful white and grey wolf. I inherited the shiny fur from my mom, mixed with my dad’s black one.
My wolf is unique, she loves to run around the pack and dodge as much obstacles as we can.
This helps me keep my mind off things.
The trees blurred past us as we darted through the dense forest, the scent of pine and earth filling my senses. Keila was swift, her paws barely making a sound against the ground. She loved the freedom and the wildness of these runs, and I couldn’t blame her. Out here, away from the pack, away from the expectations, I could almost forget how incomplete I felt. Almost.
"Faster, Leen!" Keila urged, her excitement bleeding into my thoughts. "Let’s see how far we can push ourselves tonight."
I leaned into her energy, letting her take full control. My surroundings became a blur of dark greens and browns, the forest alive with nocturnal sounds. Keila’s joy was contagious, and for a moment, I felt a flicker of peace.
But it didn’t last.
“Arlen, please come to the house. I need to talk to you,” Mom said, closing the link.
What the…
“Am I in trouble?” I asked because I was not used to Mom being so cold.
Mom didn’t answer, so all I could do was sigh and return to her house. I then turned into my human form and walked to Killian’s office. Although she never specified where she would be, thanks to my senses, I was able to find her.
I opened the office door and noticed that my mom, dad, Killian and his mate, Jennifer, were all there, and the look on their faces instantly made me very on high alert.
“Did something happen? Why do you all look like somebody died?” I asked as a way to lighten the mood, but it didn’t work.
“It seems it is something serious.”
“Ya think?” I rolled my eyes at my wolf for stating the obvious.
“Please grab a seat, Leen,” Killian said with a soft but authoritative voice.
Ever since he became Alpha, he has become more and more like Dad.
“Okay?” I said and sat as my brother had requested. I didn’t like the look everyone had; as I said before, they were acting as if someone had died.
“Leen, this is a request I must make to you, but I want you to know that the last choice is yours,” I am not liking where this is going, “I’m not forcing you to do anything.”
Yep, definitely not liking where this is going.
“Spill it out, you know I hate small talk,” I said, which earned me a blank stare from Killian.
“He should know patience is not our virtue,” Keila snickered.
“He does; he is trying to soften a blow,” I replied because I knew my brothers pretty well.
“The Dragon King has asked for your hand in marriage as a part of a peace agreement,” there it is, he ripped the band-aid off.
“Focus!”
“Sorry.”
I started laughing nervously. Killian must be kidding, right?
“Arlen,” now it was mom. “I’m sorry about this situation we are putting you in, baby, but… we need an answer.”
An answer? This marriage meant I could no longer find my fated mate. I would never experience the same love I have seen my siblings and parents experience. Who is this guy to begin with?
I hate the Dragon King, and now I have to marry his son?
“Leen, if you don’t want to, I can’t tell them we are not accepting their terms,” Mom said, trying to calm me down, but I knew better.
“They will ask for Anika if I don’t accept this deal, and if I’m not wrong, Moonflower is very dangerous. We can at least make sure this enemy doesn’t try to kill us.” I accepted my fate. I may want to find my mate, but… if we were meant to be, I would have found him already.
The only thing that didn’t sit right with me was the fact that Mom fervently believed I would find my mate.
“Sometimes I make mistakes, sweetie,” right, she can read minds.
“I know, Mom, but it doesn’t matter anymore,” I squeaked my shoulders. “Tell the Dragon King I accept the deal.”
—————————————————————
“Shouldn’t they be here already?” Jennifer asked in a whisper.
“Time works differently at that real, too,” my brother replied.
“Still, they should honor their own agreement,” Jennifer was not happy; she made it clear that she preferred going to war than letting me go.
Fortunately, it wasn’t her choice. It was mine, and I was not ready to risk the lives of all my family members.
“Jen, I know you are not happy, but Leen agrees to this deal, and—“
“Yeah, because she had a gun pointed at her head,” she replied, making my brother sigh.
Jennifer always kept my brother on his toes, which was fun to watch because my mother had not been any better to Dad.
“Jen, please. They might arrive at any moment, and I don’t want them to hear your snarky comment.”
“They wouldn’t hear any if they had gotten here on time.”
Yep, she was not letting this go.
“Precisely, werewolf Queen, we are late,” I jumped at the sudden intrusion of a voice I had never heard before.
It belonged to an old man with orange eyes; he had a long silver beard from his age and dark skin that contrasted with his eyes.
I thought dragons didn’t age, but it seems I was wrong.
He wore a dark red robe embroidered with gold patterns that shimmered in the light. He looked like a counselor.
Behind him stood two figures. One was another older man, though not as ancient, with dark horns curling from his forehead, his sharp silver eyes scanning the room. But it was the third figure that stole my breath.
He was tall—much taller than even Killian—his long black hair flowing past his shoulders. His golden eyes locked onto mine, sending an unfamiliar shiver through my body.
“Forgive our delay. We had a few matters to attend to at our realm,” the older man apologized, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the man who had taken my breath away.
Are all dragons this handsome? Is my ‘husband’ like this?
